This was incredibly helpful - thank you so much! Our piano tuner had just come and turned our piano (which is admittedly costly), so when I played and found that the damper wasn't working correctly, I was slightly mortified at the thought of having to pay more money for him to come back, just to fix the damper pedal. I did my fair amount of research, but your video was (by far) the most helpful.

It's extremely important to ensure that the dumper pedal's "dead zone" is really just a quarter of inch or so. I made a mistake and adjusted it larger thinking that it will be easier to press this way-the result is that the dampers didn't lift much away from the strings when the pedal is pressed fully which made the sound much less open (and quiter) when playing with the full pedal (no more such a thunderous bass, much less impressive sound overall). Also, good half-pedaling techniques require that the distance is proper.

Thanks for the video, much appreciated. My pedal (on a 132cm upright with full Renner action, which is only 7 months old) was making a clicking noise, which the technician sorted by adjusting as you have in the video. However, since then depressing the sustain pedal causes a metallic sound which appears to be from the springs in many of the damper level notches. The sound is far worse with the lid open. I was told it was because the dampers are now moving too far from the strings. Playing the notes individually without the sustain pedal gives a similar sound on most notes, but obviously is far less noticeable. I have put a block under the sustain pedal to limit movement of the dampers, but surely this should not be necessary. How can the sound be stopped? Thanks.

Thanks for the good video, I think you're right, I suspect probably the treble section damper rod hook must be slightly bent. Since its not really causing any problems I'll leave it alone for now, if I pulled the rod out, and tried to straighten the hook out a little bit, it'd probably be risking breaking off that hook, but looks like from that video would be a simple job to fix since it would already be out of the piano. Looks like most of the work involved is pulling the action out and putting it back in.

I am a beginning piano player (at age 64) and am really enjoying it. I haven't even gotten to pedals yet, but just the other day when I started to play the notes keep going. It is like I am pressing a sustain pedal but i am not. Very hard to practice when the notes keep going. I figure it must be some pedal problem, but not sure why it is doing it. Hi Sam, It’s not quite as easy with grand pedal adjustment. To adjust the damper pedal lift on a grand piano you basically have to adjust all of the damper wires in the damper levers. Which is a much bigger project than just turning a screw on an upright piano.

My pedal squeaks because I found that the trapwork is metal and rubs against the inside of the panel. I just learned how to remove the panel woohoo - but I am wondering if the little rod with the wingnut on it needs to be in the first hole or can I move it to the second hole in the wooden piece underneath? Since the bar is metal maybe I can straighten it. IDK. We're about to get a baby grand and I'd like to be able to sell the upright or donate it to the school district.

Hi Jeff, I listened to the video on your channel. I couldn't hear the clicking, but the first step would be to narrow down where the sound is coming from. If you take the knee board off so you can see the pedal mechanism, you should be able to tell where exactly the sound is coming from. It could be a worn felt.

I have a question about my piano. If I watch the dampers and slowly press down the sustain pedal, the bass dampers seem to lift off the strings earlier and more than the treble section. There is no discernable sudden change from one end to the other, its quite uniform, but lets say for example the highest damped note the damper only lifts off the strings maybe an 1/8th of an inch, and the A0 damper lifts off a full 1/4 inch or more. The sustain pedal actuates a rod that goes up to a metal bar at the bottom of the action. What's causing this uneven lift, and what are the things I need to check or do to adjust this so the dampers all lift evenly? The lost motion adjustment seems to be correct, and this isn't causing any problems (yet) in playing. I do see I'll probably have to replace or fix the pin in the pedal trapwork, as it's starting to get a little loose and sloppy. The piano is a studio size upright.

It could be that the damper rod is bent. Here is a link to a video that shows repairing a broken damper rod hook: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZt-g9KJqb7OhX0.html It will help you better understand how the damper system works. I would suggest taking out the action and checking the damper lift with the action on a table so you can see the reason for the damper lift timing issue.

