I love the detail of him first fighting mounted with the bow, not only is the movement well done, but that's how samurai first fought in ancient times.

Didn't they also favor using a spear on the horses Because it gave them greater range and only used katanas as a last resort

@@solidcricket that was when the battle was pretty much over for the beetle drones. Also Jack says “No. There is no escape...” then goes crazy with massacring them

Damn, I was hoping to see that slow motion part of this where he's covered in motor oil and screams at the top of his lungs and goes beserek. This was the definitive cartoon of my childhood!

It's almost feels like the beetles were supposed to be living beigns instead of robots, seeing how Jack is killing them with his katana.

If you want to see that you have to watch either the series finale, or start watching Primal. Primal is made in the same art style by the same legendary Genndy Tartakovsky.

@@OrcistCleaver agree plot wise it was a good decision to remind the audience jack has morales and is the hero all his fights were either self defense bounty hunters or he wanted to help some enslaved randoms side quest which were my fav and then there thunder dome

As ben said it was their way around censorship to actually let Jack use the sword. The end of this fight has one of the drones demonstrate recognizable fear too and Jack recognizing it so you're right on the money

What i most love about is how accurate the fighting tactics are because it's actually how ancient samurai would fight like the Mongols with mounted archery and using his sword as a final backup weapon

I'm 31, and that may seem old.... but I was there when this was fresh. I was 11, or 12 when this came out. There is no words that can articulate how my young body felt watching this episode. It shows not the oil blood on his face, but the rage in his heart here.

I remember seeing him for the first time in the commercials and thinking it looked dumb until I saw them so the behind the scenes videos before the first episode aired and from then on I was hooked. It's been over 20 years and this show is still awe inspiring

Imagine Jack and Ashi at Helms' Deep or even Minas Tirith. "Forth Eorlingas!" Theoden leads the charge out of the keep into the Hornburg, slashing away at the Uruk-hai as they go. Gimli blows the horn, Without pause, they storm out of the gate and down the Causeway only to see the enemies being decimated by Jack and Ashi. All of Theoden and the fellowship's grim determination to face them have been halted since those two finished them. All including Gandalf looked disappointed to see the people approaching those two in gratitude.

That mount was pretty cool. It could definitely hold it's own against the beetles if it tried but you can see it shrink away and recoil-- And it's attacks mostly seemed defensive.

When you watch shows like Samurai Jack you realize that most of the other action cartoons that came before it had very little action. The censors are to blame but it really ruins viewings of classic TMNT, He-man, and Thunder Cats when you realize that there was almost never any sword stabs or slices and that it was mostly a glorified laser gun.

There was also the fact that animation back than was recovering from the 60s and 70s. Animation back than had a shoestring budget which was why they couldn't do alot

Well TMNT 1987 did make the footsoldiers robots but they still did´t use that. Mostly they battled Shredder and the others who were of flesh or else TMNT is a possible candidate to use this trick.

I still remember here in India ,there used to be a cartoon network show name *Cartoon premiere* where they show us 1st pilot episode(basially used to be 1 hour long) and we had to sms that whether we want the following show as regular . The moment i saw this fight i knew i had to sms and lose all my money even if it means getting grounded for a month😂

@@alinastanescu4430 oh yes we did it took them a couple of month, ( billy and mandy had the most vote so it was the first preference) . But Samurai Jack is one of the very few shows who's all season from 1 to 4 were telecasted in india🔥

I realized the reason Jack struggled at firstwas cause he wore heavy armor and a samurai’s defining trait is speed

Except samurai wore armor in battle historically. Their armor is actually a lot lighter than European plate armor as well but at the cost of it being way more fragile since it's woven together with string instead of being riveted.

Haven't seen a full episode for a long time, but I recall a point when there were only a few beetle drones left and just after he brutally destroyed a bunch of them at once, the last few actually take a step back and Jack says something along the lines of "No, there is no escape." and finishes off the last of them in epic, swift succession.

I doubt they care, assuming they even know about it. The Japanese entertainment industry has no problem making wildly outlandish depictions of their Samurai, and they especially like making wildly outlandish depictions of European knights. So it goes both ways...

I remember Jack had more personality in the original series and then Season 5 came with the 50 year bullshit storyline and made him a bumbling idiotic Simp who only likes "Ashi".

Tone it down hoss, there's already plenty of salt on the internet. If you don't like season 5 just don't consider it canon. As far as I'm concerned the Alien series ended with the second one, and ditto for Terminator
