Thanks for another great video. Why is "lại" at the end of "vặn nhỏ lại"? Doesn't "lại" mean "again" or "back"?
@HowToVietnamese
@HowToVietnamese 2 жыл бұрын
“Lại” has a lot of meanings. In this case, it’s used to imply the direction of motion “turn … down”. In Vietnamese, there are a few of these “coverbs’. The simplest way is to remember them as chunks/phrases

@HowToVietnamese
@HowToVietnamese 2 жыл бұрын
Yep you can also translate like that. I just wanted to give the closest translation. ‘Con gái tóc ngắn’ literally ‘short hair girls’, where ‘tóc ngắn’ acts like an adjective 😊

Is lớn more commonly used than to?
@HowToVietnamese
@HowToVietnamese 3 жыл бұрын
In most cases, you can use them interchangeably as big or large. “To” however also means “loud/aloud”. Meanwhile, “lớn” can also refer to the growth of something or someone.

@@HowToVietnamese in South West we also use lớn with the meaning loud, we never use "to", it sounds like a Northern word, but specifically we use bự to talk about the size of something the differences between many dialects of Vietnamese confuse not just foreigners but native speakers as well 😅😅😅
@HowToVietnamese
@HowToVietnamese 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your inputs! I agree. In Saigon we use all 3 words - to, lớn and bự. I just don’t want to confuse the learners too much. But I will try to update my blog to also include “lớn” and “bự” 😃
