West Canada Lake Wilderness - Spruce Lake - A day in the life of an Adirondack Lake
The West Canada Lake Wilderness in the Adirondacks is the second largest wilderness area in the park, encompassing 168,920 acres. For this trip I wanted to do something different. What kind of video could I make hiking to one site and spending 24 hours filming a day in the life of an Adirondack lake?
The trail starts off blazed with Yellow disks. Follow this up until you come to a right-turn with a sign pointing to Spruce Lake. Head up the trail until you intersect the Northville/Placid Trail which is blazed with Blue NPT disks. Go right at this intersection and follow the trail all the way to Spruce Lake.

From Speculator, NY head North out of town on Route 30.
Perkins Clearing Tract turn-off: 43°32'3.88"N / 74°23'4.28"W
Once in the Tract, stay on Jessup River Road to the parking area.
Parking Area / Trailhead: 43°31'25.04"N / 74°33'43.91"W
PLEASE READ
Perkins Clearing Tract is an active logging area so you may come across logging trucks, road closures due to logging activities, and your journey to the parking area is approximately 13 miles on a mix of hard-packed dirt and loose gravel. 4WD is highly recommended as is a fair bit of clearance. Also note, if you don't pay attention to the signs there is a good chance you will end up on roads that may get you lost, and in some cases, beyond what your vehicle can handle.
You may also notice that there are permanent camps throughout the area while driving on the road. DO NOT use these camp sites as they are leased properties and considered private. I'd highly recommend you read up on the Perkins Clearing Tract before you head out at www.dec.ny.gov...

Hey all - I just noticed there are two scenes where it seems like the frame rate drops to half of what it should be at. One is the slow-mo shot of the little plants in the water and another is a long-focus to short-focus shot. I've been trying to figure it out for the last hour. My project in Premiere and the final render I used to upload are showing no frame drops like what I saw when I watched it back on here. Everything looks smooth before uploading it. I could adjust those 2 scenes to regular speed and re-upload but I'll just own it and leave it as-is. Call it a learning experience in not leaving the video private for 24 hours so I could see it in action and re-edit if need be.

Thanks for checking the video out. I don't have high hopes for the GPS but we'll see what happens. Hopefully if someone finds it and decides to keep it, it serves them as well as it has me. It has some nice topo maps in it for the Northeast.

Nice videos Joe! I have been researching going into the West Lakes and locate some of French Louie's spots and came upon some of your work. I hiked in the Noah Rondeaus Hermitage this summer and now want to visit Louie. Now you've got me interested in possibly adding Spruce Lake to my route as an alternate. I have zero'd in on Louie's fireplace and a couple of caves to look for on my adventure. Looks like I'm not going to make it for peak leaves but I am definitely going to get back in there. Thanks for your vids! I gotta get better at doing video edits, you did a great job! Jeff

Thank you! You are certainly following in the footsteps of a very prominent man in the Adirondack's history. I've read a bit about him but don't know a whole lot. I'd be very interested to see those sites so when you visit be sure to get some video of it. I was hoping for a trip up to Spruce Lake before the colder weather set in but it's looking more like I won't be able to get there. Have some other stuff I am currently working on that is keeping me from filming my hikes (I'm still out and about but bound by an NDA so can't really film or talk about what I'm doing out there). Nice video Joe. I'm a new subscriber. I intend on hiking the French Louie Loop next Spring/Summer. I also like your Pharaoh Lake content as it's on my radar too. I did the High Falls Loop this past summer and are jonesing for more! I'm located in Bergen Co. NJ and I'm guessing you're not incredibly far away.

Thank you! The road was in pretty decent shape, maybe one or two spots where having the high clearance was a bonus. Overall the entire 13-mile trip from 30 to the trailhead was smooth and enjoyable.

HAHA, I realized I never addressed where the person was. When I arrived at the lean-to he was in the privy and had his dog up there with him. The shots I put in were after he came back down to filter water. He was just passing through.

Caps Outdoors I have been super busy at work, haven’t had a lot of time to get out, but yes, the M50 is awesome ! I’m really enjoying so far. Thanks for asking man ! I’m getting out to the woods on the woodlot with my youngest son this weekend, to hike around and cook up some food at the old camp area I have up there. Hopefully I can get up to the Whites in a few weeks when it cools down a bit to do some backpacking ! Have a great weekend ! Cheers !

Work has been a bit busier with everything going on, I have a lot of my users working remote now and every day seems like a game of musical desks as we try to keep people distanced. That sounds like a great plan to get out this weekend, always nice to get some father/son time in the wilderness. Enjoy it brother! (and I may still try and get up to NH as well at the end of August, I miss the Whites)

Hello, What is the proper etiquette in occupying a lean to if some is there already? Are they required to share or do you move on?

They are not required to share but 9 out of 10 times people are welcoming. It's a little rough if you are out trying to get a few days of solitude but sometimes, as is the case with this video, you meet some very interesting people this way. The guy that stopped there was an NPT thru-hiker and we traded stories well into the night. Was a great evening.

Rules as per NY Adirondacks states: Lean-tos are open to all parties up to capacity. Usually 6-8 persons. There is No claiming. This policy has been in place since conception.

People have definitely gotten canoes out there over the years so it may be possible. Back in 1999 there were 4 tucked away in the woods near the first lean-to. I'm not sure if they wheeled them in or shouldered them in but a couple had pads so I'm assuming they carried at least the two. [edit] I should have added, I'm talking about canoes so a kayak is definitely more doable.
