Thank you so much for your video. It's so relieving to hear you validate what I feel. I just took a beginners swim class and the instructor was not sensitive at all to my fear of the water. He expected students at the end of wk 1 (1 hr class) to do an elementary backstroke, when I was still uncomfortable even being in water that was up to my neck! I feel like I am hyperventilating with the water that high. I felt defeated at the end of the class, and since disenrolled. But I am still determined to learn how to swim, & plan to take another class at another location in Jan 2017. I'm going to do what you said to become less afraid. Thanks again.

Neenja7 it happened to me when instructor in the 3rd lesson asked me to swim breast stroke! As an anesthesiologist I can pick when someone is mentally thick and she is! I have decided to learn the strokes in our local leisure centre pool with a life jacket and take it from there. Period.

I don't have a fear of water except when I can't feel the ground below me. I just panic. This is heart breaking I missed a lot of family time when we had to go in a boat trip to swim in deep blue . I stayed in the boat and each time they tell me try to join. I just have accelerated heart beating and shortness of breath and all the scenarios of drowning that anyone could imagine. just by thinking about even trying let alone actually stepping in. Why am I going through this ???? I have no idea or even recalling of certain incidents !!!!! But I really feel bad and disappointed with myself :'(

engie elbialy It is normal to feel fearful in deep water if you don't know what to do and if you've had little opportunity to practice! Best to take some lessons with an instructor who specializes in teaching adults to swim. A good instructor will walk you through the steps of becoming familiar with deep water, how to swim and tread or float and how to manoeuvre back to where you can touch or exit the water.

Great goal! The sensations you are feeling when putting your ears or nose will eventually lessen. Be sure to practice with a spotter!

Thanks for your comment! Yes, three year olds can find it easy to learn to swim! Not always so for adults. Keep it up and find a really good instructor near you for some added support!

Very helpful points, thanks! How do I explain to a friend how to apply that little pressure between the palate and the nose, which will help them hold their breath? And do you have any "eureka" thing to say to someone to help them float? PS I like the family atmosphere in the video. :)

For breath holding, I have my students hold their breath and inflate their cheeks to create the pressure. You can also advise them to also gently press the tip of the tongue on the upper palette. This will work for most students. Always teach your students how to clear their nose of water.
