ADHD is currently understood to be a disorder of inattention, impulsivity, and usually hyperactivity that arises in childhood or early adolescence and is highly persistent over time in most cases. However, since the first medical papers have been published on ADHD starting in 1798, emotion has always been included in the conceptualization of the disorder up through the 1970s. But beginning with DSM-II and progressing to the present, emotional dysregulation has been excluded from the clinical conceptualization of the disorder and the diagnostic criteria and relegated to an associated problem or the result of comorbid disorders. This presentation reviews the evidence from the history, neuropsychology, neuroanatomy, and observational research that shows that emotional impulsiveness and deficient emotional self-regulation are an integral part of ADHD. Returning emotion to its rightful place as a core feature of the disorder also serves to better explain the development of comorbid disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder, and well as various life course impairments. Dr. Barkley will discuss how to determine which aspects of emotional adjustment problems in ADHD cases are the result of the disorder and which are likely to be the consequence of comorbidity. He will also address the implications of including emotion in ADHD for their management.
In Part 1, I discuss the nature of emotion, why we can expect it to be dysregulated in ADHD, and list the evidence I will review in Parts 2 and 3 for including emotion back into ADHD.

Every few months when I‘m feeling down I go to KZfaq to binge watch your lectures while doing housework. I just need the knowledge refreshed every now and again and it motivates me to make better accommodations for my ADHD. This time around I am pleasantly surprised by this entire new KZfaq channel full of easily accessible lectures. Thank you so much!

This describes me so well. I have issues to regain my negative emotion once it flares up. My prescription absolutely helps but I need to remind myself that this is my brain and not the actual appropriate response.

There is so little research on this specific topic on which to create a video commentary. I wish we new more but at least scientists are waking up to the role that hormones may be having on ADHD symptoms in women.
