Good video. For others finding this video, first make sure your generator is running at 60hz (if you are in the US) before you adjust the voltage regulator as shown in this video. Either use a "kill-a-watt" meter or a multimeter that can read hz, start the generator and adjust the phillips spring-loaded screw for the governor adjustment to get the hz as close to 60hz as possible. You may find that you need to set the hz to 61-62 range unloaded to get a solid 60hz under load. Once that's set, follow this video to get your voltage dialed in.

many people adding a generator back up to their houses or barns don't consider that if the plug to the generator is 100 to 200ft or more from the house or appliances that you want to run, they could easily loose 5 volts or more depending on size and run of wire. at 120 volts you could easily go down to 115 or less so if some appliances are acting fishy this is probably why. you could even get less then 110V if the run is too long. upping the voltage would definitely help long runs.

My generac Dp3300 puts out very low voltage like it will make the lights very dim, and if I plug a drill in it has barely any power. Any idea what would cause that?

The AVR adjustment info was exactly what I was looking for, assuming mine isn’t potted. I’m running about 135v and 270v with an RMS meter. It drops a couple of volts with a load. When I adjusted the Governor to slow the engine, the HZ dropped too low as the volts went down. It didn’t affect even electronics when I output high volts. BTW, I used two different RMS meters. If my AVR does not have the adjustable potentiometer, would you advise to replace the AVR?

My arv adjust didnt work at all, but i've adjust the speed of the motor waiting for buying the new arv... Its lower the hertz but its worst to got 190 volts...

How about lowering the idle and raising the voltage, would that be okay? Or it will blow your regulator

Hi your videos are great I thought I reach out to you because I know I have a simple problem and maybe you can help me diagnose it with my genrac quietpact 50. I have did a complete service and replaced the carb and springs that connect to the throttle and governor arm. I get power when running maybe about a minute and rare occasion 10-15 mins then it shuts off. I checked the hertz and put it at 60hz. Engine sounds great. However I have noticed at some point I can hear a slight surge for a moment and at that time I can see the hertz go upto 75-90hz then the power shuts off? I measured the voltage to when running at 60 hertz it’s about124-126 when it surges for a second or less it goes up to 160ish. Could this be the excitation breaker causing this problem. During this whole time I never had a large load on the generator just a tv on.

My Generac GP3300 worked great during Hurricane Dorian. But now it’s only putting out 12.5 volts. Does that mean the AVR is bad?

the more voltage it puts out the more power it will provide which means it will get a bit hotter under load

Hi i have an old Dunlite generator with no avr and if i adjust rpm to get 50 hz frequency for Australia it puts out 338 volts with a fan plugged in to flash it. Btw fan spins slowly on house electric but at 338 volt on the generator it wants to fly away lol. Spins too fast . Can you please tell me how to lower voltage to 240 Australia and keep at 50 hz frequency please? Any reply appreciated thanks from Australia! Please get a video camera operator to help you with making videos. I believe you could really shine in your video production on anything you do. This video is very good, but if this a calling, and you want to teach or show KZfaq viewers. A 2nd person operating the video camera with be of great value. Also you show make notes so that you know where you are in your filming. Turn off the camera, when you get lost, and start over again. I believe you watch many KZfaq video and must know, that the ones that have high quality production value, and not a one man show. I'll stop here.
