I have inattentive type ADHD and have been a binge eater since early childhood. I suspected in recent years that it was the drive for dopamine. It never felt as simple as “just” emotional eating.

Such a complex area and we still don’t fully understand all the functions of dopamine yet. I wish we could get to the point where we actually scan people’s brains so they can see what’s actually going on, rather than diagnosing on a cluster of symptoms

I was diagnosed with both ADHD and Binge eating, I find myself late at night hyper focused on food and start obsessing over what I should eat. Then I get to the point were I feel so guilty about the food I want and make myself think I eat it. And I noticed when it comes to dieting and or meal planning becomes to much for me, and it all goes down hill and I find I eat way more when I focus on eating healthy

Weight watchers just got me hungry as well in the old days. I am more likely to go from not being able to fall asleep to standing in the kitchen. Even if its healthyish food, its quite late and likely boredom eating, I guess.

Thank you so much for exploring the possible link between ADHD and binge eating. We might finally find ways of managing this aspect of our behavior instead of diet culture saying, “You just don’t have will power.” I’ve been telling myself lately, “You’re stimming” and this awareness helps me take 10 minutes to breathe and be still (sometimes I listen to guided meditation, I color in my journal) and that has helped so much! I haven’t binged in over a week. ❤

I was diagnosed with ADHD (and autism spectrum disorder) last year at the age of 36 (I'm female) as a child I wasn't interested in food at all and only ate very small portions. As a result I was underweight during my childhood and teenage years. I only started to binge food when I moved to my own apartment at 22 years old. I quikly started to gain weight and was overweight for many years. Only after I was put on ADHD medication during january this year, my binge eating completely disappeared. I also used to have problem with alcohol (like I bought it several times a month and drank in large quantities alone in my apartment) but I haven't had the need to buy any ever since I started to use concerta. For me, the ADHD medication stopped my binge eating and alcohol @bus€. I say "for me" because sadly ADHD medication doesn't do that to everyone using it. I think one of the reasons why I started to binge food when I moved to my first own apartment was because I come from a big family (six of us and our parents. No, we are not part of some religious group, my parents just wanted a big family) and my ADHD brain simply was bored to live alone and as a response started to fixate on food. I'm glad people seem to talk more about the relation between ADHD and binge eating. (Sorry for any possible spelling errors, english isn't my mother language)

I'm late diagnosed ADHD and I suspect BED but I don't quite fit the criteria. I just recently tried Contrave to help, and the quiet I felt from by brain was so strange. It felt like going from a loud room with hundreds of people to just silence. I was finally able to notice and honour when I was hungry, and when I was full, but I had no idea prior to this just how out of touch with those signals I was. I'm not able to continue with the medication unfortunately, which is what led me to your video. I found this extremely helpful, so thank-you for making it!

I know its an old post but are you still having results with Contrave? I am taking Wellbutrin and Naltrexone but it worked the first 4 months and since then it works like 30%, i can see the difference when I stopp it altogether, obsessing about food is back and the food noise.

The fact that those with ADHD. swing between hyper focusing and almost hyper vigilant shows that the underpinning architecture is there. The problem seems to be with wilfully using the different parts of the attention system. Hyperfocus utilizes the orienting part of the system whilst the alerting system results in a broader monitoring of everything in the environment. Amishi Jha (neuroscientist and attention researcher) is a great resource . Personally I overcame decades of binge eating when I learned how to strengthen and wilfully direct these sub systems through mindfulness.

I've always been very conscious of my body composition but have only been able to maintain good eating habits and healthy weight when I've been in hyperfocus. The rest of the time I'm embarrassed about what I binge on. Just about to start stimulant medication and hoping to see a different in my dietary choices.

I never feel full/satisfied - even when I eat to the point that I'm overfull and getting reflux (unless I'm anxious or so interested in something other than food that I'm excited to get back to that once I've had enough).

I deal with boredom by planning creative things that so want to do later that day and imagine those things which raises my dopamine levels. I’ve known that eating often isn’t beneficial because it raises your insulin levels which can cause insulin resistance. Fir me, planning to eat 3 times per day healthy and complete meals has helped me.

I dont know any of my times tables. I think I have ADHD and dyscalculia at least. I have meltdowns that arnt always predictable. I'm trying to learn to predict them better. I have tics too which can be caused by ADHD. I am in the UK on a waiting list that will take years. Sigh.

I think the video was good. In my experience, diagnosed at 65, binge eating is pretty well entrenched as a life coping mechanism. So, doing much better with a regular eating schedule but I can't have treats in the house, and I am just ok with that for now. I am not as hungry or as frantic if I have a good selection of food around. But for anyone starting out, I wouldn't recommend having your favorite binge food around-- that's too hard at the outset. I also find I am making my meals taste way better and that is relieving some of the anxiety as well.

Qlso healthy snacks alternative doesn't help because nuts and stuff, then i eat handfull of raisins and nuts which is really abusive to the guts at that point. Or quinoa, then i eat a pot that is supposed to be for 3 people. Can't stop till it's finished. I am helpless.

May I ask what differentiated between a “binge” amount of food and eating at not great times like 1 am when not working 2-3 shift) or reasons (boredom, sadness?) but the amount of food perhaps isn’t harmful in itself. Is it the feeling of compulsion or obsessing on food while doing other things what makes it different?

Point of information that might be handy. There is some evidence that treatment of ADHD symptoms over the long term can lead to remission. If a child with ADHD is put on medication, over the long term, there have been permanent changes observed in brain function such that a diagnosis of ADHD may no longer fit.

You can speak to your GP. Some people seek medical help because there is medication (which a Dr has to prescribe) and this helps some people. Some people just like knowing whether they fit the criteria and then they go away and educate themselves about ways of managing it. You can get private assessments. I don’t know the best place to sign post you for this so you my want to join some online ADHD support groups and ask around

I got a referral for psychiatrist from GP. A psychiatrist is more familiar with adhd and prescribing instead of a GP. Good luck. It took me almost 4 years to get adhd help, again, due to a prior alcohol problem, regardless of my 2006 adhd diagnosis. I had to be re- evaluated again, and am combined type. I struggle with BED, and had anorexia & bulimia issues as a teen.
