While we're waiting for parts on the 65 Pan, Cameraman Mike has been polishing parts for his Dyna. So, I'll adjust the clutch and see if I can make it a little nicer than it was. Improvements here, make for a much nicer ride.

Hello Pacific Mike I would first like to thank you for the educational videos you put out. I have learned so much from them, and really enjoy the way you present them. You and the other Mike do a great job! My Fiancé, of twenty years LOL, had to stop riding just before we met. She had a back injury and some other medical issues going on where she doesn’t trust herself to be able to hold the bike up all the time. She has a 1977 FXE 1200 Super Glide that has been sitting and not run since she stopped riding. She enjoys riding with me on my scooter. One night in a gin joint talking with a friend, who is very knowledgeable in the older Harley’s, about my Fiancé bike I was telling him that I really wish she could ride again. He stated that he believed if he checked with some of his friends that collect old Harley parts that he could locate a Servi-Car frame and rear end. He further claimed that it would not take much to put the motor and transmission from her FXE into that frame. I thought this was a great idea as it would be using some of the parts from her old bike that she loves. Is this a good idea, or just crazy? I’m thinking that I should try and get a Servi-Car frame from the Shovel Head era? Is there any other advice you could give me? Thank you for your time and I would completely understand if you don’t have time to respond. I bet you get thousands of questions a day. Hope to see you out on the road!!
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Thank You. It was pretty common years ago. It is a lot of work and there are a lot of ways to go. The Servicar is a great idea if you are or have access to a real frame guy. The Servicar frame is built only to accept a 45 cu. in. Flathead motor and 3 speed transmission. So, people would splice two frames together, a big twin in the front, Servicar in the rear. Now, there are a lot of companies marketing kits to turn two wheelers into trikes and they are "model specific" so things will fit. Some of them are very expensive and some are much more reasonable. Search around on the Internet. You might be very surprised. There are also used late model trikes out there now. Shovelheads are getting more valuable. That's uh, "creative financing."

I do hope to see you out on the road.

Years ago I bought a little tool that clamps over the end of the cable and had a hole in it for your straw. The upper end is sealed off when you tighten it and the lower end is clamped around the outside of the cable. When you shoot the lube the propellant sends it down the cable. Worked well for the off road stuff that was always dirty.

Here’s a tip for you if you’d like to use it. To help avoid problems with corrosion on your threads of your clutch cable, apply a thin coat of anti-seize on the threads and work it into the long adjuster nut and up enough to also cover the threads under the lock nut. When done with your adjustment, apply a thin coating of Vaseline over the entire adjustment surfaces before you slide your rubber boot back over it. The anti-seize will make the threads turn easily for the next adjustment, and the Vaseline will protect the surfaces from moisture that gets up under that boot. I hope this was useful to you.

I have good luck with sewing oil on the cable. I apply it in an old fashioned oil can. The ones you pump the bottom with your thumb. I can lube while it's still connected. I pull the collar back and put my oil can tip like you did with the spray can in the video. It flows right down the cable in no time. When my adjuster is wet I know i'm done. I did it your way before (the correct way), but once you lose the snap ring like I did, I said that's enough. lol I never found that snap ring, and I had to use one close to the same size for a while, until I got the correct sized ring. To be honest, now I don't remember if I ever did change it out. Oh boy!

Good morning Mr Pacific, Cameraman Mike, hope all is well. Beautiful color on that Dyna, very sharp looking mobile, never get sick of seeing it. I've tried everything and can't prevent my adjuster from rusting, just constant maintenance, this is on an aftermarket Teflon coated Magnum cable to boot, they all rust lol. Having a 2002 Night Train, I'm very familiar with the Twin Cam primary and I think their ramp and ball design is bulletproof, the entire clutch assembly in my opinion, very user friendly and super easy to dial in, maybe I'm bias lol. Anyway, whatever system it is, the important thing is proper maintenance and workmanship, which goes without saying when Mike touches anything. Take care of yourself Mike and great work.

I chuckled at the beginning when you started the video with a big sigh. I appreciate you doing these videos. I know my stress level would elevate being on camera. My niece has a 2010 HD softail cvo convertible FLSTE2 that she complains about not going into 1st gear during a downshift while riding on the road. She is only 4 feet 11 inches. During troubleshooting a problem I always first consider is the operation being completed properly. I call this "operator error" or OE. Is she depressing the clutch at the correct time and is she depressing it all the way. Plus since she is only having this problem during the last downshift, is it because of fatigue? What do you think Mike?
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Well, I've not heard of any "inherent problem" with a downshift to first. I remember when the five speeds first came out and the big complaint was they couldn't put the bike into neutral once they were stopped. It only slides in while you're moving. I'll bet, if you move that shifter lever up one spline, it will solve the problem. She probably doesn't have a large foot, so pivoting it may not put enough movement on the lever. I used to fit a lot of people to their bikes. I'd ride next to them and see what their body wanted to do.

