I have pet rat. Have had rats for years. I've had my rats siblings actually help nurse them back to health by laying on them and keeping them warm before. You don't realize how compassionate rats are until you see one sick and see the siblings love on them
@poematic2652

Awweh that’s the sweetest! We’ve usually had sister rats, most of the time when they get sick they stayed away from one another... the well ones would warm themselves with blankets and sometimes check on the sick sister, but wouldn’t stay for long. They would literally stay on different levels throughout the night😪they are very compassionate on one another I agree to that! But just asking a question but have you ever had a group of rats where they’d develop a habit that is hard to train them out of? Every group of rats (rescued/biological brother or sister/non-biologically related) we’ve had always bit us to go to bed.. they’d bite us until we’d bleed, we bought home two brothers, one of then would bite and nip our face for no reason, he has passed away, his brother on the other hand is aggressive to other rats but is the most sweetest alone. It’s quite sad tbh. But it was just a question I wanted to ask as you said you’ve looked after rats for years😊I’m still learning since only 2015, not very long enough to me lol

@@poematic2652 not all rats are rat friendly, however there is hormonal aggression that will show up between 5 months to 14 months. You can get your rat neutered by a rat savvy vet or you can separate your aggressive boy out to keep your other rats safe. I myself prefer neutering, giving a 1 month separation then following proper introduction protocol to get the neutered male back into the mischief.

@@tuckerderatt2945 we did reconsider neutering, I forgot why we didn't.. but next time if we get bucks, we will certainly do so! I do agree! we've had a few rats that were not that friendly but they were rescues, old, sick, and we were quite scary to them which we understood but we kept trying and so did they for us and themselves within improvle. I do feel that our 'aggressive' buck that had passed wanted space because our loveable boy always was wanting his attention no matter where this fella went (either if he was in his high hammock, top/bottom level cage or out for his daily run, his brother was always by his side. (His brother is also blind 'PEW'.) Thank you so much for your advice, I will try taking it in the future!😊

@@poematic2652 if his brother was blind & was following him, he was using him as his own "seeing eye rat" & companion. I've had rats over 5 decades & a few were blind. They did like having a companion, some volunteered to be their "seeing eye rat" & some were chosen by the blind rat. The volunteers were the sweetest, they would guide them up & down ramps, levels, hammocks, bring treats, food & protect if a fight broke out.

That poor rat. He needs at least one buddy and a MUCH bigger cage holy cow. And plenty of time out to play and exercise, at least an hour a day. Poor little guy, no wonder he's sneezing. Stress is a huge trigger for myco to flare up (once it colonises the rat, it's almost impossible to clear completely), and having a cat around him is almost certainly going to add to that stress. Poor little chap.
@belladonnafae1988

I got so mad. The cage isn't even suitable for a hamster let alone a rat. The poor guy needs buddies of similar size and age and in the first 2 weeks of being in a new home he's going to get sneezes. Dark chocolate chip every day and he'll be fine. He's not 8 weeks old at all either. He's far too big to be that young. He's gotta be 6 months old. And yip that cat is gonna be hell for the rat. He needs. Single critter nation type cage at the minimum, lots of hides and hammocks and at least 2 friends. And a mixed balanced diet not pellets

@@belladonnafae1988 Yep. Either that or he would be the biggest 10-week buck I've ever seen. Though honestly, I don't have an issue with antibiotics, moving sniffles should have improved after 2 weeks already and if he's not well in himself, then he really needs something better - though the chocolate chip won't hurt at all! I must admit I've nebulised my rats before when they've had pneumonia and severe chronic myco issues, but I suspect this poor little guy has been sitting in the pet store for ages alone and the staff have just lied to a couple of people who, honestly, know very little about rats. The poor boy has probably been sneezing the entire time he was there, too. Hell, I saw a pet store who deliberately put a buck into a cage of does, because he wasn't selling and they thought someone else might take him thinking he was a she... and when I called them out on the risk of those poor babies ending up pregnant, they just shrugged and said "they can bring the babies back to sell" = like having a litter at a couple of months old wouldn't cause all kinds of issues for a still-growing doe. And this wasn't a small pet store, this was a HUGE UK chain, too. I wish pet stores didn't sell animals, though. The conditions they're bred in are utterly horrific and it clearly wasn't a pet store that has ANY idea about how to properly care for rats.

@@JustAnotherBuckyLover I bet it was pets at home xD im totally with you. Dark choc was always my first port of call when my boys got a sniffle then if it didn't shift or they started with porphyrin then I'd go get them some antibiotics. Luckily never needed to nebulize any of my boys. If antibiotics didn't sort it they were too far gone, but that only happened twice. Most ended up passing from old age, one from a bad tooth abscess (he passed during surgery) and one from a tumour and old age. Think only 2 went from uris and they were quite young and weak to begin with.

