Thought the Movie made more sense if the Regent Force was actually a mining detachment. Their Peg weapons would act pretty well as Mining tools; shoot the pegs to embed them in rock and detonate once sufficent explosives are placed. The ridge goes up, exposing resources for strip mining. With the Drones, they would also work for recon, scouting out resource locations, and strip mining by using more precise techniques to clear the surface area and possibly for straight on mining. The Regents battle suits are more in line for a labor/high impact enviroment rather than protection against sustained firepower; basically the alien form of Hardhats and Work Vests. Their threat indicators look to work more like scanners for general threats; is this machinery malfunctioning in a way that might hurt people, is this architecture suitable or is it a structural hazard, is this worker safe or is experiencing workplace violence? Their hand held weapons make more sense for miners; why the hell do you want to have guns in a mine. You got your physical tools and wielding implements all in one package that is attached to your arm in case of disaster. The fact they had what looks like a ton of extra generators that can be deployed on land on hand for their plans screams more "Civilian Operations" rather than military. Their reluctance to fight unarmed people? "Dude, we are so screwed. We are so screwed?" "You think? WE PRETTY MUCH JUST INVADED ANOTHER PLANET!" "WE DIDN'T MEAN TOO! Damn it, why did Command want us to come here again?" "We were the only Regents in the area and they did not want any race to move in and woo the locals to their side." "WHY DO WE CARE- nevermind, probably something something political gronkshot. Throw up the asteroid shields, seal off the area while we try to not escalate the situation. Find something we can use to make contact with home, they managed to call from this location, it's why we chose this place as a landing area, FIND IT BEFORE WE GET OUR ASSES HUNG!" "What about the locals?" "Umm...hands off, try not to kill anyone, if need be cause distractions to keep them off our backs BUT KEEP IT TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM WE DO NOT NEED THE WHOLE HOOPLA IN EXPLAINING THEIR DEATHS ONTOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE! Use the Threat Scanner and Indicators to make sure we don't destroy anything meaningful. And for gods sake don't put Phil on any teams working ground side, you know how he gets when this sort of situation comes up. And get someone on translating the language for us." "The translators were on the communications ship" "Damn it, get anyone who is remotely experienced in this area on it. I don't care if their only experence is a 10 minute DIY language tutorial video, we need to make sure this does not blow up any more than it is."

We REALLY need a movie about the Regents point of view. The plot and the way you put their dialogues can give a really good script for a movie. Something even better than the original, maybe explaining the inconsistences in the original plot, and even teaching us something about the misundestandings in the real world. We need the Regents point of view. *NOW* Btw you deserve more likes.

*The sad thing about this story is* that we started firing after their horn shattered the glass on a destroyer's bridge, injuring some sailors which triggered the captain into firing. They only blasted _their_ horn in responce to _our_ horn; they were communicating back to us. Little did they know that their horn's blast would actually damage our ships. This whole ordeal could really have played out quite peacefully.

@@navaryn2938 At the start one of the 5 ships crash-lands, it turns out it was the communication ship, imagine this: you are going in a small fleet, 1 ship filled with scientists/translators, 1 filled with civilians, the rest military defense; you are going peacefully, but in a freak accident the ship with the scientists and translators crashes because of a drone passing by; all you are left with is military that is paranoid because their last home world was destroyed, the locals try to communicate with a horn, you attempt the same, except your horn hurts the locals and they fire, in their point of view you attacked but all you tried to do was communicate the same way they did; in your point of view you just escaped a war planet and now see every being outside of your race as a potential threat, they attack and your commanding officer immediately thinks "this is a hostile planet" and attacks every military settlement so there is no threats to the remains of your people, in a desperate attempt you try to look for the satellite that put the signal to your planet so you can find other survivors from your race to join you and maybe survive. You find a signal, it's one of the scientists! Except the locals have him kidnapped, what do you do? Go rescue him! The scientist in a desperate attempt to stop the violence tries to explain their situation, but in a bad stroke of luck you show a planet being destroyed to a guy who is xenophobic and his brother just died by the hands of your men (albeit in slef defense); so all he gets from the message the scientist is trying to give is "alien, war, planet destruction" and he assumes "damn, I got a bad feeling about this, we are going to need a new planet" which just throws more fuel into the fire. Then in an attempt to rescue the scientist you break into their base and leave, that's just seen as another threat. Now it's a full on firefight without any means of communicating with the other side because they are too busy fighting each other. You can see in multiple scenes most of the aliens were not hostile, just the bigger ones which I'm assuming are the military for them. At this point it's either fight for survival or suffer the same fate as our brothers from our previous home world, enslaved and slaughtered by another species.