Mike, I recently did the same clutch adjustment procedure as you, and when it came time to back out the adjuster screw, with half a turn out, I had way too much slack in the cable. I was not able to take out the slack with the cable adjusting nut. The only way I could take out the slack is by not backing out the adjusting screw the half turn. I left it alone when I had it seated lightly. Why caused that? I hope to run into you one of these days at American Motorcycle in Banning.
@pacificmike95017 ай бұрын
Look carefully into the fill hole on your tans. See if the arm has backed up, taking up the slack. If not, back it up with a screwdriver, then, adjust the center screw on the clutch.
Something I’ve done many times before but here I am watching the whole video 😂. Just curious what is going on with the flathead?

Thanks for sharing, HD dealership just replaced my cable a few days ago & it was great until this morning on the way work it started up again, having a hard time shifting & finding neutral, so got to work and pulled the cable to see how slack (supposed to be 1/8” gap roughly) well,, I got about 1/2”, so wouldn’t I want to shorten the cable to make less slack? Right now the clutch engages when I barely let the lever out, and when I pull the clutch lever in if feels like the bike wants to go forward still. I’m assuming after a new clutch cable installed that the clutch cable will need to be adjusted after several miles of riding (breaking the clutch cable in) is that normal or is my throw out bearings gone bad)?? Any recommendations or suggestions much appreciated Mike. And based on your describing the cable in order to remove clutch lever that you are tightening the cable before hand, did you mean loosening the cable?

Try to adjust the cable properly. Of course, I don't know what the motorcycle is, so I 'll just give you a very basic answer. First, make sure the clutch is adjusted properly. The way this is done is to loosen the cable completely, then adjust the center adjusting screw at the clutch. Then, adjust the cable. By lengthening the cable housing, you effectively shorten the length of the cable. Not to be rude, but please, buy a service manual. It's all in the details. If you can, go back to the dealership, and understand that the adjuster may not have been in position when it was adjusted. They can probably fix you right up in a few minutes. This does happen occasionally.

On my Fat Boy I'm missing the anti-rattle clip as well. Are they something that's rough to put back on? My buddy's bike is missing his also. Just wondering.
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
They break and fall off. Every dealership has a bag of them in their parts room. They aren't expensive. It is most easily replaced when the lever is off.

Do you have a video on how to adjust the mousetrap clutch on a panhead? Thanks
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
Yes. It is on my Knucklehead. Knuckleheads never came with mousetraps, but it is the same exactly as if it were on a Panhead. Go to our KZfaq homepage. Tap on the word "videos" and they will all come up and you can go through them. Or, just go to KZfaq and enter the word mousetrap and it should come up pretty easy.

The knowledge, the skill & experience, give 'Mission-creep Mike' a warm glow, as he Cyclops away behind lenses, recording the magic full flow. No chanting nor potions are needed, we can 'see what is needed' as such, while the Master adjusts in right order, & takes all the slop out your clutch. Ah, for the ways of the Greenwood are many . . . eg. To our North lies the village of Scrooby, of the Pilgrim Fathers fame, & ancestors are always well handy, when looking for someone to blame. Their church door once held a parchment, that offered a three groat reward, for 'Mayflower Mike & his pliers' - 'cos they figured he'd run off abroad. (Please note - absolutely no 'pheasant plucker' jokes were even faintly alluded to in this drivel : )

It would be nice to have a place to ride where every cage driver wasn't playing with their cellphone instead of actually driving the car. I almost got hit 10 times in one hour while taking a ride in my hometown. My bike is loud and I have 50 years of total experience riding a 2 wheeler starting out on a mini bike when I was 8 or something. Probably younger. It's dangerous out on the streets these days. People in cars are not paying attention to their driving.
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
Sadly, people are not paying attention to each other. People are not obstacles. They are people. We have to try to make a difference. I once chased a young lately about half a mile to inform her she had pulled out in front of me. I explained that I knew she hadn't done it on purpose, but would she please be more careful. Honestly, I think I made an impression.
