I wanted to like Nier, I really did. I had only heard good things... I managed to get to... the forest king? I think that was the last thing I did? And put the game down. I'd heard that the game goes into some very heavy stuff, no worries, I can handle heavy, and, yet, here, by the time I'd gotten to this point, the deepest thing I had come on was either the reframing of the Ship of Theseus, or the idea that a lo-o-ot of robots can suddenly create life? "Meh" said I... And, then, I played FF14 through Endwalker, and the Nier raids were in there somewhere, and I heard Yoko Tarro was directly making the decisions for how the mobs and bosses would react and attack and such, and, seeing as everything was a goddamn bullet sponge in those raids, I think I figured out why I hated Nier... well, that and the not fully connected to the storytelling the bosses presented...

I used to play NieR automata in my university days in-between project crunches and studies. In hindsight, It felt to me like relationships - you gotta work on it for it to come back and shower you with love. And the good thing about hindsight enjoyment? A good chunk of nier’s life lessons lives in you forever ❤

as someone who loves the gnosia story, I completely agree with all of this. I also loved that you pointed out the nonbinary characters, the biggest gnosia lore explanation video uses she/her on setsu (they/them) the whole way through and as a feminine nb person it made the video unbearable. nice little recommendation video, though i would say the game doesnt fully stray away from not pg elements (one of the notes has you discover the other nonbinary crewmember, raqio, is amab by... walking in on them in the shower. yeah its not hard to guess what your player sees)

I beat nier automata’s true ending a few weeks ago and it was genuinely one of the biggest wastes of times I’ve ever experienced in a big budget game. The combat was absolutely brain dead on 2b and 9s (which made doing side quests, fusing chips, or finding stronger weapons completely pointless), the multiple route system did not provide nearly enough quality ideas to make the time sync worth it, the characters to me are largely uninteresting or downright poorly written, the philosophy aspect has nothing of its own to say and feels more like the devs copy and pasted from an “intro to philosophy” book (every single idea the game presents is done infinitely better is other media), etc. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on the game because I’m honest to god trying to figure out why it’s so critically acclaimed. (Other than people thirsting over 2b’s ass)

Some of the best Sci-Fi stories such as 2001, Primer, Predestination, etc are never blockbuster that everyone watched and this title is the same. They all cover some deep and existential topics and cut deeply for those who ask the deep meaningful questions that the title guides you to ponder. But even the act to philosophize is something reserved for minority of us as audience. If it's a perfect game for everyone then it's not a deep and philosophical game comparatively speaking.

I appreciate you talking about that as adults we have extremely limited gaming time and that should be respected. You can’t compete with a 15 year olds for time invested in grinding.

If you ignore the themes and philosophies being explored, the story falls apart if you rub two brain cells together as does the backstory. This is true for all NieR games. I don't think that makes it a bad game, though. As far as gameplay goes, though, NieR: Automata is rightly praised as one of the best.

And now there's an element of the gaming "community" that's down on longer games, for some reason - usually just morons following a certain trend. I definitely feel the anti ubisoft/open world faction are so self-entitled and misguided. But I'm sure the gaming companies will be happy to oblige thier request for shorter and smaller games with less content....

Had the exact same issue with the teleporter on the same level. Except I spent 20 minutes and didn’t find it. Read they sometimes get stuck in walls. Has happened twice in the 4 hours I’ve played, so this issue still exists

I played through the a route and found the plot and character archs lackluster. Some of the characters seemed childish and the philosophical tropes weren't all that deep. Idk mabey it gets deeper upon more play throughs. 10/10 sweet android butt

