Hi there, “ly” refers to “glasses” (ly cà phê, ly rượu) and is more commonly used in the South. Meanwhile, “tách” refers to “cups” that is meant for hot drinks (tách trà, tách cà phê)

Xin chao em, I heard a saying along the lines of " Your a really nice guy " but expressed as a negative rather than a compliment, do you know it ?

Wait a sec. Doesnt "Anh" refer to a guy who is older. And "chi" referring to woman who is older. And the one addressing that person being "em" because they are younger. Also "minh" is new to me. All the apps I use say "toi" as "I/me."

@HowToVietnamese I feel so embarrassed. I've been using it at my local vietnamese restaurant where workers are younger than me. Em. Thank you for response. All the app I downloaded teach northern accent. No wonder Viet community don't understand. Lol 😅

No worries you’re still learning. I’m sure the restaurant staff still appreciated your effort :) Vietnamese pronouns are a bit complicated as they depend on age and gender. That’s why most books use the default pronoun for all genders “tôi” and for my teaching content I use “mình”. But in real conversation, you should try to use the appropriate pronouns. For instance, if the person is younger than you (like a younger sister), you should call her “em” and address yourself as “anh”. I’d recommend spend some time learning the basic Vietnamese grammar course. sounds confusing! super fascinating and educational though! never thought there could be a language that has this structure! it’s a whole new way of thinking about how i speak every day now! kinda relieved i don’t have to do mental gymnastics to figure out and remember how to address someone 😅 most we have is being polite about assuming wether or not someone uses masculine or feminine pronouns! (although some people here can’t even respect that 😢) i wish more people knew pronouns aren’t just a gender thing. it’s important to treat others with respect! i like that vietnamese language is respectful in this sense, it’s very cool! thank you for making this video

The problem I find with Vietnamese people and culture is they are too polite both individually and culturally as a group of people. Asking a Viet how they are doing in any capacity, casual or serious about their health, jobs, family, etc you'll just get a general reply. The reply is always going to be limited to a positive or a neutral. Every Vietnamese person I know in the US are all very closed. They never respond with a negative reply no matter the situation. It just makes me think they never want to share or show bad times and experiences with American friends and co-workers. Even among themselves, they don't open up and express their true feelings at times with their own families and friends. There is nothing wrong with being private about private matters, but I always feel everything, no matter how small and trivial are even private with Vietnamese people.
