Sorry if the audio seems a bit off in this one. I had to balance it WAAYYY down. I was too excited and was talking too loudly into the mic so the levels were all jacked.

And yep, thats a level up moment. I really need to overhaul my Elite Dangerous config. That game wants a SHIT TON of bindings, and I figured out a way to do all of them on a touch pad, by using the dpad mode to apply layers like you are only different; 4x16 button touch menus all on a single pad = 64 bindings. I havent really implemented it yet though, and now this is making me realize what I hadnt before; using the method to cram a ton of axis of control onto the pad. Great stuff man!

I've been loving Action Layers since your other vid on it. I've been using them a lot in MMORPGs like Black Desert Online. Thanks again for your vids. When I go into action layer for extra buttons I add a second activator for each button that removes the current action layer on button release. So I set up the action layer with the action layer button (which could also be another button and is piggybacking on it via second or whatever activator if I just use Hold for action layer), then I press the extra buttons and when I release I'm back to default buttons. So many buttons!!! So good. With I use the Hold Action Layer method I even add in Touch menu to the party. Even more buttons!

Awesome video. I kind of abandoned the steam controller for awhile in favour of keyboard and mouse but this makes me want to go back to the Light side. Might mess around with this on the weekend. Thx.

Ooooooh. I'm already brainstorming how this can be abused. For analog joystick input, I imagine you would have the default layer be a D-pad (no overlap) with all four directions leading to Action Layers, the ones that don't have an Outer Ring Binding get their own shared layer. And then in the Action Layer, you just use a joystick. Once you leave your quadrant, the binding for the outer layer should change.

this is pretty cool. I was already using layers in a profile i am building - but was thinking about how to do q and e (wasd are currently on the joy) . I was actually taking a break, hunting around for vdf parsers so i could write something to print out a human-readable profile and i stumbled accross this vid. I'll be sure to take a look at some of your other SC guides. Good work.

Nice find! If my gaming PC wasn't out of commission i'd do some experimenting with this as it's just the hack-around i was looking for. Really wish Valve would replace "outer edge" with some form of custom "banding", that can achieve this same effect.

Just realised this is great for a w+outer ring for a sprint when you click forward, while clicking anywhere else results in crouching in a much nicer dead zone.

intetresting... so, could u have 4 inputs on the outer edge, and 4 on the inner area? basically 2 buttonpads on 1 touchpad is what im interested in.

egg can you help me please i know you could managed to figure this out but its done me. I'm trying to play borderlands 2 i use inverted controls in steam overlay with my ps4 controller using the gyro ,Now whats happening is i want gyro always on but for some strange reason the game reverses the y axis (up down) when i'm hp firing it's fine, but when i pull the left trigger in it's reversing my aim .So i need to create an action set where the gyro is set to inverted from hip fire / main game when i pull in left trigger normally i could do that but not with left trigger i just can't get it working . i know you don;t do ps4 stuff but it would be the same using the steam controller ,? I have this problem all the time arma 3 pubg they all do it but thats in the games menu it messes thing up using inverted gyro and i always sort them but not like this game as its not as easier fix thanks

You think this could be used to have walk, jog, and sprint on the left pad? Walk being inner ring binding, jog being most of the pad, then sprint be the outer edge?

nope, tried it, when I try to switch from W to AW to A it just stops, either it's impossible to make work good or I'm stupid can't see a way to do so we definitely do need tap bindings for directional pads!!! That way we could make exit from action layer by touch release so this would work perfectly

Is there any way to do this with the mouse trackpad setting? Basically I want to aim with the right pad but I want a ring of touch-based "buttons" around the outside. There's no outer ring mode for mouse-like trackpad though so I'm at a loss.

Why do you have to put it so that the rolls are on separate action layers? Isn't it possible to have them on just one layer?

I originally had them both on the same layer but it wasn't working out how I wanted. It's always a game specific thing and this isn't the ONLY way to do it, it's more about considering all the possibilities we have in the configurator.

Could you do the same with Joystick Move by placing that same DPad layout as it's own Action Layer... then activate that layer via an outer ring binding on the base Joystick Move Layer perhaps? Do the order of those words make sense? It seemed right when I thought it but now that I look back on what I wrote I don't understand any of it. Oh great... the Steam Controller has broken my brain. ...not again.

It made sense and yeah, you can do this on left pad. Just set the outer edge binding to take up the whole pad and set it as Release Press to go back to the default layer that will have the dpad taps.

For my particular set up, yes, that's correct. You could have the edge be both if you wanted though.

have you ever felt any input lag while playing with steam controller? and if so, do you have any solution? does upgrading cpu help?

I haven't. Do you have troubles with Big Picture Overlay in general? If so you can have it run at a lower resolution.

ExistentialEgg thanks for the reply. It could be me just being sensitive, but I've felt that steam controller was less responsive than keyboard&mouse, so I couldn't used to play fps kind of game with this. maybe I didnt play enough to used to it, or somethimg else. 1 more question, do you play fps with this frequently?

Try using it wired instead of wireless, I started playing wired, and cant go back to playing wireless; it seems less responsive wireless. I play Battlefield 1 almost every day with a steam controller and do pretty well.

Yes! I found it a couple of hours ago, and after troubleshooting the launcher issues I got it working.. but the flight controls have a pretty big learning curve, I'm having a LOT of trouble taking off and landing. I haven't figured out how to elevate and strafe yet. Took me an hour to get flying normally (normal is not spinning in circles and smashing anything that's near LOL. Thanks for going through this though, there's definitely a LOT of patience required, more than I have. Cheers.

I don't know about this one, seams a bit over complicated. I think it would get messy during combat. If it works for you then cool. May have a mess around with this sort of thing in elite dangerous.
