I learned to shoot on film back in the mid-90s when I was a teenager, I used to own a Pentax spot meter and learned this system several years ago, I still employ this system today. After all, spot metering is the zone system, but many people do not understand or use it correctly. I came across your video to find a good resource to help someone that I know who does not understand spot metering, and your video was very helpful to them, thank you very much.

An excellent exposition on the use of spot metering - the best I've seen. Small correction: the "evaluative" metering ( at least on the Nikon matrix metering system) is not a a simple averaging of light intensity in several parts of the scene. Rather, both the intensity and relative pattern of those measurements is compared to a stored record of many patterns which are associated with common types of scenes. The meter picks an exposure based on the associated pattern in memory. So for example, a landscape with a large percentage of bright sky and a darker foreground would average to an underexposure. However, the matrix metering would "recognize" the excess of bright sky and adjust the overall exposure to compensate. Of course, if the meter guesses wrong, your screwed, which is why you need to understand the lessons shown here.

Totally true. The Matrix and Evaluative metering of modern cameras are more than average. But we tried to keep it simple for beginners, so that they can go into the Advanced levels.