You keep talking about an alien invasion. There was no alien invasion in Battleship. A small fleet of alien ships crash-land on Earth and lose their communication module. Their quest then is to phone home like Stephen Spielberg's E.T. They don't attack, they only defend themselves against a zealous military that for some reason thinks that any visitor from outer space has to be an enemy. The whole movie is structured like any Tohei Kaiju movie, down to the bit players being more interesting than the main protagonists.

There was actually a theory a while back the 'invasion' force was not actually there to invade. And that the Communications ship actually had an amabassor class on board. With them being killed the soldiers were left to kind of fend for themselves. Which they dealt with in a particular fashion. They didn't fire first, and when they did like you pointed out they stopped. They were trying to communicate with their homeworld, but all they really did was take out ships that were a threat... an air base that could serious threaten them and a highway which the actual purpose (when it was concieved) was to make an easy way to transport forces across the ground quickly. So the irony is that.... the aliens might not have been hostile... were just pricks.

The aliens clearly had hostile intentions, did you forget where he read the alien's mind and showed the invasion? Furthermore, in their initial encounter the aliens responded to every human action with a more aggressive response (i.e. human's sounded a horn, aliens responded with a violent shockwave), they were the ones who escalated things. They also made at least two unprovoked attacks, one on the military base (where the humans didn't even know they existed) and the second an attack on civilians (where they relentlessly attacked the freeway with a total disregard for casualties). Lastly when they arrived on the planet they didn't try to make contact at all, they just crash landed on the planet without regard for the mass destruction they caused. You're in total denial if you think the aliens were innocent

Personally I reckon the aliens are mining not military, those peg launchers look pretty good for blowing apart an asteroid, and it would also explain why only a small group was present. They likely saw humanity's massive signal while they were in the area and decided to check it out, not realising that their space thrusters couldn't get them into a stable orbit or back off the planet again, and that they needed to call a space tow truck but had accidentally lost the only vessel with a space CB Radio

Since almost everyone else is talking about the aliens, I will talk about the only partially realistic item in the film. The reactivation of the mothballed battleship. While I promise the live munitions are not on the vessel right now, an act of congress in the late 90s required the Iowa class ships to be left intact. The basic idea was that we may at times need a battleship, but not often enough to keep her on duty. Each vessel is required to be maintained to a minimum level as part of the "rental" agreement. Munitions, fuel and critical parts are stored at nearby military reservations. And at any time the Navy commanders can request the reactivation of said vessel. This is understandable, since in modern air controlled warfare a battleship is only a target. But in case of a near shore war, these vessels are still severely overpowered. Look up the first gulf war to see what a nation facing these ships truly feels. However, that doesn't mean these vessels can be reactivated overnight. SOP plan for the reactivation of one of these is weeks... If they are in a hurry. The anchoring chains alone would be 3-4 hours to cut at best. It was nice to see her respected again. But this is like a girl going to prom only taking 5 minutes to get ready. Just ain't happening. Can she be reactivated... Yes. In a day... Mythbusters called... That one is busted.

