ADVANCED CONDITIONALS - ALTERNATIVES TO 'IF' || CONTRACTIONS || MIXED CONDITIONAL. British English teacher. British accent.
Advanced conditionals lesson looking at;
Alternatives to 'if' 0:50
Contractions 4:46
Mixed conditional 7:35
You need to know the conditionals to be able to improve your English level in general but specifically to speak more fluently as well as improve your listening comprehension. Furthermore, many exams test students on the conditionals so you need to be prepared.
In this video, I continue on from my previous lesson on the basics of the five conditionals in English and go deeper into the grammar so you have a comprehensive understanding of all areas of the conditionals.
I hope you find the video useful!

How to formulate present perfect sentences to conditional sentences? For example.... Situation one ... (1)I have just eaten so, I can't go out with you for dinner....how to formulate this present perfect sentense(I have just eaten) If I did not eat, I would go out with you for dinner. Or If I had not eaten, I would go out with you for dinner. Any teacher has never discribed about how to convert conditional from present perfect....they always discuss about past situation but what about recent past which has connection with present....can we use second conditional or we have to use past perfect in those types of situations....please guide about recent past which has connection with present.....second situation (2)He has killed his wife so police will arrest him. If he did not kill(or had not killed)his wife, police would not arrest him. Situation three... (3)He has killed his wife so Police has arrested him. If did not kill( or had not killed) his wife, Police would not have arrested him. As every one says Second conditional is used for 'present' and 'future'.....dose the 'present' mean 'present simple' or' present perfect'? Third conditional used for past tense.does it mean 'past simple' and 'resent past(present perfect)?... Please guide me I am very eager to know your answer.....
@tothepointenglishwithben.
@tothepointenglishwithben. 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions Pankaj. The present perfect is considered a 'past' verb tense and follows the same rules in conditional sentences as the past simple. The second conditional is used for the present simple and continuous NOT the present perfect. So, we use the 3rd and mixed conditionals for present perfect sentences. The correct sentences using your examples are; 1. If I had not eaten, I would go out with you for dinner 2. If he hadn't killed his wife, the police wouldn't arrest him. 3. If he hadn't killed his wife, the police wouldn't have arrested him. Does that clarify it for you?

@@tothepointenglishwithben. Sir I am sorry but I can not hold myself to ask one more question. one more which is not relevant to the conditional. Every one says that past simple is complite past which has no connection with present but in real life many situations arise which have connection with present even if they are past simple....for example Supposing(context)....I go to laundry shop to pay the last month laundry bill.we give money to laundry man but he does not accept it and says one of two following statements (1)Your father has paid the bill so you don't have to pay it.(here 'has paid the bill' is present perfect which has connection with present that's why I don't have to pay the bill) (2)Your father paid the bill yesterday so you don't have to pay it. Here 'paid the bill yesterday' is complited action which does have connection with the present that's why I don't have to pay the bill now. But grammer say past simple is complited action which has no connection with present.....according to me 'past simple is complited action it does have connection with present it depends on context what we want to convey the masaage.....please guide me.' two more example.... (3)who broke this glass?(broken glass is still here.some connection with past action and present result.) (4)why did you break this glass? Here I am not talking about distanct past here I am talking about recent past. if we say (5)who has broken this glass ? (6)why have you broken this glass? It sounds odd to me....it seems like formal.but here we want to expresss our enger and anger can't not be shown by formal speaking.....what's your view....please let me know....
@tothepointenglishwithben.
@tothepointenglishwithben. 3 жыл бұрын
We can't use the present perfect when the sentence includes a past time reference (yesterday, last year, in 2008, 5 minutes ago) because the time is considered completed. That's why your example 2 is correct. Regarding examples 3, 4, 5, and 6... although the action is recent, the verb 'to break' refers to an action which was completed in the past and the speaker is emphasising the fact that it is completed. As you said, it's not wrong to say 'who has broken the glass' but it's not common simply because of the nature of the verb.

You come across as a great teacher...so I'm in no way attacking you. I wouldn't. I've also taught English to overseas students for many years; and the language has, in my humble opinion, many fanciful and unnecessary aspects to it [I appreciate other languages do too but perhaps not as many as English? Especially when it comes to the tenses!]. Personally, I didn't go down your very well explained and illustrated path of alternatives to 'if'. Absolute nonsense in my opinion. 'I'll lend you the money IF (heavily stressed by the speaker) you pay me back before Xmas' is no weaker than 'on condition that', for me. And again: 'supposing you won the Lottery...' to me has no more emphasis than 'if you...'. Sorry, just an opinion and one that influenced my disinterest in thinking this had to be covered in class. As another way of saying the same thing, for variety, perhaps, but not because it gives more emphasis to the meaning.
