Adult with Autism

Friendship is hard, especially when you have Autism. It is something I have struggled with more than been successful at, but I also believe it is due to my submissive approach by wanting to make sure everyone is okay all the time instead of putting my needs forward. Now that's changed, so did the friendships along the way.

That was the same for me through school. I had people I hung out with, but rarely saw them outside of school, and we never kept in touch once we left. Odd now I think about it!

Sorry about the loss of your friend. Besides my wife who has been my partner for about 28 years. (I call that a friend. Just don't know how she's put up with me though.) I have one friend. He is completely selfless. He would rather ask me what he could do for me, than to ask me to do something for him. But we both know we can count on each other. I was petrified during the whole Covid thing he would get sick. He has C.O.P.D. so i was worried if he got Covid he would never survive it. But i am fortunate to say we've made it this far. We are fully vaccinated and got to "hug each other's neck" (as we like to say) a couple of weeks ago. And i heard him tell his Mom "this is my best buddy right here." And i can say i feel the same about him.

That's really nice. Sometimes we have pieces missing within ourselves we didn't know were missing, until someone completes it for us without knowing. Real friends certainly do that.

Paul cool video. I agree with your definition of friendship. I have a few life long friends that we all put each other before ourselves. We are there for each other and have fun together. I laughed when you said you take the back seat! That is me. I am the odd one out as it were yet everyone likes my quirks. Its strange that I only have one friend from work. I have been there 34 years and in my current position for 20 years. Most people I work with I am not interested in knowing on any deep level. Many are very nice, but not interested in a friendship. Also I don’t get what people are into these days. Paul thanks for posting, its one of my favorite shows🤣. I really appreciate your honesty. I don’t think there is any other channel like yours. Keep smiling!

Haha, thanks Bryan. I often wonder what would happen if there were a few of us who needed to get in a car...the backseats would get crowded pretty quickly! Then we'd be complaining out personal space felt invaded!!

I've only ever have one friend at a time...a special person, like a special interest. It often lasts for many years, but in the end they always die. Brain tumor, accidental overdose, falling down stairs, intentional suicide. I think because I'm an oddball, I attract/am drawn to other oddballs who have similar struggles in life, and whose life expectancy, therefore, is shorter than the norm. I miss having a friend. The world shutting down sure didn't help matters. This current level of isolation doesn't suit me well, but friendship can't be forced. In the meantime, I avoid the void with your videos. Our bit of interaction lights a spark that keeps me going. Thank you. 💙

Interesting you saying you have one friend at a time, I think I do. Even with existing friendships, they are not connected. They wouldn't know who each other was if you sat them at a table together. I'm terrible though, I like the idea more than the event. So I like to see friends but on the day, it's the last thing I want to do. Not sure why as I like them, but everything involved with seeing them is what I dislike. Leaving my house, socialising, public space etc.

@@AdultwithAutism My last friend had schizoaffective disorder. He was brilliant and talented and hilarious and a lot of people loved him and vied for his attention. He trusted me enough to let me into his reality behind the mask. It was dark and frightening and painful to see. And there was nothing I could do to make it better. But I could be there with him and we didn't have to do anything or go anywhere. We could just...be. Alone together. Kinda perfect. He used to call me autistic before I knew what that meant, and I thought he was just joking or making fun of me, but now I know he knew. He saw behind my mask, too.

I get motion sickness and ill still sit in the back of the car. Any how. I tell people i meet who seem to want to be my friend. That i dont ahve friends. my brain only says family or yoir nothing to me. But im not close to my blood family. Family is people who touch my heart and now i got your back. And no one really knows this but me. I know whos in my family. Theres a couple of people who know where they stand to me. We never talk, but whe we do its awesome. Only started falling asleep because its nearly 2am.😅

Friendship test ~ Sat. night phone call from "friend" asking for ride to emergency room, a good friend says, "sure I will be there in five minutes", or my response "you mean sit in a very noisy crowded room W florescent lights sick people coughing then wait hours to fix you bloody hand ! Forget it mate!!" Oh well few friends have I, yet a price willingly paid this luxury of solitude uninterrupted!!

Haha, I'd drop them off, not keep them company. I'm not a doctor and my bum in a seat could be for someone who needs it. Plus, how expensive is it to park at a hospital these days! Friends should be more careful 😂
