Harmonising a melody with chords, inversions and cadences. Learn all about advanced music harmony, building and choosing chords and how to harmonise a melody. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8 music theory. When we look at music, we can think about it in two different ways. We can look at it from left to right - this is the melody and rhythm. Or, we can look at it from top to bottom - this is the harmony. Harmony is two or more notes played together at the same time. As soon as there is more than one pitch sounding at a time, you have harmony. The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. This music theory lesson will explain how chords are built, chord inversions, chord progressions and cadences, the different naming systems used to describe chords and most importantly how to choose chords to harmonise a melody. We'll start with a melody and go through the process of chord choices and what to think about when harmonising music.

This is brilliant teaching: clear and immediately practical. If only music theory was always taught like this. There's no need for gimmicks - just get the essential information across and let folk get on with applying it. I think many music teachers avoid theory because they fear their students will find it boring or irrelevant, but actually it's essential - there's no getting away from this stuff if you want to be a fully independent musician. Knowing theory is actually liberating because it gives our students a stronger musical voice. We owe them this!

I must say, this was absolutely, hands down the best explanation of how to add harmony I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been studying music production, engineering, and theory during my commutes going on 3+ years now. In this video, not only was the theory explained well, but it was accompanied by a step by step, practical example of how to really use it AND some additional angles of the different choices were looked at and played too. Thank you very much MM.

I feel like Randy Rhoads playing this on a Les Paul lol. great lesson, thanks I'm not one that can follow rules. but I've studied theory for a few years and now I can see the logic behind the rules, I accept them as I can see the theory they hold. I need to finish my descending eartraining before harmony this will help massively. I'm one of the eartraining slow coaches that has spent 1year just to get all notes any key ascending to 90%. It takes a while for a new root to sink in for me, what gets me is an ascending C-F followed by a B-F that last note still sounds like a 6th but the root sounds like a 7th and the notes over about C5 i find difficult. argh! Same with singing, If I am feeling a song like a Stevie Wonder or Beatles song I can sing pitch perfect If I know the song but I feel almost detached from the pitch of some songs and can't hear the correct incoming intervals and this shows in my singing(It must have something to do with pitch memory and I can't stand songs in the wrong key and the timbre is just as important as the pitch to me). I only picked a guitar up 3years ago and had no sense of pitch at the time so its an improvement but hey. anyway thanks for the lesson your teaching style really makes the lesson interesting and sink in.

I like this video. It brings a lot of the music theory concepts I've learn on youtube into full (working) view. It's given me a great understanding of how to better compose my music, as well as, prepared me to learn some re-harmonization techniques. I love the way he's organize and delivered the information and explained it in detail. I feel all music teachers (especially the ones on youtube) should cover music theory like this. That way people can see and understand how it works and how to apply it, as opposed to just throwing a music theory based concept at you and expecting you to understand it. Great video all the way around.

Think of the vii chord as a rootless V7 chord, which would resolve to the tonic chord (I). The lower and upper voice of the root position vii chord forms a tritone interval ("devil's interval") which creates instability or tension and would be resolved by contrary motion in half steps to the root and major third of the I chord. This is the same tritone in the dominant 7 chord (V7) which also causes tension and would resolve to the I chord to complete a cadence.
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 7 жыл бұрын
+Kenneth Pomarico Absolutely. We are often told in text books to avoid chord Vll but, as you say, it's the same as V7 without the root. Worth remembering that Vll often works best in first inversion.

Music MattersA course on Chromaticism or "alteration" in harmony will be really Nice...Chromaticism, how it works in harmony? "Modulation, modal interchange,modal borrowing, parallel key, tension...." all these words are "Mysterious" and not clear to me...How does the chromatic system evolve later?....A historical overview with some examples would be a wonderful thing....this part of harmony Still mysterious not just me, but for many...How can linking Bach Wagner Schonberg and others.....? Thank you again for your NICE work sir and have beautifull day...

I only skimmed through certain parts but this was basically my whole semester in music theory 1 but explained way more better. There were other things like part writing rules, bass doubling rules and more complex voice leading rules that weren’t cover (as said before, I only skimmed through it so you may have at one point) but I think that those are more niche topics that don’t need major light shed on them unless the profession calls for it. Will definitely be revisiting this video again and sharing it with my other peers. Thank you!
