Oh man. I remember the first time I went through an inaka "station" feeling so guilty that nobody was there. I mean I had paid for my ticket and everything but it just felt weird that nobody was there to make sure I wasn't doing anything malicious. Perhaps that speaks more volumes as to how I act as a person that how uncanny I felt "putting my ticket into an 'unattented' basket" like you mentioned. Great vid Dogen.

It's something that works in Japan but would be abused in the west. It's one of the things I love about Japan. Glad I got to live and work there for a year. I miss that mentality a lot.
@lars7935
@lars7935 4 жыл бұрын
@@rikvdmark One of the things I love about Germany is that there are no ticket barriers. You just go to the station and if you already have a ticket you just get on. Very convenient for commuter passes. Of course there are occasional checks and some people try to abuse the system (until they get caught and have to pay 60€ for a 2€ ticket). Not everywhere in the "west" is the US.

you talk about one train an hour in the inaka like it's a struggle but man i wish my not so inaka french village (pop. 2000 or something) had this kind of coverage. instead we have 3 buses in the morning and afternoon each and one at noon, can't leave or get back later than 6:30pm and if i need to get to the city it'll be over an hour (without counting waiting time) via the the town my bus serves if i take a train there, even longer longer (but much cheaper) if i take another bus. tl;dr i wish i had a once an hour train or bus where i live

Hey Dogen it has been a week since I first say this video, it was the first of yours I saw and man I laughed till I cried! Since then I have checked out your other funny videos and been touched by the deeper more philosophical videos. But the ones that has really gotten me is your series on Japanese Phonetics, it's opened my eyes a lot and now I understand why at times some people say my Japanese sounds so natural and other times people have no idea what I'm saying haha. With my goal being to speak like a native I want to thank you for giving us such a clear pathway to achieving it. I'm definitely going to keep going until my ability is at that level and you've given me extra motivation. I'll join your Patreon soon and keep it up with the great videos :D

The inaka train skit hits close to home, lol. I think it really speaks to my crippling fear of authority that even going from un-staffed station to un-staffed station, I still always pay the correct fare, even when I could just hop on for free. Or do as my friend does and buy a ticket with the lowest fare at the main station and just keep riding till the un-staffed station.

That was my exact reaction getting the train from Kochi to Tosa-Yamada! "Where's the rest of the train? This is just a bus on tracks!" Also recently I finally registered as I was going to be in one place for longer than 2 weeks. They got me to sign up to the National Health Insurance scheme and gave me a bill. I was panicking that I'd get a fine for late payment as I had to wait until payday, only to be told when I went to pay a week after registering that I should come back and pay in another 2 weeks. Confusing.
