I remember standing next to a smartly dressed military officer during Fleet Week in San Francisco and something or someone inside me wanting to ask to shake his hand and thank him for his service. Didn't really have the courage to do so. Didn't seem right somehow. Looking back I think that with all due respect I hesitated because I believe as much as the military is necessary for our country's defense and of the men and women that serve and the sacrifices they make, there will be a time when our nature and our being may no longer see violence as a solution. And fear doesn't create conflict. And a better understanding comes from knowing who we are inside and how we can relate to each other in a more peaceful way. It gave me pause for thought at the time. I still imagine though what it would have been like to ask to shake his hand and thank him just the same.

I was watching a video about soldiers being taught how to accept this and most of them feel uncomfortable. I have family who are soldiers who are also against this. The news media makes it all seem so happy and okay but in reality most soldiers hate this but cant question their superiors. The one thing you learn in the military it is NOT a Democracy.

We may not achieve these things in our lifetime. We can only give it our best effort.
