They are great machines and very underrated. Hoot to ride. Plenty of service/ upgrade vids for the RF on this channel if needs be.

I had same tapping on my 96 RF900, my mechanic loosened tensioner then tightened it back down as he said it sometimes needs help moving on to the next tooth. It did fix the problem. He also stated that they're noisier engines due to Suzuki trying to keep prices down used no sound deadener in engine covers like Honda will do to make their engines very quiet.

Thanks for the information I have the exact same sound on my 96 RF900. I've got about 23K miles on it. It still runs very strong I do keep my maintenance up on it. This noise has been driving crazy. Will have it checked out.

No probs bud, happy to help! Before you spend serious money get your alternator checked because those can generate this sort of sound. It's my second RF9 and the previous one used to make similar sound from alternator(noisy bearings) One more advice regarding knocking sound. Some of those liquid cooled GSXR/RF engines generate tapping sound when to much oil was poured in the engine. Drain about 300 ml,wait until engine gets cold then start it up again and carefully listen if it still knocks. Sometimes it gets a lot better when excessive oil gets removed. If it still makes that sound then pour the oil back in cause the problems is somewhere else. Check that first, it costs no money and might solve the issue. Good luck bud Take care

Hi bud, it is a bit puzzling to be honest.What about valves? Do they have the right clearance? Valves that requires maintenance will also give a similar ticking sound. Some people say it's the alternator's bearings but i doubt it cause in your case(and in mine too) the sound was somewhat internal. You suspect crank bearings but they usually knock hard,loud and from the bottom of the engine. For crank bearings it's really more of a banging then ticking. There was a post on RF900 FB forum recently and the guy said it could be wrist pin being lose. The problem is that it could so many things..The only 100% accurate method of finding out would be puling the motor out and taking it to pieces to inspect:( Sadly most of can't do that:( Ride safe bud!

Guys i also have 1994 RF900R arownd 30k miles and you should know that there is a little bit more simple solution to the same problem. The chain tensioner has 2 springs the first one (the longer and softer) is inside it and the second is on the top of the piston, the solution is to open the tap that covers the first spring (DO NOT REMOVE THE TENSIONER FROM THE ENGINE) and just push the piston deeper by hand into the engine until you feel that you are compressing the second spring, but be carefull not to press too hard because it will worn out the plastic "bananas" that lead the chain, than just put back the long one and close the tensioner. Usualy that job must be done by the long spring but after so many miles it gets softer and it can not do it properly any more. If the noise is not gone after the procedure, you either didn't compressed the second spring enought or your tensioner has a broken fixation tooth and needs replacement, and if it wasn't for 1 of those reasons you have to reaplace the timig chain and the other stuff that goes with it (sorry). Worked in my case I hope it works for you too. Sorry for the crappy english I'm from Bulgaria and don't use it very often.

Replace the ting chain they are not overly expensive and they are a critical engine part that if it breaks will destroy the engine. If the springs are no longer pushing hard enough it because that there maximum allowable travel.
@ZeronXL
@ZeronXL 4 жыл бұрын
@@leeengelsman6356 I don't know what's the case on your bike, but on mine there are 4 cm of travel until the end of the tensioner, the springs are weakened because the bike was sitting still for 5 years without even starting the engine, before I got it.

I have an 83 GS1100. 22k now. The guy I bought it from had a receipt from a bike shop that tires, oil change, inspection, etc. was just done. So I put 2k on it and it was time for an oil change. On the test ride I noticed the top end was noisy. So I got home and kicked the side-stand out and got off with it running. TAP TAP TAP!!! It got worse. I jumped back on and leveled it out and it got quieter. I immediately shut it down, checked the oil level. Spot on. Immediately started freaking out thinking something went bad. After a smoke or two I started looking around and what I came up with was the oil itself was causing it. It didn't like modern oil. I don't remember exactly what brand it was and I know it wasn't synthetic. I don't go cheap on my GS. I looked for traditional oil and chose Rotella T4. I immediately changed the oil and it went back to sounding like it should. I have done 4 more oil changes since then and the top end never sounded like that again. When you cut to the video of your RF I had flashbacks of that day. It sounded exactly like yours did.

£450 for valves and new cam chain?! That's amazingly cheap. I remember loving the star ship enterprise looks of the RF900 back then. Great bike for not much cash, if it's not a lemon.

Okay, mines got the same, but not quite as badly. Hmmmm. But why replace the chain...hmm. On other bikes you just change the tensioner and new chains are not supposed to run on old wheels. Often can be done from the outside, even. I need to look into the schematics. Thanks for the video, btw !!!!

Alternator coupling rattles on later RFs before they fail. Valve clearances close up with age, not increase, find another mechanic😊
@Adikxx
@Adikxx 11 ай бұрын
You need to learn a bit more about those bikes.. They had 2 types of alt couplings : early models had solid drive and later ones had bush drive. It's only the bushed drive that used to fail and my bike is an early type with solid drive which is faultless. Alternator and it's drive never rattled in my bike. You have no idea.. Also if valve clearance only closes up with time then why bikes often end up with loose valve clearance? 🤣 Clearance can get either tighter or looser and you have no clue again..
