I had a planted tank up and growing for almost a year, then I just for the hell of it ,put a wavemaker in it and the growth and Heath just exploded ,I was shocked at how the tank responded!!! I later saw this video and now it all makes sense! I really thought I'd stumbled on a planted tank secret... LoL!!!! Great video and info!!

I’m experimenting with creating tidal flow, like at the benthic zone of a large lake. I’m thinking a 30 minutes-1 hour of high circular flow in the morning in one direction, and 30 minutes in the evening in the opposite direction with a separate powerhead. In the middle of the day, both powerheads will come on to create a vortex for 2x 30 minutes. This will be on a timer. I would have longer periods of flow, but my tank has low-flow species in it, so this is mostly to get natural-looking plant growth and see how the animal behavior changes with the types of flow. I’m fascinated with biological rhythms.

Great video! I actually just picked up a directional u-tube after seeing it in another video of yours and got it running. Went to check to see your positioning and boom, a video with great detail on it. Seriously applaud you. People talk about making sure you gave great flow but no one follows through in explanation. This has been one of the biggest challenges for me. Giving the gyre flow a shot now. Between the Halo lights and now filter outputs your slowly changing my tank. 👍

+ADU Aquascaping So I'm trying to the circular flow now, switched over to my 425 from the 240 I was using. The flow is pretty strong now, but I feel like it may be a bit much for the fish. When I was using the gyre flow, I thought the middle was getting plenty of movement, but the sides didn't seem to get as much. Do you notice that also? I have a pretty standard tank that just has a pile of wood at about 1/3 point from the left. Nothing else to block flow. I'm thinking about running 2 Koralia 240's in addition to my lily pipe from my Fluval 406 instead of the one 425. What do you think it better? Previously I had my lily pipe in the front right and my 240 pump right under it, to kinda boost the lily's flow. The flow really slowed once it hit the other end of my tank though. This flow stuff just really is the bane of my existence and I think the last piece I'm missing in my tank.

That explains it. I have a 30G low tech planted tank. About a week ago I added a small sponge filter. In a week the plants have grown wild. The hygrophilia is coming out of the top. Bacopa is a bush half way out even the Vallisneria has started to grow despite me using liquid carbon and having cut it back. The water chemistry has not changed. It must be the flow as the sponge has the full output of the pump causing a lot of ripples and movement.

Hey man I totally agree with the idea. the reasoning behind the conclusion I have a point I feel that could be added. I personally feel the flow in our planted aquariums mainly contributes to the even distribution of chemistry. hence avoiding hot spots of chemistry and lacking spots of chemistry. In ponds or rivers however the same logic will vary. there is newly available fresh water with nutient promoting plant growth this simple underlying factor is that anything that promotes good plant growth is gonna deter algae growth.... playing with the flow in the water with this in mind, might be exciting. we could like intentionally promote algae growth over a rock structure alone. In my experience, flow has always helped reduce algae growth. Also plants close to the substrate loose the detroitis settling on them. love your videos bro keep em rolling. great fan love the passion

Hey there! Great video! Can you adress a question I have? I have my intake on the left back corner and the outflow on the right back corner, aiming on a 45 degree angle. I have placed my CO2 diffuser underneath the outflow but for some reason, I feel that the plants on the left side seem like they're not getting enough CO2. Do you think that placing a wavemaker on the intake side would improve the CO2 distribution across the aquarium? Thanks a lot, cheers from Portugal!

I'm using a power head to blow CO2 around, from a diffuser. I did not like the turbidity with an inline diffuser, so I'm trying to downsize with a diffuser. I love the tank and great info. Thank you for sharing. I wonder if more targeting of ferts being delivered into the tank would be of any use? Similar to what they do to feed certain corals where you turn off the filter or water motion until the feeding settles?

I don't think it has to be that complicated. The ferts are dissolved in the water, so the flow should suffice.

Great video, the new setup looks great, but I definitely miss the old one! Was one of my main inspirations for when I finally setup a high tech tank in a month or so here. Your channel has been my favorite for trusted info on quality planted tanks as well. Keep up the good work! Was just wondering too, what do use to remineralize your RO water for GH/KH??
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Grohmann That tank was pretty sweet, but just wait! This tank is not even close to being mature. We will all see how it transforms. I use a DIY solution of potassium bicarbonate for the buffer, which I show you how to make in my 10 quick tips series. I believe in episode 4. Either way, it is the first tip in the video so it should be easy to find. You add the buffer to the total water replaced per week at a water change, and not the total tank volume. Right now for the GH I am using AquaVitro Mineralize. But you don't need to buy AquaVitro. You can just get the dry fertilizer mix called "the ultimate GH booster" off of green leaf aquarium's website or other plant fertilizer sites. Thanks for watching man.
@PokeJag586
@PokeJag586 8 жыл бұрын
+ADU Aquascaping Thanks for the info. So, if you are using potassium bicarb to raise KH, does it affect your fert dosing as well? I was planning on going by the EI method, but I know one of the ferts I would be adding would be mainly for Potassium (I think), so in theory, I could add less of that?
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Grohmann Yeah it will add a good amount of potassium, but I still dose KNO3 at moderate levels, because I don't want too much alkalinity in the water. I keep my alkalinity "KH" around 3. Between 3-6 is recommend for most plants. In the video I mention how much potassium the dose will add...