Veteran Descent Pyro-jockey here. I find it very strange that you criticize Descent and praise Dark Souls for doing the same things. In fact, before you brought up Dark Souls, everything you were saying about Descent sounded entirely identical to some descriptions of DS I’ve heard. So yes, I did roll my eyes when you brought it up, and I rolled them hard. The drillers in Descent are brutal but you make it sound like they were around every corner. They weren’t. Most mechs have audio cues for seeing the player and don’t have hitscan weapons. In fact, the driller was the ONLY hitscan weapon mech in the game. You could go entire levels without seeing one. The fact is that in Descent you are an invader and have to fly as such - you found out the hard way that the Pyro is not durable nor fast, so maneuvering is key. Are the corridors tight? Yes. But the Pyro has the thrusters to deal with the environment, you just have to properly use them. (Just out of curiosity, how often were you finding yourself flying backwards or orbiting the inside of a room by using slide and turn simultaneously?) You can’t go in guns blazing and expect to survive; you have to fly more tactically than that. Yes, you often have to be sneaky. That’s why the mechs have a detection mechanic. Bosses and many normal enemies in Dark Souls ALL kill you in one or two hits, just as fast as any driller, and you have to analyze their minute movements for many deaths (if you even get the chance) just to figure out when a single attack is coming. Finding a boss turns DS into Corpse Run: The Game. You also neglected to mention the “let’s cut your maximum HP” thing that Dark Souls does as a death punishment that makes it progressively more impossible to do literally anything. Corpse runs in Dark Souls also force you to deal with EVERYTHING respawning, while Descent only spawns from the purple materialization centers (which actually only do so on specific triggers and only work a certain number of times unless you’re at a very high difficulty; I know this, I used to build levels) And don’t try to tell me that losing XP in DS isn’t a big deal. I prefer a game to not entirely erase my progress, wasting my very limited time. I can’t stand Dark Souls but Descent I’ll play. At least Descent has selectable difficulty levels, instead of just saying “too hard? Too bad.” You can also save any time, as you saw. You also didn’t play Descent 2. It was a massive improvement and is still the community favorite. It added an energy-to-shield converter (I.e. HEALING), an afterburner, a headlight, an ammo rack, and many other quality of life things that make the game far easier and more interesting. There is also a guide bot for every level. And if you can’t learn to read the automap, I really don’t know what to tell you. I apologize for my tone. I don’t want to come off as hating but you did not give Descent a fair chance at all here. There’s nothing wrong with liking Dark Souls. I respect what From Software did even if I find it basically unplayable as an adult with things to do. (I also admit the setting of basically all Fromsoft games bore me, which is totally a me thing) Just realize that everything you said about Descent I can apply doubly to Dark Souls. I realize that’s likely entirely a matter of perspective, but there was a reason Descent has endured - and it has endured, I assure you. Descent 4 was going to be made but there was bad blood between its developers and the engine and code ended up being Red Faction. That’s why Overload was made. We Pyro-jockeys are still out there.

I remember staying up all night playing Sim City as a teenager, I'd be so invested I didn't even notice time passing until dawn came around and my mom was calling for me to get ready for school. Now that I'm in my 30s I don't really have the same stamina to stay up all night that way - heck, even just spending a full day playing video games gets kind of exhausting, and hurts my eyes (growing old sucks), so Against the Storm lets me experience that same feeling as I remember, while being condensed into a far shorter timeframe and it's amazing. It's also a rather relaxing game, that helps me destress, since I have a general anxiety disorder - between the low stakes of just starting over if things go too bad, the somewhat simplified game mechanics, and the amazing and alternately peaceful and melancholy/creepy music, I can just feel the tension melt away when I play it (except when playing on Viceroy difficulty mode). Ironically, I've played far more hours of Against the Storm than any other game in recent years, just because of how easy it is to jump right into it and back out whenever you need to do something else (like sleep or eat).

For those wondering, a full run of My Time At Sandrock took me 120 hours, and I have to say I felt a little sad finally saying goodbye to its lovable goobers. It's a game that tackles subjects like the struggle between self-expression and practicality or the danger of even the most benign ideologies leading to radicalization with surprising maturity for its cartoony visuals.