@andrewjohnson6716 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that. That’s useful and interesting information.
@anticarrrot
@anticarrrot 3 жыл бұрын
Those reactivation plans are going to include lots of preventative maintenance, because they want to put it back into storage in the same condition as they found it. If you don't care about that, and only need it to last a day, move a few dozen miles, and endure one quick fight - you'd be surprised how much you can skip. HArdest part would be quick starting the engines without melting them (which we sort of see) and loading the ammo on board, which we don't. The real error was the absence of every marine fire team on the island also being on board, with every anti-tank rocket they can find. A few hundred of those would do horrible damage to anything. (Speaking of which, the reason there was no marine assault land assault on the transmitters was..... what again?) But the massed casualties would get in the way of a happy end, so...
@DevinEMILE
@DevinEMILE 3 жыл бұрын
The main reason three out of the four Iowa class still being in the reserve fleet is marine generals are skeptical if we have the firepower to cover a beach landing if something like that happens again. Now I did read awhile ago that they where considering decommissioning the rest of them. I haven’t seen what came of that though. Ironically the Iowa is the only Iowa class battleship not able to be reactivated due to the fact only two of her turrets our operational.

I think my favorite theory revolves around the regents being a bunch of interstellar miners who heard the signal, decided to swoop in close, accidently crashed their comm ship and through a hilarious sequence of screw-ups escalated an inadvertent first contact into a small engagement. Those charge launchers would be great for breaking apart asteroids that have been encapsulated by the giant shield generator of the mothership, with the grinders set to deploy to tear up stubborn ore into collectable amounts. The multi-shank option could be a variety of mining equipment and terrain clearing tools. Hell, add the right subtitles and the entire theme of the movie becomes more then a little different.

This is probably more thought than this movie deserves, but I noticed that the issues with the Regents clear up if the regents aren't here to invade. They may have been interplanetary refuges. The reluctance to fire first may have been an attempt to show that they were not hostile and the weapons could have been repurposed equipment for some other job such as mining. The mind meld could have been an attempt to communicate to the human attackers that they were running from a war on their home world and the attempts to call out a means of letting their friends know that this was not a hospitable world.

The amusing thing is they were actually going to use the U.S.S. Missouri at sea in their film, they spent weeks/months trying to get it to sail, but were unable to. Unlike in the film where they were able to get her to sail with the power of the montage, which would have been a couple of hours at best due to the films time frame to stop the broadcast. So most of the scenes with her at sea were either completely CGI, or they had to tow her around then removed the tugs and tow lines in post.

My theory: The mother ship has a shield, the others don't. So during FTL I would assume the mothership keeps a shield around all the ships in a squad. Maintaining the shield would be energy taxing, so at lower speeds they drop it. While in the water the mothership can draw up water and convert into hydrogen for power, allowing them to lock down the area while they try to get comms back up.

They just wanted to phone home to get back but we refused to let them leave. 2. Their ships weren't built for our atmosphere and/or gravity. The flopping about was due to our gravity being higher then they were expecting or the gas mixture of our air wasn't correct to allow their fuels to combust correctly.

I haven't seen this stupid movie, but I'm wondering if maybe they were refugees? No invasion force would only attack defensively at first. I could see Refugees capturing a comms dish to call their buddies, though. They would attack the humans out of self defense at that point, and send what are basically MPs or cops out to protect them. That would also explain the reason he telepathically told the human huge amounts of info. Maybe he was saying "Our planet is getting wrecked by war, so we came here." The peg missiles would probably be for asteroid mining, and the spinner things would just be cargo or passenger drones they had ram people because they were desperate.

I like to think it was a diplomatic mission to warn the humans of an incoming attack from a third party, except there communication ship, and thus only way to reliably relay this info to the humans, was destroyed. That would explain why such a small force showed up, it was meant to be as unintimidating as possible. It would also explain why they operated on a "only fire if being fired upon" code of conduct. And it somewhat explains why that alien was so willing to show the captain the images of earth's destruction. It was a warning, and in taking hostile action, Paul doomed humanity to be unprepared when the actual invasion force showed up.

what annoyed me most about the movie is experienced wartime veterans didn't shell the shit out of the hostile forces from many kilometers away, and decided a knife fight (essentially anything within 7km in battleship terms) with highly agile technologically superior ships was a good idea. The Missouri has a maximum firing distance of 39km. Hell, they even decided going broadside to an enemy with highly destructive, reasonably accurate rapid fire armor piercing mortars.

