ADhD is basically textbook manifestation of “visual learner”. i need to see everything to know it exists/needs to be done. If it isn’t ‘in the way’, i can pretend it doesn’t even need to be done. kinda like my taxes :)

What a great way to showcase the complexity, nuance, and internal strategizing we experience just to get basic life handled. For nonADHDers out there, know this video is 100% accurate.

I'm so glad! I’m also thinking of how to incorporate this *purposefully* into my own organization. So far I’m thinking clear bins, and a designated “to do” shelf? So there’s also a built in limit, too. But I’m not sure that will actually work longer than a couple of weeks! Anyway, if you think of anything, please let me know!!

@perezbrenna_ Great video! I've never thought of my piles as "to do lists" but that totally makes sense! Have you ever seen Cass' Clutterbug videos? She has ADHD as well, and is an organizational expert (ironic, eh?🤣) who came up with 4 types of organizing styles, each named after a bug. The "Butterfly" and "Bee" styles are very visual and need those visual reminders to stay organized. If you look those up, it may help give you some great ideas while still having it look pretty and organized. You're on the right track with clear bins! The difference between the two visual bugs is that Butterflies are "macro" organizers, and Bees are "micro" organizers. Example: a Butterfly would throw all their receipts for the year into one bin and if they needed to find something, they would know approximately where it would be because the most recent receipts would be towards the top. A Bee might put them all in one bin, but the bin would have dividers for the months, or perhaps categories like, car, insurance, medical, large purchases, etc. Butterflies need for things to be VERY easy to put away. Bees prioritize finding things quickly. Anyone can be a different bug for different areas that need organizing as well. For example, someone might be a Butterfly organizing their paperwork, but a Bee with their make-up collection... or even go so far as being a Cricket with their spices in the kitchen. Crickets and Ladybugs are "out of sight" organizers, and don't like visual clutter, Crickets being micro, and Ladybugs being macro. Normally most people are either visual or out of sight organizers, but it's _possible_ to cross over in some areas. Hope this helps! I'm subscribing right now! You are my people! 😂

So relatable! Visual “to-do” lists have the best chance of getting done. So are the gazzillion of opened tabs to read later, to buy later, to research later etc.. if you close them, those things are wiped from the memory. Thank you for sharing 🌸🌸🌸

This is exactly me and I don’t like it lol. But instead of keeping stuff out because then that makes cleaning and tidying a bigger job, I have lots of containers of various sizes to keep projects or “to do later” things. They’re all different styles and colours so I don’t forget what’s in which jar / box / tub. However my laundry, jewellery and most recent craft project or purchase constantly clogs up my chest of drawers top “desk”. It all stays perfectly tidy and neat for 3-4 days max before the mess begins again.

The algorithm has blessed me today. I have a "out-the-door pile" where my bag, laptop, lunch bag etc. sits on the couch. If I have extra things that I need to bring with me to work I set it on top of the pile. I needed to bring headphones with me the other day and set it on the pile - the headphones feel off the pile and I forgot the headphones that day. 🙃 The to-do list piles really are so important to me. Thank you for helping me add meaning to them haha.

The problem comes in when you have so many more "to-dos" than you have "to-dones" that they all become one incomprehensible blob with a thousand overlapping voices shouting about what needs to get done.... 😣 Yeah, I'm in that stage. (Making some small progress lately but it's been hard going.)

Props for having a folding to-do list. I just have bags of clean clothes, but most of my clothes are black. So, while I actually do have different bags for different things... to some extent, it still takes a long time to find anything. I reeally gotta put these clothes away, but I have so many higher priority things to do first, like uhhh making a place to actually put them... Maybe it wouldn't take too long to better sort the bags at least. 😅

It's kinda funny that it's just so normal to me that piles of things are just another form of to-do lists. XD But personally, I don't think I could live by "out of sight, out of mind", because unfortunately, a lot of things that are _in_ sight are _also_ out of mind. :/ And I know if I depend too much on having things in sight, those piles will start to mix and result in confusion. So I do a combination of the "piles" thing and digital lists. I'm still trying to figure things out. 😅

This is how I organise my life, my studio, workshop, coffee table (office) I have a storage unit, its hard to get to all the stuff stacked in crates. It freaks me out when I go there. All this stuff, forgotten. Difficult to get to, lots of it part of ongoing projects. Keep up the physical pile to do lists, it works well if you actually follow the system. Well, it does for me.

I found it helpful to buy LOTS of clear plastic bins in various sizes, which I load up with materials sorted (and labeled) by project. It's neat and space efficient but allows me to store away longer term plans while still holding faith that I will eventually redeem all the planning and purchasing I did to get through the prerequisite mental labor. It was a real breakthrough for me when I extended beyond the baseline organizational strategy of grouping tools and materials by profession/hobby. The latter started getting sketchy as individual skillsets started requiring subdivision (i.e. electrical work splitting into home electrical, automation/circuitry stuff like Arduino, and industrial stuff like machine maintenance). And it really fell apart when even those subdivisions started each having a baseline toolset but also serving specific plans that kept growing in number and complexity while also _spanning_ tooling/skillsets). It didn't take long to realize that often when I couldn't find a thing, I couldn't confidently guess where I would have put it in the generalized sorting structure, or even what it was called. But I always remember _why_ (for what project) I had it - even if I now wanted some of it for something else. Now, my layered general-to-specific organizational approach is a fairly complete encoding of the conceptual/mental models behind all the ambitions that my personal space contains. But the "list piles" are the last crucial ingredient. Ultimately, there is no substitute for giving the most important/urgent things _intrusive_ presence, once again enlisting my physical space to manage and prioritize what my brain cannot. That's why it has to be messy, and it has to be inconvenient. Out of sight is out of mind. For the ADHD-afflicted, even out of the _way_ is out of mind.

LPT: Use things like Roomba to automate. I used my Roomba 'Scooter' on manual mode for a long time, but now it's on auto mode. Use the app to schedule cleanings (MWF for me), and then use a smart speaker to set up notification routines like this: "Scooter will begin cleaning in 20 minutes. Please pick up any 'Scooter food' and close any doors necessary." I set up other reminder routines like 'get ready to leave for school pickup,' which prompts me to gather my keys, phone, etc, and then another reminder when it's time to actually leave.