@@belladonnafae1988 I could deny your guess... but then I'd be a liar. LOL, I've had a lot of rats over a lot of years, and sadly some were just seriously prone to resp issues. When you get to the stage where you're taking care of a mischief of a dozen or more rats at once, then you tend to have to deal with most things at some stage! It's tough when they get seriously sick with pneumonia - luckily my vet at the time was amazing and would just lend us an incubator and taught me how to provide fluids under the skin, as well as injections of antibiotics, steroids etc. Unfortunately, my health's declined recently and after 20+ years of being owned by rats, I had to let the colony taper out because I simply couldn't give them the love, care and attention they deserved (heck, I'm I can't even manage myself anymore lol). But good grief, I miss them like crazy. It just makes me so sad to see this. From what I can find, the original show was filmed around December of 2015, so it's probably moot now... but I hope he got a bigger cage and a buddy to play with, too, at some point.

Yep. I had a Siamese cat for 17 years who absolutely adored me and I her. But twice, she deliberately peed on me to express extreme displeasure. Once, I was moving from one apartment to another and she was loose in the car while other cats were in their carriers. She was howling so loudly it was distracting me, and I lost my temper and yelled at her equally loudly. She climbed in my lap and peed on me immediately. I never yelled at her like that again. A few years later we were living in Florida where the fleas were awful, before the days of the flea meds once a month to the base of the skull. I used a flea dip on them that was just awful, but worked. They all tolerated it except the Siamese, who hated all baths, particularly this one. She screamed so loudly during it that I was afraid the neighbors would think I was torturing her. That night, I went to bed and the Siamese was still angry and ready for payback. As soon as I settled in, she just jumped up with me as usual, but instead of snuggling as she usually did, you guessed it, she peed on me. I never used that stuff again. She never peed on me again.

So the ducks leg injury might be the result of tying a rope to it, just as they now have on the other leg. Given the way he flaps so intensely, my guess is a rope was tied to the injured leg and the force of his flapping caused the injury. The scar on that leg also seems to fit my suspicion but it’s just a guess. Only the duck can tell us what really happened 😁

I had a singleton rat, but he had regular play-dates with other rats and was out of his cage on my shoulder for 75% of the day. He lived for about four and a half years, which for a "feeder" rat (I got him from a reptile dealer who sold live rats and mice as food) wasn't bad. He died of old age and was loved from the very second I bought him. Yes, it's idea for them to have a companion, but if you have the time to dedicate to them (and I mean, most of your time) they can be happy and healthy.

We like setting up mazes and obstacle courses for them and they really seem to enjoy them. And, of course, they love treats. :o) Marcus's tumor sounds a little like the liver cancer they found in my daughter's cat. It was large and full of blood vessels and so wrapped around a major blood vessel that they could not get it all. The good news was it was low grade/slow growing and the cat was 17 years old. She just turned 18 and seems to be doing fine.

No, he needs freedom above all, his mummy, daddy, his darling, his little rat children, other rats. Animals are in grave danger when they are near the atheists who even don't know who they themselves truly are. Near them, the animals slowly but surely degenerate. Body conscious people touch their bodies and so, they dull their sharpened senses that are necessary for life in the wilderness. In the nature, an animal parent would, without hesitation, kill a weak his or her child or even if there they don't have enough food to feed them. They kill that body and that soul goes somewhere else where there could be plenty of food, for example. As long as we are all here, the souls will continue to take rebirth. It doesn't mean if we don't see some type of animals here any more that that species became extinct no, they hide themselves somewhere deep in the jungles or somewhere else because no soul can leave this physical stage before the very end of this drama cycle. Few months ago I saw that the elephants live in China, what a great and sweet surprise that was to me. Those animal souls wish freedom but those embodied human souls don't allow them to leave. The bondage of karma is the worst thing you can imagine. It is a closed, vicious cycle! I can be happy and content that drama doesn't put any diseased animal on my life path, it means that we, I and those all animals gave respect of keeping distance from each others, we gave each others that freedom. People even don't know that by feeding an animal with meat, they kill their own happiness because eating of meat is a form of violence, you or some other in your name must kill for you to be able to eat the flesh from that costume. There, for example, in Bondi Vet, they try to heal those animals and after their businesses are finished they go home or out and eat meat. So, is it the love towards the animals or a hunger towards money? Yes, the Christian souls would tell that some animals eat meat from the beginning of time but first coming of one particular religion into this drama cycle is not considered to be "the beginning of time"! The beginning of time is, in fact and clearly, 3000 years before the first Christian soul came here. If you didn't read about that truth in the Bible, it means that you read these days falsified the Holy Bible. The first and the purest Christian soul, Christ, came about 2000 years ago from now in this drama cycle, from Nirvana, the soul world. At that time, it was Copper age, the third age of this drama cycle and that is the time when all truth is already lost in this world. Those fallen deities, now Hindus are already here, those of Islam came, Buddhists came.. After 1250 years of that Copper age comes the Iron age, then total destruction of this old world, called hell, begins and again, the new Golden age is to dawn, and again Silver age, and Copper age are to come and so again and again this drama cycle repeats identically because the souls play their parts, not bodies... Be soul conscious, have emerged awareness that we are all brother souls and remember the Supreme Father, the Supreme Soul, God Shiva in His form of a point of light. Our (soul) form is the same. We are the stars. We are to leave this physical stage soon.. Remembrance of the Father means salvation. When we will be in salvation, in that future paradise, the animals there will also be in salvation, happy and peaceful, playful and never eaten by those the most elevated beings, the deities.

