The purpose of this video is to show you how to take your unfinished edges and heels and refinish them to produce a highly polished dress edge and heel.
Products used in this video:
Sandpaper (from a local hardware store)
Saphir Teinture Francaise Dye
www.kirbyallison.com/saphir-t...
Saphir Pate De Luxe Wax (Neutral) Polish
www.kirbyallison.com/saphir-w...
Medium Saphir Dauber
www.kirbyallison.com/medium-s...
Small Saphir Welt Brush
www.kirbyallison.com/small-sa...
Step 1 (01:44): Smooth Edges Using Fine Sandpaper (Optional step)
Anywhere you see an uneven surface, sand it down. We recommend using an 800 grit sandpaper for sanding down the edges of your shoe.
Step 2 (03:14): Recolor edges with edge dressing
Next, you will recolor the edges of your shoes using the Saphir Teinture Française Leather Dye. The dye is permanent, so make sure you avoid contact with the suede and pay special attention to the edges. Remove as much excess dye from the applicator, then take the applicator and brush it across the heel of your shoe. Allow the dye to dry for 3-5 minutes.
Step 3 (06:42): Apply Neutral Wax polish
Apply Saphir Pommadier neutral wax polish using a welt brush. The wax helps nourish and protect the welt stitching, in addition to shining the shoe. Apply on the edges of your shoe, try to get into the welt without getting any of the wax polish on the suede.
Step 4 (09:09): Buff off waxes with a clean dauber
Using brisk, side-to-side motions, buff the edge and the heel of the shoe until you bring up the shine of the heels.

Thank you so much. I spent $200 on Thursday Cavalier boots and wore them in the winter without realizing how much it would damage the sole. I only got to wear them for two weeks before I realized there was significant damage to the sole edges. I’m gonna try this, pretty confident this will help. There is not much information on this topic so I really appreciate your very informative and well made video.

Thanks for this advanced guide to heel polishing. It contains all the steps that I knew I was missing but didn't know what they were. In my experience, most guys miss heel care 101, which is to take your shoes to the cobbler and get them reheeled already! I see lots of people walking around with worn down heels. Guys, that is bad for your back, plus it doesn't look good. Others notice! Also, don't forget Shoelaces 101 = if they look worn, replace them, and Shoelaces 102 = learn how to lace and tie your shoes. Thanks again Kirby for showing us "The Way of Shoes"!

I do the thinner sole edges with a cotton bud Kirby...you have much more control. I also go into the welt/vamp junction very carefully with a small stiff bristled artist's brush. I do actually use the mirror gloss and again use a small stiff bristled artist's brush to get into the welt if dealing with suede; if calf skin I use an old toothbrush. Nice job Kirby...always enjoy your vids!!!

Kirby, thank you for such great videos. When my cobbler sent me back my shoes perfectly half-soled (I picked out Vibram Ariel in rich brown), he not only did a fine job on the sole edge and heel dressing, he gave them a finishing touch using hot wax. They are glorious to look at. I would love to learn how to do this. Are you familiar with this technique, and is it something a regular person could learn? I’d love to hear any thoughts you have. I use black (also comes in white and brown, I believe) Heel and Sole edge by Kiwi. Looks great, adds good color and a little shine. For my brown boots with rubber edge and heel, I use brown polish. I've never tried wax polish but will try it. The shoes you have are quite worn on the edge, so it makes sense that you have used a dye.

Hello Kirby. I've watched or listened to maybe 15-20 hrs of your videos to get educated on shoe shining. So grateful for the specific details in each. If I ever work on a very high end leather … or something like eel skin or ostrich, which Saphir polish is a very very safe bet so I can ensure no discoloring or potential damage. It would really be painful to spot or ruin a really expensive pair of shoes seeing as though I'm an amateur. Thank you again for all the guidance which I know is only free because it comes from your passion. I have one passion. Jesus... but He needs no shining up. Thank you again for your help.

Kirby, I usually use the renovateur, then the cream polish and then wax polish, just like I do with the leather upper; is there something wrong with this, or would it be superior to use the Saphir Teinture Francaise Dye and the Saphir Pate De Luxe Wax Polish as in this video? Or does it depend on whether or not one has used sandpaper? Thank you for great guides

Hi Kirby, I hope that this finds you well. I’ve got a question for you regarding shoes and more specifically shoe repair/care. I own a pair of Crockett & Jones boots with a double sole(1 leather and 1 Dainite). I have a common problem where I wear through the toe of my sole much faster than any part of the sole (even faster than the heel). I’ve only had these boots for about 3 months and have only worn them moderately but the rubber soles have worn quite thin at the toe and the stitching between the rubber and leather outsoles has come apart. This also frequently happens with other shoes of mine which a single leather sole. I’m aware that as a preventative measure, metal toe plates can’t be installed to prevent this excessive wearing at the toe, but do you know any measures that can be taken once it has occurred? The rest of the soles of my shoes are in good shape and are nowhere close to needing replacement, so I’m hesitant to send it into you or any other certified repairer to replace the soles. I’m more so wondering if there are any less drastic and costly remedies that are more specific for the toe. Thanks for your time, Kirby.

If the welt is thick (like Allen Edmonds often are, or especially a storm welt), will it look weird to have the edge darker than the rest? I.e. to have it appear darker from the side than it does from the top? Asking because I have a pair with a very light-colored but hefty welt on which I'd consider this treatment but for this concern.
