Can you relate? - lesson 49
ADHD Life Lessons I Wish someone told me after getting diagnosed, number 49 of 50.
If you have ADHD your days are often driven by a chronic fear of forgetting. You gotta remember to text back your friend, get that project handed in on time or go grocery shopping and so every 20 minutes or so these automatic reminders jolt through your body making you incredibly stressed out and eventually burned out because you can no longer live in the moment.
This is when I had to learn about the secret power behind trust and relaxation. I learned that over the years, we ADHDers often lose trust in ourselves because of past mistakes but that this actually makes things worse, because, it turns out that thoughts come through better when we’re relaxed and so it’s incredibly important to count on yourself. Yes, putting external reminders in place, but then trusting them which has been a game changer for me because I can now enjoy life by living in the present, all the while producing better quality work because to-dos feel less daunting.
Lesson 49: Relax To Remember
Disclaimer: All my content is based on my own experience and/or research/observations from licensed professionals. Just because you do these things, doesn’t necessarily mean you have ADHD. ADHD behaviours are not exclusive to ADHD. If you think you might have it, please look to get officially diagnosed by a professional.

Post it notes all over my house. Someone once said "our brain is for having thoughts, not storing them." And that changed my life

It’s also okay to forget things and people shouldn’t judge forgetfullness as a lack of involvement, empathy or sympathy. And for those who do judge, aren’t capable of remaining a true friendship with a neurodivergent.

This is incredibly true,. I got my diagnosis about 2 months ago at this point. My medication hasn't changed at all. Just knowing what I'm dealing with and having some tools from therapy has helped me trust myself more. The diagnosis itself lifted this weight off me. I thought I was broken in some fundamental, undefined way. Now that I know what it is, I've found that I can relax and be present in the moment. That's made me less forgetful, less anxious. I still struggle, but not nearly as much as I did before when I was firing into the dark.

I just forget things anyway 😅 I set 30 alarms and I'm always like "Five more minutes I have no motivation right now". I always get judged by my relatives for it and it's horrible. I wish people would understand better

I think the big difference is that someone in a place of security has the luxury of relaxing. Most ADHD and especially AuDHD folks tend to live paycheck to paycheck in endless debt because we didn't start adulthood with the tools to cope with how our brains work.

I've made habits one of my biggest priorities to help with my ADHD...and even then I dont trust myself. It actually feels like I have to learn to trust an entirely different person in order to be able to relax about even the smallest things. So when I actually find something that I thought I lost in the place I had taught myself to put it, it actually feels like someone else did it instead of me.

This is SO HORRIBLY TRUE! I was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury induced ADHD. So I don't have any of the coping mechanisms of a person that always had it and had time to build coping mechanisms.

Finding you has been a revelation for me. Everything you say describes my relentless life challenges with pinpoint accuracy and specific, spooky details. I'm crying (again) and it feels so good to release some of the mentally draining energy that accumulates when one goes undiagnosed.. Why has no mental health or medical professional I've paid good money to over the last 46 years ever considered exploring an ADHD diagnosis for me?

I love love love your channel hon. Thank you so much for helping those of us who have ADHD and also those who don’t have it so that they can try to understand us and what we go through. ❤PS you’re so adorable and cute. I love the way you shoot your videos. PSS …… I use the Calendar on my phone. I put everything in it, or I will forget and I write notes and then scratch off what I get done and it makes me feel such a sense of accomplishment or I put it in notes on my phone. I use both strategies without them……I’m done because I also have a brain injury.

Keep a small pocket notebook and a pen with you at all times and jot down ideas so that they're out of your head and recorded. You can also use your phone and the dictation feature to make a list in your phone. The purpose of the list isn't specifically to look at it later and work on the things you thought of. It's to empty your mind of things that are occurring to you, that you can't work on now, so you can focus on what you're working on now.

Because those of us who live like this with ADHD never seem to be able to fully relax. I wonder if that’s why I feel like I’m always in fight or flight amongst other things that may have made me feel this way I’m sure.
