@@allisterfiend_2112 I figured that was the case. Remember the tall posters? I had allister on the back of the door of my bedroom. He was a combination of each band member as I'm sure you know. I've seen so many reactors have that surprise recognition that the musician they thought originated a song didn't, especially people who've grown up on hiphop and who don't fully realize the implications of rap/hiphop being made up of "samples," bits of other people's songs cobbled together to be rapped over, and sometimes the bits taken are the best-known parts of a song, the chorus or the main riff. People who haven't heard the originals before, no matter how popular the originals once were, just have no idea.

A hugely successful 1977 song and Billy Joel's true breakout hit (as his 1973 masterful, minor hit "Piano Man" had faded from memory by then). This won Grammy awards for "Record of the Year" (the recording) and "Song of the Year" (the songwriting).

Fun fact about this song: Billy was thinking of doing it as a hard rock number, and his producer said, "No, you need to do it as a bossa nova". They argued for a bit but Billy eventually caved. And the rest is history, it hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Doubt very much a hard rock version would have done the same. For your next Billy Joel, try "The River of Dreams", a gospel-inspired number with an infectious groove. Hard not to dance.

Billy Joel is another iconic, American songwriter. He’s up there with the best of them anywhere. He was one of the very first artists Russia allowed to play there in the spirit of openness which was a new policy to the outside in the late 80’s. 87 to be exact, I believe. They had never allowed an American “Rock” band to play there before. He had fans in their government I’m sure. Anyway, it’s an excellent documentary/performance film of this special set of concerts. It’s called, BILLY JOEL: A Matter of Trust - the Bridge to Russia. I highly recommend it because of the excellent performance and the total uniqueness of this even happening. Just a few years prior, this would never, ever have been a possibly in anyone’s mind, much less the Russians! So, it’s a groundbreaking musical ambassadorship. Billy handles it like the Boss he is. It’s a great watch and listen. Trust me on this, it’s fantastic! That’s the great thing about music, it crosses borders easily. That’s why the Russians were afraid of this, they knew they wouldn’t be able to stop the power of this type of music. The people would be that much less easier to control. Isn’t that wild? Oh No! No American Rock! The people will go nuts on us! And they knew it. How cool is that?

I built the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano Billy Joel used in this song..... My Mother Dorothy Jean Tandle…“Dotty” worked at RIC in early 1964. She did the work on the Beatles guitars. Ten years later…..In the 1974, I worked for “Fender Musical Instruments” in Fullerton California. I made two Fender Rhodes Electric Pianos for John Lennon/Apple Studios. The one used on “Walls and Bridges” “Well if they’re gonna send one, send two cause I’d like one as well” John Lennon ordering a Fender Rhodes Electric Piano at the Apple studios. (Elton John recorded “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” with the same piano) My mother and myself are the only mother/son that both built an instrument for John Lennon. My mother made guitars for many famous Rockers, including the red guitar that was smashed by Peter Townsend of the WHO and is in the Rock HOF. Chris Squire, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney (left-handed 1964 4001S FG Rickenbacker bass) , John Entwistle, George Harrison’s 12 String. Roger McGuinn 12 string and many others. I have built pianos for “You name it” just about everyone IE: “Pink Floyd” on “Dark Side Of The Moon” It is our little contribution to Classic Rock. I’m very proud of that fact.

He wrote those words straight from his heart that's why they are felt so deeply. I love it when you feel the same things as me when I hear you speaking about one of my favourite songs and possibly my favourite billy joel song. The sax solo is to die for. It seems that every note the sax plays is just perfect and harmonizes perfectly with the words and then this free flow jazzy runs so effortless. What a master on that instrument and how deeply he feels that song. In ranking the best sax solo in pop and rock music I think that would be number one. Another favourite billy joel song of mine that I love so much maybe even better than that one maybe my favourite billy joel song is: all about soul. Again the simplicity of the words and he sings that so passionately. It's impossible for me not to feel his soul. He gives his all his very best in that song. He's such a great soul singer. I love watching your reaction videos. To me you're one the most sympathetic youtubers. I love how you are as inspired by great music as me and that you love music deeply as me.

Billy did not chart in the Top 40 here in the UK until 1977 with this song and even then it only reached #19, with Piano Man only reaching #136 here in 1973. Barry White had had several hits here in the UK between 1973 and 1977, including a #1 and so he had a higher profile here than Billy and released his cover of Just the Way You Are the year after and it reached #12. Other than a couple of minor hits from The Stranger album in 1977 and My Life in 1978, Billy's profile here in the UK did not really pick up until the 1980s, which might explain why Harri knew the Barry White version of Just the Way You Are rather than the original.

Sweet combination of Latin feel, and jazz. I really like the cool, unique melody line of his song Uptown Girl, and The Longest Time, done acapella.

The Melbourne concert was my wife’s favourite of all time so we were so lucky when we planned a trip to the UK that he was playing a once off concert (2019). He ended this song with “and then we got divorced”