It seems to me like they simply send a diplomatic envoy, the communications ship crashed which made them unable to communicate with humanity. Then they panicked and made a shield around them, didn't attack anyone as they were there for piece and humans came around and decided to just shoot them down with no previous aggression whatsoever. Which made them go like "wtf mates?". I don't know how it all works exactly, but who exactly leads the operation against the aliens? Did he have communication with headquarters? What rank did he have? This was a fleet of ships so it should be an admiral. Why exactly is that lieutenant person important in this case? I mean a ship like the missouri would be controlled by a captain. If that lieutenant actually decided to start the attack I'm relatively sure they will put him into prison for attacking an unknown ship without establishing communications and without the other ship actually performing any other kind of threat. They should just make a sequel were they send their military next and just take over the planet.

They just headed to the nearest signal they were getting which would be earth. It would explain why their ships were out of control in crashing, why they didn't fire first and why they were hesitant to retaliate? They may have even been civilians rather than military personnel which might explain why the war, when finally fought was conducted in such a sloppy manner? And why -- being a mindless bucket of rage is not a survival skill, at least not for long. Any creature like it would kill all the animals in its environment in a short time, and then starve to death, well before more intelligent life could evolve. Actually, the peg-launchers having to lead their target, then being confounded by evasive maneuvers, was fairly realistic. Technically, the naval anti-air guns were doing the same thing. The only problem is the unbearably slow reload time of those launchers; again, the continuous rapid-firing of the AA gun shows how to do it right.

I forget - have you already covered the Martians from the War of the Worlds remake? I'm not sure there's enough for an entire video, but they deserve an honorable (or is that dishonorable) mention for having an attack plan that hinged entirely on reactivating warmachines that have been in the ground for millions of years, not to mention assuming that local microbes wouldn't evolve to be deadly in all that time. Hell, they were probably done in by microbes left behind by whatever team buried the original warmachines - it's a lot more plausible than a random Earth microbe attaching itself to a literally alien biology. In any case, this was another great video - the regents make no sense at all.

@@kaelanirevyruun1676 that's what I'm saying - they somehow expected that not to happen - though now I come to think on it, maybe that's the least dumb thing about them. I could see them coming to ancient Earth to bury their war machines, finding primitive microbes, and taking them back for study. The lab microbes don't do much, so the martians just assume (incorrectly) that the wild microbes followed the same path.

“Too stupid to really exist” is an overstatement! For a Michael Bay movie, this actually gave us some of the best alien invaders until we saw the Flaxans from Invincible! Their melee weapons leave a lot to be desired because they aren’t used to Earthling assault rifles. Their soldiers do everything in their power to avoid hitting peaceful locals. They value the lives of their soldiers as seen when they launch a rescue mission for the one captured by the humans. The first five ships are reconnaissance and they immediately prepare to reestablish communications with their home world.

you completely misunderstood the directors intention in the film. The Aliens weren't hostile invaders, there's a scene when the aliens are near the array and the female alien says to a sailor "help us" so best guess is they are refugee's on the run from something that attacked them. but as soon as the navy ship fired a "warning shot" the aliens mistook it for a hostile action that just missed them and then it escalated from there.

