I feel as though the lack of a pub in Booze or a greasy spoon in Fryup represent missed business opportunities. I'm originally from Worcestershire where we have Lickey End, Bell End and Minge Lane within a few miles of one another. We also have our own Cockshott Lane (not to be confused with the one in Armley :)

When I was a kid I would spend ages just going through the atlas of the UK looking for the most stupid names. Most of them were from Yorkshire north to Scotland, but I think that is mainly because in the south more of the tiny places got swallowed up by bigger places.

I was planning to move to Wetwang about 20 years ago and had put my name down on a plot of land (in what is now Chariot Way). Whilst they were digging the foundations, they unearthed an iron age chariot burial which delayed things so much I had to buy elsewhere. Great village: 2 pubs (Black Swan and Victoria) and one of the best chip shops in Britain. My parents are buried in Garton and I have to avoid visiting their grave when the chip shop is open, for the sake of my waistline.

Entertaining vlog. Reminds me of a visit to Shipley where I saw a bus with a slightly skewed destination blind going to Idle Moo. In Lancashire (foreign parts) there's a suburb of Morecambe called Bare, as a child I was always amused by the road sign, at the Shrimp Roundabout on the A589, for the B5375 to Bare on which some wag had scrawled Bum!

There is also a part of Morecambe called The Battery. Now I don't know if it was a coincidence or someone did it on purpose, but when Morecambe and Lancaster had its own buses, the route to.the Battery was the U2. I kid you not.

The Land of Nod got its name as there was a pub there on the Market Weighton canal. Boat men would stop in the pub, drink to much and fall asleep, hence the name. Neither the canal or pubs are there, just a couple of farms. I was told this when I went to school in Holme upon Spalding Moor

I feel Upperthong and Netherthong near Holmfirth were missed opportunities. Cock Hill between Oxenhope and Hebden Bridge similarly. Warter and Warthill near York suggest some sort of medical problem in the area. Thwing, near Bridlington is funny, but not particularly rude. Egypt, Jericho, Jerusalem, and World's End near Thornton in Bradford seem a little out of place.

Pen is "head" in the Welsh language. Penistone. I is "to" but if the i becomes a y, as it often does in English, Y would be the article and is used as a link word to form compound nouns. So I'm left wondering is their is a Welsh linguistic link in the name.
@colingrant5731
@colingrant5731 2 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but the clear linguistic links to Welsh suggests Welsh Celts settled in the Pennines. A couple of obious e.g. Pen-y Ghent, a well known Yorkshire hill, and Dewsbury, as in Dewi, David's town.

Its funny that there's a grave yard at the end of the runway, gives you confidence! Am I right in thinking that was used by Avro?

Please turn this into a series of counties all over the UK as I am sure there are enough place names suitable. Could swell your subscribers

When I was a student in Ripon (half a century ago!), I lodged on Ure Bank, at the bottom of which was the Railway Inn, next to the derelict rail station, closed by Beeching years before. I suggested that since the railway had gone, he should rename the pub after the nearby river. My suggestion (the Ure Inn) did not go down well.....

I would have been very disappointed if Wetwang didn’t get a mention…but I’m pleased it got position 1! The old county of Yorkshire is full of lovely old place names. Back in the 1980s I used to have to occasionally visit Mankinholes near Todmorden whenever we had to check the TV relay station there. One one visit my colleague was driving our IBA (ITV ) u.h.f. TV survey vehicle…packed with expensive equipment…and after we left the transmitter site we approached a narrow gap between two farm buildings. It was very muddy road because the cows had just crossed the road for milking. We stopped to allow a very fast Ford Estate car that was ‘belting’ towards us…he couldn’t stop because of the mud. We were stationary when he hit us and when he hit our Volvo (built like a tank it was hardly dented at the front) the driver disappeared in a sea of red particles, sausages and raw meat lumps! The butcher’s delivery vehicle had been full of fresh meat for customer’s freezers and everything went flying over the seats to bombard the driver. We were relieved to find that (although covered with blood, mincemeat and liver, etc from the shoulders up) he was unharmed. His biggest worry was what he was going to tell his boss … as it was his car! I’m sure it would have smelled very badly within a few days! And no…we weren’t given any free samples! Incidentally, if you ever visit the Hampshire Downs…be sure to visit Betty Mundy’s Bottom near Corhampton. Some beautiful views from the downs…I was a frequent visitor years ago (for nature walks…nothing else!). Named after a farmer’s wife it’s no longer a farmhouse unfortunately. Regards, Rob.