I absolutely ADORE rats. I had beautiful boys for 14 years! Respiratory is a huge problem for them. One of my babies was a runt and he was on prednisone for most of his life. Rats are exceedingly affectionate and so intelligent. My boys would sleep with me and what a beautiful little face to wake up to. Or, in the case of my silver, I would wake with him draped over my forehead still asleep he would also ring the bells in his cage if it was bedtime and I had not gotten him yet. I couldn't have two at a time my cage wasn't big enough and it was twice the size of the one the two fellas have. But my boys always had lots of out time, lots of play and toys, they were happy wee bairns and I miss them terribly.

My beautiful Silkie had a skin condition and numerous trips to the vet...so, let's see, just how many people would have actually paid for the vets or just let the rats suffer or put them out or fed them to a snake. My babies preferred life, love and comfort and that is exactly what they got even without another rat in the cage.

@@Ravennwing rats are social animals and need same species company to thrive. You're not special or a top notch pet owner for taking your pet to the vet. That's the bare minimum to pet care. Rats need company, there are many many scientific studies that prove this, they get stressed, depressed and lonely without other rats to interact with. So much so that even in labs where they are tested on they MUST be housed in groups by law. Humans cannot replicate behaviours like social grooming and sleeping together and we do not speak rat. You can't argue with facts of the matter, rats need company and anything else is frankly not adequate.

Actually, it’s perfectly fine to keep cats and rats in the same household, so long as the cats don’t have constant access to the rats or their cage(keeping the cage in a room with the door closed is usually fine), and that they’re all supervised any time the rats are taken out. It can also be a good idea to try and teach your cat(s) to be calm around the cage any time they do have access; keep them from jumping or climbing on it, trying to get inside, pawing at it, etc. That can reduce a bit of the stress those situations may put on the rat. I’ve kept rats for years and my family has always had cats at the same time, and there’s never been any issues. Well, other than the time our cat Musket(who was closely supervised despite never showing any interest in small animals) laid on top of my late rat Pepperjack after he’d tried to jump off my shoulder onto Musket’s back. Neither were harmed and they were quickly separated, but Pepperjack immediately wanted to go back in his cage to groom himself for several minutes.

@@lindadickson783 You can't be guaranteed to teach any animal to not have their prey drive - and even if they don't deliberately attack and hurt the small critter, it would be SO easy for the cat to accidentally hurt a rodent while "playing". That bopping? Could easily smack the hamster off a table, or into a wall, or startle it so much it has a heart attack, or accidentally puncture the skin with the teeth or claws. - I'm sure your cat was wonderful - but the very fact that your cat also batted at the hamster, period, demonstrates WHY it's foolhardy thing to do. I'm very glad to hear that your hammy lived a good, long life - and hopefully wasn't too stressed by the interactions, because MANY small critters are stressed just by the smell of predators or their presence outside the cage. But I've seen too many horror stories by animals that "wouldn't hurt a fly" who one day did. It just not worth the risk.
@3DPlagueDR
@3DPlagueDR 2 жыл бұрын
Doing that with the hamster free is incredibly risky. It’s not worth it. Not just from the perspective of the cat being able to kill the hamster but the hamster’s stress at having this predator nearby. Personally, my cat and hamster got along but my hamster would be in her ball during that time. We’d section off the hallway with a gate so she could run through my room and the hallway. My tabby would lay in the middle of the hall where my hamster would run herself into his belly, he’d kick her away, then she’d do it again. Both could easily go anywhere else and that’s just what they chose to do.

Rats also need out of cage play time not just a friend. They should always have a friend. Period. And they should always have a bigger cage. Period. They are highly intelligent and active animals and should always have time out of the cage. In my opinion the way they are being kept is abusive. Yes the rat is loved but ignorance is no excuse for improper care. Rats have the intelligence to mourn their lost cage mates, stress out when they have been taken away, and have the capacity for empathy when their buddies are hurting, sick, or in trouble