Hear is a theory what if this was not an invasion force, more like a diplomatic ship and there escorts. the diplomatic ship was the one destroyed when it impacted with the satellite, and the other ships did not have the long range communication ability or the training to continue the mission, lets say they have a cast system and the only ones left were the warrior and worker casts. if they were ordered by there leaders to avoid conflict with the humans and there rules of engagement were as messed up as the USA's during the Vietnam War it would make sense. also they deploy the drones after they have bean engaged repeatedly by the Humans, just a thought. also if the The Regents are divided into a cast system or something that would the training that there personal get it would explain the garbled telepathic message that one gave the main character. lets say it what the main character so was not what they planed for earth but what was happening to there world. it might also explain why there ships were so poorly If you where are at war with another some one that was causing as much damage as what was shone in that "vision" would you send your best weapons on a diplomatic mission, or would you pullout some mothball peace of crap and send that instead and leave your biggest guns for the front? The Mothball theory would also explain to a point why the Regents seem incompetent if they are using weapons ships and equipment that they are not well trained in the use of it might explain why they seam to have such difficulty controlling there there tech. well those are just my thoughts. good video!

Could you do the Saiyans and Freeza's empire (not possible to mention one without the other) from Dragon Ball Z? Just the way the Saiyans went from a primitive hunter-gather society to advanced space faring civilization by killing all the Truffles and stealing their technology is hard to believe. Instead of enslaving the remaining Truffles to build and maintain the technology they wanted they somehow traveled to another planet without their help. Then met another alien race that needed a new planet to live on and did a business deal to conquer a new habitual planet for them to live on in exchange of scientists and engineers to maintain their newly acquired technology. They made this a successful business venture with other aliens for 10 years before getting conquered by Freeza who then used them to conquer other planets for him faster than he could do it alone. Which then Brings up Freeza who is a genocidal maniac conquering planets much faster than can be repopulated with either his own race that there isn't many of or the various alien races who work for him. After noticing that Saiyans get stronger after surviving a serious injury he gets paranoid and destroys their planet and all but 4 Saiyans are left. He not only allows 3 of them to keep working for him instead of killing them all but allows them to personally retrieve the 4th Saiyan who was suppose to conquer Earth but didn't. Freeza is then eventually defeated and killed by a Saiyan.

with the movie battleship, I think that the vision the alien showed him was actually to show how they destroyed their own world, and needed a new one to colonize. the ships they sent may have very well been damaged as they entered our solar system. keep in mind that they didn't become overtly hostile until Hopper fired a "warning shot" or when they made physical contact with one of the structures. they should have contacted the government to inform them of the structures rather than taking it into their own hands, which is something you should never do with an unknown entity, hence the poor navel procedures mentioned here. it seems they were more looking to colonize and perhaps use the communication ship to not only link with their homeworld, but with us as well. I think the vision scene was a bit of wasted potential as he never really revealed what he saw and put it up for interpretation. just a little theory of mine.

my biggest gripe. It takes up to three days to move the Missouri. Sure, she's oil fired, but it's still a steam plant that is used for propulsion. You don't get to knock off a couple banners, cut away mooring chins, hit the throttle and go. The steam plant during war time was never shut down, but would at worst be dropped to 'idle' unless the ship was expected to be moored for an extended period. From dead cold, at least a solid 2 days of fires in her boilers before she'd even have enough steam to pull away from the dock.

I've always thought the regents initial intent wasn't violent. My thought is, they can't see our tech, as indicated during the movie. They hit the satellite because they didnt know it was there. From thier perspective we called them over then blew up one of thier ships when they got here. The regent that projected to hopper probably had a friend or family on the downed ship, was pissed off and projected what it wanted to happen to earth. Probably why they only attack when threatened. If I'm not mistaken I thought it was also established that not all the regents were soilders but scientists. Thier original mission was likely exploration. When you think about it the same thing would happen here. What if a country called on another for help and when the other country showed up one of their ships is attacked. I think it will play out just the same, minus the force field.

My theory is that might have been a mining unit that had their communication damaged to the point they can only receive but not send. So they go to earth after receiving a message, which they realized they could use to call home for assistance. They didn't want to fight the beings on the planet so they set up the force field, only fight when necessary, and destroy things that could be used to attack or stop them (doesn't explain why they didn't destroy the boats though). Their weapons seemed to be based around defense and destruction of the environment more than military offense.