Very good video, I love how figurative this is. I know you said there was TWO MAIN ways people were getting flow in their tanks, but I'm wondering if mine is ok? I have the intake and out in the same corner, and my power head right under the filter output. The main reason it's like that is because I don't really like seeing my powerheads and the plants/driftwood hides it in these corners..
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 8 жыл бұрын
+DViau Aquaria thanks for watching, that may still create a large circle that goes around the entire tank if the outtake and powerhead are aimed in the same general direction. It could even be creating to half circles that go in opposite directions if you have them aimed at 45 degrees into the center of the tank. All that matters is reducing dead spots in the tank, so just do the method that has the least amount of dead spots. It can really be any configuration that you need for your specific tank. I was just getting people started with some ideas. And you can check the direction of flow by mixing in some small flake food and watching where it goes etc...

Great info! I'm a planted tank rookie myself. After years of fish keeping, I decided to start a small 10g planted tank and if things go well, I will transfer what I've learned to my 75g. Had a HOB Biowheel running which was creating too much surface agitation imo. Just put in a submersible filter with a spray bar. I also placed it very close to my co2 diffuser so a lot of the larger bubbles are sucked into the filter, broken up and dispersed thru the tank. We will see how it goes. Hope it works out.

@ADUAquascaping

+chemicalgabe I just cut the tank into thirds and placed on those spots, but a tad to the right of each measurement, so left side is at 10.5" in, and right side is at 25.5". I have the lights higher than the bracket holes on the hanging arm go, but the two screws seem to hold the arm against the bracket even though the screws aren't in the arm holes. So, I have mine at around 25" from the substrate, using the 110 degree lenses and the output is at around 55% of total output.

yeah some may get caught in it. It does happen sometimes. You can maybe try covering it with something, mesh, or screen, but you may need to switch to a powerhead with a prefilter screen to keep them out. It is a possibility. Try it out and if some die in there just modify it with some panty hose or something.

Hey Dave. Just wanted some advice or thoughts on this. I've got a 50G low tech planted tank. would you still recommend X20 flow/circulation on a tank this size, coz it seems excessive. i was thinking about buying a wave maker/circulation pump for detritus as you mentioned and dead spots in the tank to circulate the water. Any brands you could recommend..? and also can you recommend any bulk Carbon Filter Pads/coarse foam pads or white polishing for an EHEIM 2217 Canister Filter that are cheap etc..? Cheerio.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 7 жыл бұрын
It really isn't too much. It seems like it is, but it works well. Can depend on fish type. some fish may not like higher flow. I use Koralia wavemakers to help with circulation. In my 10 quick tips video, I believe either episode 4 or 5 I recommend a coarse sponge you can buy in bulk, and it is aquarium safe. The link is still active and you can buy it from the website. It is one of the tips in the video, I think it is episode 4. As far as micron foam I don't really have a specific favorite or recommendation. Just whatever is cheapest at that point. Can probably find many different brands on Ebay or Amazon that will work. Just cut them up to the shape that you need.

Also i've read that if you have sufficient filter filtration (min 4X) on a low tech that it isn't necessary to attach a wave maker, in saying that i was going to buy either a Koralia or Sun Sun, position it in a corner at the bottom of the tank just purely to move or push the water towards the filter inlet.

Wouldn't it be possible in a more advanced Tank Set-up to use Air tubes which you bury in your set up and allow it to peek out of the soil left and right to create waterflow at odd spots? This way, be capable of doing set ups such as under-water caves that may have dead zones of flow in normal case. Basically, you split the flow out toward Air tubes from your potential external filter. Using a check valve to limit the pressure so you have most of the flow still within the tank in the normal manner while the air tubes help working out potential dead zones in the scape?
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 8 жыл бұрын
+Helveteshit yeah that would work out. That is really the last frontier with aquascaping, doing a cave that is lit up with plants. Would have to possibly use underwater lights as well. Good thinking, and a good project. As far as a regular tank goes wavemakers and filters are sufficient because as velocity is increased so is turbulence, which distributes the water and increases the volume of the water circulation.

I have a small aquarium with length 16 inch , breadth 8 inch and height 8 inch. The water is getting cloudy with in 2 days. so i have placed a internal filter in it . but the problem is as the aquarium is small the filter is attracting or pulling the fish too along with water . so the fish can not swim freely. The filter also creating waves . So what should i do? does wave harm or irritate the fish?

You could try adding more filter media to the filter baskets to slow down the flow. This can help. Get more sponge and filter floss and put it in the filter to slow the flow down.

@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 7 жыл бұрын
For such a tall tank you definitely need CO2, so that is a good start! It will help free up needed energy to trap all available light, which will be lower at the substrate on such a tall aquarium. I would go with a Finnex Ray II- higher output, and possibly a Finnex planted+. Both of them on top will most likely be needed. They are not as expensive and get the job done. You can get the newer planted+ model with built in timer, but would save even more on the classic model. Both are very simple and can be connected to timers, and they get the job done. And both combined together would make for better color rendering.

