The first thing to know about Raji: An Ancient Epic is its high ambitions to bring Indian culture to the global gaming market. Raji is the dream: a game steeped in the myth and aesthetic of India's past...actually made by the Indian developers who know it best. The second thing to know about Raji is that it is a creatively safe game - remarkably so. Though the world you explore is as gorgeous as it is singular, the actual gameplay you've seen a hundred times before. And so despite the fact that Raji is a well-executed game on a technical level, I still walked away from it feeling a little underwhelmed.

Thanks for covering this! I'd love to see more from India in the future. I also really enjoyed this piece by Vice on where Raji subverts and unfortunately falls in line with current far right Indian politics www.vice.com/en/article/m7ajbv/raji-ancient-indian-epic-far-right-hindu-nationalism

@@katakuri9189 Hi sorry you feel that way. I'm going to take a chance that you aren't a bot or troll and try to explain. You know how in high school English class (or your equivalent if you aren't from the USA) you had to read books or poems or whatever? Not only did you expand your vocabulary and learn more complex sentence structure, but you also had to discuss the text from a bunch of different angles: what are the themes, historical context, authorial intent, etc? Well I hated that class too! But the surprise is I super enjoy thinking about games in that way. And so do a lot of other people! If you don't like thinking of things that way and just want to escape into the game that's fine. That's your decision. But it's my decision to do what I'm doing too. And I shared that article in case anyone else was curious about the game in that way. If you don't want to then all you have to do is ignore it and do your own thing. I'd encourage you to think deeper about games when you're ready though. I was once like you, but now I find that learning about games in this way has been tremendously satisfying and enlightening. Have a good one,

Indian guy here. _Disclaimer:Being an Indian games enthusiast, I'm biased. Our culture is BARELY represented outside our subcontinent, so we accept what we get._ _So this comment is will sound like an apologist._ A bit about India's game dev scene. Outside of really good outsourcing/support studios and mobile-focused studios, there is BARELY any dev scene. There are some small titles like Rainswept, Lovely Planet, Asura, Miner's Mettle, Alter Army and the upcoming Antarish Sanchaar (my personal most anticipated video game). Raji is still better than most, at least in polish, because the devs comprised of ex-Rockstar India staff. Since there is no media fund like in western countries nor have any support (guidance, mentorship, programmes, conferences), devs like Raji's have to pull all their own resources and work with it. One dev had to sell her apartment to keep the project afloat. The voice actors in-game are mostly the devs themselves. On the game itself. I'm really glad you found the stories fascinating. I'm little frustrated they tried to cram EVERY Hindu lore, because reading them in full is a fantastic experience. Growing up on Hindu myth in India (in a Hindu family) is equivalent to fantasy stories western people grow up on through movies, DnD, comics and games. Watch any of the Overly Sarcastic Production's incredible videos to get a sense. I do really feel this should at least perform well in the market so that devs and [people with money] get more interested. I know that after the Switch Direct, a lot of people showed clear interest in more Indian/Hindu stories.

I can definitely understand where you're coming from! That also explains a fair bit about why the devs might go with such a safe game. The game's definitely got high ambitions I hope it can meet, and I'm hoping that they get a chance to make another game. I really do think they can pull off something special from a talent perspective even if I bounced off of this one.

That truly is some incredible artwork! Really nice to see talented artist from India porting their games over to Western markets. Here's hoping we can get one just as beautiful with solid gameplay in the future. :)

Yanno, I might actually check this out. It certainly looks cool. And the one advantage of being a game noob is that you can experience all these 'done to death' mechanics and find them new and enjoyable :D Definitely interested in learning a little bit about Indian mythology and culture as well ^_^ Thanks for bringing this game to my attention!

This is definitely one of those games I'd play for free with twitch prime. Seems like a cool premise and looks pretty as hell, and indian mythology is something i'm 100% unfamiliar with and interested in

I had tried a demo during one of steam's event around the end of this summer and I just couldn't get into it. You placed the exact right words into what I felt about the game. Thanks for the review, they are so well writen and quite inspiring!

I loved Raji but it was full of bugs when I played it on Switch a year ago. I still have to go back to check if they did enough patchwork to make it fully playable.

The pathetic self-flagellation around 0:20 is wholly expected, considering that embarrassing video on the game with fire mechanics, but deeply irksome nonetheless. Less of that trite bullshit, fine video otherwise.

I think you must've gotten your timestamps mixed up there buddy boyo. If you go back, you'll find that the only self-flagellation that appears in this video happens at 2:52!

@@FirstFive I'm positive you know what I meant - self-flagellation on account of race, broadly speaking. Don't know how you meant the "buddy boyo", the phrase is unfamiliar to me, but it seems to be a sneer.

@@GNeves302 I suppose now that you asserted that the criticism was incontestable, I look very foolish. Consider that some non americans categorically reject what you consider obvious or harmless. Signalling that is what the comment section is for.

@@witoldmatuszek8736 I know what you meant. I rolled my eyes at it. Not only is it self-flagellation, it's practically vilification. I instantly thought of Brie Larson with her comment about "40-year-old white dudes" reviewing "A Wrinkle in Time." At this point, doing anything when you're white is a punishable offense, including being born (and I wish I were joking). By his logic, he must not have any interest in "Sifu." I can guarantee you that if the people in his example were black, he wouldn't have said shit about it. Look at all of the bullshit "diversity" rhetoric being pushed. I shit you not, critics called the "Black Panther" cast "diverse."
