I got to employ a very instructive strategic idea against the Tal Caro-Kann.
I have been struggling against the variation, and, since my last tournament I've been preparing several ideas against it. I got to play one of them in my very first game against it!
The strategy behind the move Be7, instead of the more usual Ne7 or Nd7, is not really to pressure h4, but to play for a thematic exchange of the f5 bishop for the f3 knight in an attempt to attack the now undefended d4 pawn. And I got to play exactly that!
After the goal was accomplished, the conversion seemed trivial. It was really hard for my opponent to hold things together as, my light squared bishop, which I'd given up, was unnecessary for my plan, and the knight he'd traded for it was crucial to prevent me from doing what I wanted to do.
Study this pattern!
