I’m very sorry to hear you lost your dog. I lost my dog many years ago but by the good grace a dog catcher found him along the side of the freeway. He was seconds from death says the dog catcher and caught him just in time. I still get nightmares about it to this day 20 years later.

They are the most amazing creatures!! I have a rescue UK greyhound from racing and she fitted in right away with our family at 6 years of age! To see them run on their own terms is a sight to behold, everyone on our field, where we walk her, stop and admire the gracefulness and elegance of her stride. She's nearly 12 now and although it took a bit of time (given her racing background) she has a character and personality that makes me smile everyday!

Retired Greyhounds are amazing. They deserve so much more respect, my by is loving - intelligent and compassionate. Life wit my Cecil would not be the same without him, i'm his third adoption after retirement. The first two left him heart broken. Two years after bringing him hope for e couple of weeks... He is so close to us and he understand just about everything and I even understand him. At almost 10 he is still learning new things to do also to help him communicate what he wants, its just so cute to watch him. He has become territorial too when there were strangers outside the house - OMG greyhounds have a VERY SCARY POWERFUL BARK... Had 3 others in the past and barely heard a whisper. No other dog could ever match up to a Greyhound.

Congratulations for the love and dedication to save and give a second change to these beautiful creatures . I honestly think it should have a law or something to prevent people of using greyhounds for only a matter of time for racing and after that getting rid of it. They should take care of their dogs after the retirement as well, it is only fair.

I wouldn't go as far to say they NEED to run, just give them the opportunity and they will if they want too. The stars and planets have to align before my lazy sack of bones grey does more than the slowest walk on the planet. At the dog park she would just slowly walk from person to person, giving them those manipulative eyes begging for some rubbins. Would rarely run even when most of the other greys were tearing it up.

I've had 8 ex-racers. One loved to run, but she had a short & marginal racing career. Another was a champion racer, but he preferred to trot and sniff at the beach, with the occasional swim.

"They have to run. We have lots of dog parks now, so there's no reason why your dog can't go run somewhere" Although I agree, the laws are different where I am. I live in Tasmania, Australia and by law greys must be muzzled and on leash at ALL times, even in dog parks. It's really sad and I hope it gets changed someday soon. I let my grey off in the dog park anyway, just always have to keep a sharp eye, always worried I'll get in trouble.
@deepcreekfilms6706

Hopefully those laws will change soon. Our greys used to run a lot when we first brought them home (we have a tiny yard they'd loop a couple of times a week). Now, they are pretty much couch potatoes and run once a month. Good luck to you!

I don't believe in selective breeding and I always rescue but greyhounds would be my favorite breed if I had to choose, we've had three Grey's throughout my life and ive absolutely loved them, to imagine someone pumping them full of drugs and keeping them in a tiny cage breaks my heart

I’d love to get a greyhound and I might once I can get the chance, but as you can see, I have guinea pigs, and we can’t afford a door there, and I know how high their prey drive is. I know that there are grey’s who don’t have much of a prey drive, but we can’t risk it.

I’m certain you’d be able to find a Greyhound that wouldn’t bother you little fellas. Don’t give up hope! We had three greys, two of which were tested not cat friendly and they got along great with our cat.

This just let's the racing dog breeders off the hook. People who use racing dogs should be required to pay for the care of the dogs for their entire life. I'd never subsidize the irresponsible behavior of others.
@meeome7367

ThisbeandPyramus agreed, ive had 3 grey hounds in my life and two of them died because of what those people did to them. the third one is still alive and well and hasn't been in the racing circuit, and I absolutely love him, to imagine someone pumping him full of drugs and keeping him in a small cage breaks my heart.

Would a greyhound be a good choice for a first time dog owner? Or would they need someone with more dog experience...
@joeforzano
@joeforzano 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think as a first time dog owner, a greyhound can be a great choice. They are already used to handling and training and they are crate trained from their racing days. We had three at one time and they are total couch potatoes! Most greyhound rescues will know about the temperament and personalities of the ex-racers that are up for adoption. Adjusting to home life takes a little time (as with any new pet), but in the end, you'll have have a wonderful companion! Good luck!

You need to remember though that these dogs are not raised in normal home environments. Many of them are fearful of common household things, such as stairs, and have serious separation anxiety, which manifests in the dog absolutely destroying the house. They're generally also very stubborn dogs. They're not bred to want to please people like some other dogs are, and they are harder to obedience and trick train than others, especially when they come from a track, because they never learned to learn. They're definitely more challenging on average to get adjusted properly in a home than many dogs. And I've seen many returned to their rescues because people just couldn't handle it. But if you know what you're doing, or if you get one of the low maintenance dogs, you'll be okay. Just make sure you go through an organization that fosters and trains the dogs in a home environment first, rather than getting a dog straight off the track.

yes as a first time dog owner. They are undemanding and learn very quickly in their new home. You may have to practice the stairs a few times but they will get it after a few goes. other than that, they walk brilliantly on a lead and never pull. All they need is a large soft warm bed as they sleep most of the time but enjoy their walk. They do like to run now and again so find a park where you can let them off lead. They only need a quick sprint to tire them out but a couple of walks a day is necessary for any Dog. They must eat from a high stand due to possible bloat as they wolf down their food. other than that very easy maintainance to have a GH. You wont regret it!