Thank you for your videos. Someone mentioned that her pedal was hard to press down. I have the same problem with my Yamaha upright. It takes all my strength to push the pedal down, and in the next day or two, I develop painful cramps in my leg from the effort. You mention that depending on the type of spring, it may be able to be adjusted. How would we do that adjustment? Is the spring near the screw or up high where it's hard to see? I don't see one near the screw. Would turning the screw have no effect on the tension of the pedal?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 3 жыл бұрын
The spring is typically under the bar that extends from the pedal over to the side of the piano where it attaches to the rod that goes up to the action.

I have a slightly different issue. Hope you can help. When I depress the damper pedal, the metal bracket attached to the bottom of the piano and supporting the wooden rod sways a bit back-and-forth. It looks like the same kind not bracket on this piano. Can I adjust back a couple of holes the metal rod connecting the pedal to the wooden rod? I think it solve the problem (or help). I assume that can be done, given the number of holes in the pedal. But how do I do it? Any advice you can give would be great. The previous owner just shoved in a block of wood but I'd rather fix it. Thanks
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 9 жыл бұрын
It sounds from your description that the pedal brackets are loose. You could first try tightening the screws that hold the pedal brackets down, but it could be that the holes for the screws are stripped which makes the screws loose. If that is the case you'll want to use something to make the screw holes tighter. You could put toothpicks in the screw holes which usually works or you could fill the holes with epoxy and make new screw holes. I hope this helps.

Helpful video. I have an old Heintzman upright (about 1936 I think). The damper pedal works on all the notes except for two. When I look inside, the lift movement of the dampers is nowhere near what your video shows and yet the damper pedal works fine in general. Also, the adjustment isn't a wing nut, it's a flat square nut and it's set inside a narrow squared off groove so there's no way to turn it. I'm wondering if the adjustment is made elsewhere? Anyway, my real question is how to adjust the damper on two individual notes? Thanks.
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 7 жыл бұрын
If there are individual dampers that are lifting earlier or later than the others when the damper pedal is lifted, then the damper wire would need to be bent to make it so it lifts earlier or later depending on what it needs.
@kelownagurrl
@kelownagurrl 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Would you happen to have a video on how to do that, or how I find the damper wire? :)
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 7 жыл бұрын
We don't have a video yet of this adjustment, but the damper wire is the rod that the damper block is attached to. If the damper is lifting too early, you would press the damper pedal and then bend the wire so the damper is going closer to the string. If it is lifting too late, you would press the damper pedal and bend the wire so it is coming further from the strings. Ideally it should be that with the damper pedal pressed all of the dampers should be at about the same level.

HELP, a few of my dampers aren’t moving enough, and aren’t with the rest of the other dampers, how do I fix it!!!!!!
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind Жыл бұрын
To make all the dampers lift at the same time with the pedal, the adjustment is made in the damper wire of the damper that is out of sync with the others. Using a damper wire regulating (bending) tool, the wire is grasped where it enters the damper flange and bent so that the damper head is moved away from the strings to make the damper lift sooner , and bent towards the string to make the damper lift later. After the initial bend is made a second bend is make just below the damper head in the opposite direction of the first bend in order do bring the damper head back to a parallel position with the string.

Hi! My piano makes this “zing” on some notes even without the damper pedal just by playing the notes. And its even noticeable when i play and use the damper pedal. What causes this? I’ve read that you need to pull out the action and file the damper felts? How do I do this? Any videos you might have or recommend?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, filing the dampers will probably take care of the problem. The reason for the zing is that the damper felts have gotten hard on the surface. I just take a small flat metal file and rub it across the face of the damper felts and it takes care of the problem. I usually do it with the action in the piano. I just pull back on the damper head and do the filing.

The damper wire would need to be bent so it lifts at the same time as the neighboring dampers. If the damper is lifting too soon, you’ll want to bend the wire toward the string so the damper lifts a little later. It doesn’t take much of a bend so a little goes a long way.

@@howardpianoind Thank you! You are so kind. I've tried it, but it seems to me, that the damper pedal lift is bent somehow. I mean... With the pedal, the central dampers lift much less than their "outskirts" neighbors. I love to watch your videos they really help me a lot in this journey of adjusting my piano.
