How to make a #knife #bevelling jig. Quick and simple step by step video for perfect knife bevel. PLEASE FOLLOW ALL TOOL SAFETY ADVICE. THIS IS NOT A TRAINING VIDEO, ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND HAVE GUARDS ON YOUR EQUIPMENT, BE SAFE AND ASK ADVICE IF UNSURE. Thanks for watching.
This channel mainly focuses on Hobby Knife Making and any projects we have around the House and Garden. I don't claim to be a professional Knife Smith and I don't and never have offered knives for sale. The way I do it is not necessarily the right way, It is simply a hobby Incorporating Wood working, Metal working and Leather working, recreating age old working tools as in a recreation of the 1950s British Army issue knife, Hunters Knives, skinning Knives, Fishing / Gutting Knives and Kitchen or Chefs Knives. The power tools and hand tools used in my videos may be used in a way that is not recommended and is in no way a tutorial of how to use tools of any kind, always be safe and wear the necessary safety equipment and use your tools in the way that the manufacturer recommends.

I made one like this and it works awesome I welded some square tubing on each end for handles an a flat piece of steel on the bolt for stability and off I go.

Thanks. Looks like you sanded the threaded end smooth with the angle iron and didn't adjust. Wonder if a piece of aluminum angle stock would work just as well.

With just the one threaded bolt placed in the center, how do you keep the tool from wobbling to and fro?? Think it would be difficult to hold the jig level while pulling across the sanding belt. The more angle, by screwing bolt in further, you wanted would seem to exacerbate the problem. Please explain.
@GAN369
@GAN369 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, set the angle and then tilt the jig and put the weight to the front of the jig flat edge, its impossible for it to wobble as it rests on the long front flat edge providing perfect stability.

First time I've ever seen a linisher used with the back stop in position - didn't look very square though.
@GAN369
@GAN369 7 жыл бұрын
The backstop played no part in the process of flattening the steel, so the angle of it had no bearing on the final result and it wasn't used to create a right angle, it was left on to block the hot steel particles flying off the end of the belt grinder.

because I had a machine shop and precision sheet metal background I could understand what you were doing. I thought a novice would need to hear what was being said. Evidently this was for more experienced people. In that case good job.

So what's the point of inserting the bolt and locking nut if you're just gonna grind the end of the bolt level with the 1" bar stock? How to create the proper angle?
@GAN369
@GAN369 8 жыл бұрын
Adjust the bolt clockwise to raise the jig to your desired angle
@jackrusselcrow
@jackrusselcrow 7 жыл бұрын
i wondered the same thing... i think it may be due to the bolt itself sometimes they are not completely flat at the end so to make sure it is perfectly flat sand it flush with your bit of metal.
@GAN369
@GAN369 7 жыл бұрын
I have not seen a bolt with a perfectly flat end, that's why you grind it flat, you have answered the question. Its much easier to get the desired angle with the bolt being ground flat but to be fair it was probably overkill because you will still get a nice grind without flattening the bolt, its not essential.

For one this is a bevel grinding jig not a sharpener; but more relevant: why are the bevel lines so uneven and wavy? you can clearly see they are uneven at the end of the video.

Sorry mate, it's just that, as I said, I've never seen the back stop used before even after a long career in the jolly old engineering! I have a back stop for my own linisher, but as must be obvious by now, I never use it. Enjoy yourself mate! (from the UK)
