How to use the use the Noise Reduction effect in Adobe Audition.
Jeff Sengstack is the author of the lynda.com tutorial: Soundbooth Essential Training
www.lynda.com/Soundbooth-CS5-t...
Note: Soundbooth and Audition share several characteristics, including the Noise Reduction workflow. With the release of CS5.5, Adobe has discontinued Soundbooth. Audition has been a stand-alone, Windows-only product for a few years. For CS5.5, it was re-engineered to make it Windows & Mac compatible and it is now included in Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium and Master Collection.

@JeffSengstack

After. Do all editing that will change volume levels first. Then do noise reduction. That way, you avoid amplifying any noise artifacts that you might not have noticed before you changed levels.

Thanks a bunch, Jeff! I'm not surprised by your reply as I thought the waterfall rushing sound covered a pretty wide frequency range. I do subscribe to CC, so I'll check out that Sound Remover effect. I'm also having to contend with a helicopter flying overhead, as the wedding was close to Camp Pendleton, but alas, there's only so much that can be done if it's an outdoor wedding! Thanks again!

Thanks for the tutorial. Maybe I'm being very picky. I don't have a hum as such, more like a very faint hiss from the radio mics. I've removed it best I can but it does seem to distort the voices slightly.... but it's barely noticeable to be honest.

You can remove the dialogue if it's centered in the clip. To do that use the Center Channel Extractor effect. If the voices are spread out, using that effect becomes impractical.

This is very helpful and you are 100% correct about that watery metallic sound (that's a perfect description btw). I seem to encounter that side effect often, but how do you get rid of it. In some cases, that sound is worse than the noise, so it sort of makes the whole attempt futile. Sometimes I have been able to decrease by not applying the NR effect so aggressively, but then sometimes there is a trace of noise left. I guess it is not a 100% solution?
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 8 жыл бұрын
Your conclusion is correct. Depending on the noise, the noise print used in the Noise Reduction effect can have a wide range and complex set of frequencies. When working with that type of noise, the Noise Reduction effect will have a much harder time making quality sound. In those cases, it comes down to adjusting the amount of noise you want to remove (percent and dB) relative to your perception of the sound quality.
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 11 жыл бұрын
I would first try to remove the BG noise a little at at time. Apply the effect several times at light settings. That might reduce the resulting tinniness. To make voices richer -- use an EQ effect to add some bass and mid-tones. Or overdub. Mix two or three versions of the same clip with miniscule offsets in time. Finally, if the BG sound is distinct -- like a hum -- the upcoming version of Audition has a new Sound Remover effect that does wonders with dynamic, foreground sound.

Noise Reduction is a "process" effect, meaning it can be applied only directly to a clip. It can not be used in the Effects rack or in a Multitrack session.

Hi! Very well explained! How do I copy or apply the noise reduction I`ve just made to other pieces of the same speech? (considering I have imported a project from Premiere with cuts in it) Do I have to apply the reduction to each piece of audio?
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 8 жыл бұрын
Once you create a noise print, it remains the current print until you make another one. So, you can open a clip, capture a noise print, use it with Noise Reduction, then simply apply Noise Reduction to each clip, one at a time, without making a new noise print. Or you can import the original full audio clip used in P Pro, do noise reduction on it, save it under a new name, and replace that clip in P Pro. To replace a clip, right-click that clip in the Project Panel and choose Replace Footage.

Hi Terry. Unfortunately, falling water is a lot like "white" noise in that it includes a full range of frequencies. So removing waterfall noise will likely remove a lot of other audio as well. Your best bet is to use Audition's Noise Reduction effect and capture a noise print of the waterfall when no one is speaking. You'll need to do this as a separate process for each audio source. If you have Audition CC, its new Sound Remover effect might work better.

Hi Jeff. Used Audition CS6 for the 1st time, helping my son on his school project. You are correct when you exclaimed "Amazing" for removing a background noise throughout an entire clip. The problem the voices are so intermingled with the BG noise that when noise was removed the voices are very watery/tinny as you describe. Is there a tool/process for adding richness back to the voices after the noise removal? Thanks for great tuts, looking forward to watching more. Dave Manley

Hi, Jeff! Wonder if you could offer a suggestion on how I might remove--or at least minimize--the sound of a waterfall in the background of the spoken word? I was shooting a wedding for a friend and the venue had a waterfall running while the ceremony was in progress. I had 3 audio sources and they all had the waterfall noise in them...BUMMER! I was watching this video but the noises in your example weren't as disruptive as the waterfall sound. What might you recommend? Thanks a bunch!

If I applied this effect, saved it and closed audition. Then I decided to change my mind and re-edit the clip how can I do that? There's no way for me to reset it
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 8 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The process of editing audio clips (as opposed to applying effects in a multitrack session) is "destructive." If you apply one or more edits to a clip and then save that clip using the clip's original file name, you will have changed the original clip. And you can't un-do those edits. So...when editing a clip, use Save As and give that clip a new name like "original-clip-edited.wav."

can you do this with a snare drum from song?
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 10 жыл бұрын
Probably, but a snare drum is not a generic, background sound like those I cover in this video. It's a dynamic foreground sound. In that case, your best bet is to use the Sound Remover effect (Adobe added it to Audition CC, which was released after I did this video). Select a few samples of the snare drum using the Paintbrush Selection Tool (hold down the Shift key to get more than one selection) and choose Effects > Noise Reduction > Learn Sound Model. Use the Time Selection Tool to highlight the portion of the clip you want to fix and then choose Effects > Noise Reduction > Sound Remover. To figure out what the various settings do, click the "i" information button in the upper right corner of the effect dialog box to open your browser to the Help file section on this effect.

What about removing the main dialogue and just keeping the Background Music (both voice and music in a single track) I have used the spectral editor and I know that the whole thing is the yellow parts. The thing is, there isn't much uniformity in the track, there are small yellow bits all over it, and I need that all so I can keep the sad, dark tone. What do I do?
@TTPotterUltraPower
@TTPotterUltraPower 12 жыл бұрын
Oh I already tried that, it just gives me muffled noises and faint but audible versions of the dialogue which sounds robotic. The dialogue is not centered. What can I do to select all the parts of the same color in the spectral editor? That's the only way...

I have a project where once I do this, my vocals get incredibly tinny. How do I fix that?
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 10 жыл бұрын
That is the downside to some noise reduction/removal. If the noise is too close in pitch to the sound you want to retain, heavy reduction can lead to that tinny sound. To remedy that, you can try a couple approaches. The easiest but less desirable method is to simply do less intense noise reduction. Or, working in the spectral frequency view, you can use selection tools to highlight a frequency range that is above the pitch for your voice and use stronger noise reduction on that. And then select the range that includes your vocals and do less intense reduction on that.

That is a common result. The more noise you remove the more robotic (metallic) the vocals. The only suggestion I can make is to adjust the two sliders in the Noise Reduction effect as you listen to the results, trying to find the best middle ground.
@JeffSengstack

You can copy a selection from one clip and paste it into another clip or into the current clip. Or you can make a selection and copy it to a new clip. For more information on that go to the link I put in the description (KZfaq does not permit links in comments).
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 12 жыл бұрын
Your results using the Center Channel Extractor are not uncommon. As for selecting all the parts of the same color...that can be done, but I don't know that it will work. You can use a selection tool to select a brightly colored region, and then copy/paste that selection to a clip. But colors don't represent voices or specific sounds, they represent volume levels within a frequency range. The louder the sound the brighter the color. Selecting a color, leaves out a whole lot of frequencies.