+Eric Maher I just prefer to create some agitation at the surface with the filter or wavemaker for oxygen levels. I like Koralia wavemakers, and you may not want too much O2 in your substrate if that is the case. Bacteria beds usually behave better with lower O2.

+bigtroublenj If you find the tank health and growth of the plants satisfactory than you don't, but I have found, along with other aquascapers, that having at least 5x the total volume per hour turnover to 10x the total volume per hour turnover works really well. That filter is only rated at 264gph, and Eheims are known for having low flow. My API Filstar on my 40 gallon is doing 250-300, plus I have the wavemaker at 425gph. The Eheim. skimmer only does 80 gph. Another reason why I say 5x to 10x is because of fish type as well. Some fish don't want tons of flow, and some do.

@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 2 жыл бұрын
Is the Oase filter 600 liters per hour or 600 gallons per hour of filtration? If it's rated for 50-100 gallon aquariums you will be fine. If you want optimized circulation, then we usually aim for 10 times the total aquarium volume in gallons per hour. So 500 gallons per hour with a 50 gallon tank. Some of the small Koralia wavemakers do 425 GPH, so you can get one of these to help out. This is total circulation not filtration. But with your filtration and a wavemaker you would definitely be at or above 10x the water volume per hour in total circulation.

@@ADUAquascaping I believe it is 600litres ph and my tank is 180litres so how does that work out, do I need even more? Edit that's filtration sorry, the flow is 1250 lph
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 2 жыл бұрын
@@Boss-zo4lw You're at 3.33 times more with the filter. So you will want a wavemaker. Koralia nano wavemaker moves 425 gallons per hour or 1600 liters per hour. It's OK to have a bit more. I run some aquariums at 20x the volume in circulation per hour. It just helps keep the water crystal clear and pick up extra detritus. And if you point the wavemaker towards the surface can help to increase oxygen, which then helps the bacteria in the filter and the fish.

@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 2 жыл бұрын
Well if it is doing 600 liters per hour it is large enough for filtration. I am talking about total aquarium water circulation per hour. So this is filtration and then any power heads or wavemakers. This will usually make the tank a lot cleaner depending on your setup. Say you have a large scape with a lot of driftwood and plants. Then you would definitely want 10x-20x.

"don't be too eager to tell others their faults". Once you fully understand the rules behind why it works, you can demo people not using it. E.g., Using H2O2 or Excel to get rid of algae, once you understand why it works, you can demo a clean tank without using them at all. There are tons of examples in nature or show tanks in zoos have little or none water flows at all, plants grow very well. The reason we need a 10x/5x gph flow because flow can distribute nutrients very well to every plants is weak. Without flow, water molecules can do that for us very well. Water flow can help BBA grow once a tank/filter has too much organic waste. More maintenance work, more cost.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 8 жыл бұрын
+ccloop It is true you could balance the BOD in a tank and have low flow, but for most people if you increase flow you increase O2 into the filter, which helps the bacteria of course break down the organics more efficiently, and at the same time is helping to get all of the detritus into the filter and off of the plant leaves. It is true that type of filter scenario can cause eutrophication and hypoxia if your filter is inefficient, but if you have higher flow with ample amounts of media it helps to reduce these issues. Small aquariums with super dense plant mass and potential for high organic decay are not that great at self regulating, especially during the initial 4-8 weeks. I have found the higher the flow, with ample amounts of media the less risk there is of nutrient contamination, sludge build up etc... Bacteria work better, which reduces the organic contamination, and the higher flow provides more O2 for the system.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 8 жыл бұрын
+ccloop Also, under water there is a water boundary of up to 0.5 mm thick that can limit nutrient contact with plant leaves, turbulence helps to break through this water tension boundary, which is a unique situation for aquatic plants.

If you look at flow rates for large rivers that many our freshwater fish and plants come from like the Amazon or Congo- you see flow rates of around 2-6 miles an hour (higher in the wet season). If you were to translate this to flow in a 75 gallon tank it would read like this at 2mph : 1mile = 5280 feet. 2mph = 10560ft/hr or 2.93 ft/second. 2.93ft/4ft = .725. So you need to move 72.5% of the water volume per second. 75*.725 = 54.375 gallons/second OR 54.375*60 = 3262.5 gallons/minute OR 3262.5*60=195,750 GPH. 195,750 GPH would be the low end of the Amazon river in dry season for a 75 gallon tank. Let that sink in for a bit. That would be 2,610x turnover. It's really interesting how this is hardly discussed in the freshwater community. It seems to lag behind the marine community by about 20 years. Most freshwater aquarists keep their fish in essentially stagnant or bog-like conditions.

+OriginalMindTrick No, low flow is an outdated idea in most planted tanks. Unless you are really trying to do a Walstad El Natural tank, and even then I would add flow. Flow is found in nature and plants prefer flow. In my low tech 10 gallon tank I used a SunSun 603 canister, which is rated at 106gph, probably a little lower in reality, but that is still close to 10x the total volume of the tank per hour.
