I'm in my late 30's and been playing since my Early Teens. But this is part of my culture. I live it, breathe it, use it. This dude makes killer flutes. I got a flute in F from him and that thing sings! I got it in western cedar and I can play for a long time before it gets water logged. Couple years ago I bought a fancy flute for a crap ton of money from another site and it would get logged in minutes. Charlie on the other hand doesn't over charge for his flutes and makes EXCELLENT flutes. I'm going to buy another soon.

I love your videos! I have only been playing for a couple of weeks and found your site after buying an A-6 hole flute online. While my flute was pretty, several holes sounded awful, and hard to play. That's when I found your videos. After learning how flutes are made from one of your videos, I performed minor surgery, and a thorough oiling of the bore. Now my flute sounds so much better, and I enjoy playing it! I can play much longer before it gets soggy, too! Thank you for saving my flute!

Thank you for the beautiful playing you have shown me with the Native American flute. I have played the Quena for awhile and have learned many techniques. I love the sound of the 6 hole A flat. I am trying to save up for one plus the small amp. I work for the developmental disability. I want to play for them to give a sense of calm in their homes. Hello Charlie I heard the sound about nine months ago and today I own seven beautiful Native American style flutes and practice every single day!! I am always looking and listening to new ways to play different techniques. Today you taught me a new method (Advanced Techniques) that will be used in my daily practice. I am most grateful to all the individuals that take time to lend their way for those of us who are on the trail of learning!! I am a Boy Scout leader and this is where my focus has been directed with these sounds from the past. Please keep sharing.

I am really enjoying your videos. I've been looking at your flutes on you website and I notice that there is no recording of the eastern red cedar flute in the low tone. I would appreciate hearing one of them. I'm a tuba player and love the lower pitches. I believe the lone tone is the one for me. Also, is it available in your six hole style? I have played in concert with fine musicians, played in private with some of the world's most famous musicians, have recorded and sold many albums (some of which through giant chain stores) and love playing solo. I always hear this sound where they take the bottom hole I believe and make it fade downward, it's sooo beautiful. Also I hear where they make the note (sorry I dont know the terms) 'shriek' really high but it's not the 'im blowing way too hard' shriek, but a gorgeous sound. I have looked all over youtube to learn how to make these sounds and no one has done this. Can you possibly help with this? I have a flute in A minor, 6 hole but the 3rd is covered by a strip of leather. I've played it a few times and think I'm doing all right, but those two sounds I'd love to learn just can't be found anywhere. Probably because I don't know the correct name for it. I stilll cant figure out vibrato. I try to flutter my breath but it just doesn't work, esp for higher notes.

Curious question. How much aught one charge professionally? I was approached by someone wanting me to play for a documentary they are doing. Not looking to overcharge but also don't want to undercut myself either. Typically I just play for myself more as a spiritual meditation of sorts. I've been approached a few times now. Haven't decided either way as of yet. Was just hoping others might be able to give a ballpark idear. Much appreciate.

Your vids are interesting and informative. However, I am someone who has never played an instrument, never had any musical education, doesn't know the difference between a key, a note, an octave, a tone, a scale or any other musical term. It would be helpful to know something. I think a vid that would give some rudimentary education using the simple flute would be very helpful. It might cover such things as scale. Pentatonic.... penta means 5, 5 what. The most common scale seems to have 7 parts but it seems to be called diatonic, di means 2, 2 what that is the same as 7 what???? Pentatonic flute seems to have 5 holes which means 6 sounds but it is penta (5). Some flutes have 6 holes but are pentatonic. So what is the other hole used for? I guess 6 holes would make 7 sounds but it is still a pentatonic flute. But it seems like at least some 6 hole flutes play the regular 7 step "di" atonic scale. I am not even sure that what I am rambling on about here is correctly called scale. It seem like these flutes would be good tools to teach basic music and some basic music knowledge would be helpful for playing a basic flute so it would be a win win situation and a good source for making vids. All of the "questions" I posed here are real but I don't want answers here. This post will hopefully just give you some ideas for vids. I tried looking up some musical terms I would encounter on vids but got nowhere. Just try going to Wickpedia andi type in "music key". Bring a helmet because the sky is going to fall and someone without a musical education will have exactly the same question after they dig out from under the dump truck load of gibberish they get for an answer.

I read somewhere that with the pentatonic scale you can't play a wrong note. I'm not sure that's exactly accurate. But after learning the scale and if a little goof is made on a tune you can sometimes cover up the goof and make it sound as if you were just improvising.
