These landings still look realistic, even today. Can you imagine a kid in the 1950s seeing them? Yet another reason for the show's incredible success. Thanks for the post.

Realistic? 😆. It's quite clear he's jumping from something out of shot. When he takes off it obvious he's jumping from a spring board so I don't know how you can say it looks realistic. Christopher Reeve is by far much more convincing.

George Reeves had to be in great physical shape even to do those landings, especially those in which he is coming in on an angle. He gave life and humanity to an iconic character that endures to this very day. God bless you George: a great actor.

Stunt doubles did the heavy lifting. Reeves only did the easy stuff He was allergic to the padding in the costume. He was tall but not muscular. The stunt doubles were in the costume 12 hours a day. Reeves could only wear it less than 30 minutes..The costume was changed in the shows shot in color. Reeves did not have the broad shoulders and slim waist or even the spitcurl that Kirk Alyn, Christopher Reeve or Brandon Routh had. He was better as Clark Kent but he was no Superman.

Despite Hollywood's millions in Tv and movie special effects for Superman, that supersonic scenery in this TV series with the most believable Superman -- GeorgeReeves -- is still the best. No ballet in the sky. No silence. No evidence of speed. And when he crashes through a wall it's fantastic. The one landing that was not featured here -- one of the more spectacular entrances wasn't even on the Superman TV series. It was when Reeves landed in front of little Ricky Ricardo during his birthday party in "I Love Lucy". What an entrance. And at that time, what a special guest appearance. I believe it was one of the highest-rated episodes at that time. I'm a baby-boomer and I remember something special -- in the '50s there were 3 motion picture icons -- Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean. But there were only 2 cultural icons that had an enormous fan base and affect on that new post-war generation: Elvis Presley & Superman. They're the ones with the lunch boxes, dolls, and all the media perks. I agree with ECO473 -- it's a shame George Reeves didn't live long enough to see how his fans truly loved him well into adulthood. But at least Noel Neill, Phyliss Coates, (who is still alive at 92 & last of the original cast), and Jack Larson did.

George played.the part brilliantly. He put so much into that role. He played Clark Kent as a cool component reporter and Superman with a serious kind of charm. As well having a great physical and athletic approach to the part. I've heard that the series was considered a low budget production. However, their production work seems pretty high quality to me. The acting, the story lines, the special effects and overall production value, still hold up very well. I enjoyed this program as a child, I enjoyed watching with my child and now I enjoy watching it with my grandchildren. That is a testament to how good this show really was. George, you will never be forgoten!

@Graeme McFee: Iḿ not trying to insult you personally, but Christopher Reeves was the absolute worse S/M. It wasn´t his fault, the director made his Clark Kent persona into a pussy, and Clark Kent was NOT a pussy. His Superman persona was acceptable, however, against popular opinion, I think Brandon Roth´s depiction in Superman Returns was the best Superman since George Reeves.

@@jaelge I won't dispute that Reeve was a lackluster Superman, but his wimpy Clark Kent was not something made up for his movies. The very earliest Siegel and Shuster stories had Clark's public persona as an even bigger wimp than Reeve ever was. By the time of Kirk Alyn and George Reeves, Clark's character was toned down a lot in the comics, which is why Alyn and Reeves played Clark as a regular working stiff. Reeve's Clark Kent was a throwback to the earliest, most cowardly version of the character. However, most other live-action versions of Superman before and after opt for making the Clark Kent persona just a regular guy. The ultra-cowardly version of the very first comics is the exception, not the rule.

Aside from the theme song (which some suspect may have been adapted from pre-existing stock music cues), *The Adventures of Superman* was scored entirely with stock music. A re-recording of the series' soundtrack would be a mix and match of library music by many composers.

@reidmason2551

Most Superman actors either look like the comic book incarnations of their era or like one or another artist's interpretation. Kirk Alyn looked like Joe Shuster's early art. Reeves looked like the comic book drawings of Wayne Boring, Al Plastino, and Curt Swan. Christopher Reeve looked like Neal Adams and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez's drawings. Dean Cain looked like Barry Kitson's artwork. Brandon Routh looked like Pascual Ferry's drawings. Henry Cavill looked like John Byrne and Jerry Ordway's interpretations. Tyler Hoechlin looks like Tony Daniel's artwork. And so on. The only actor who doesn't look much like any comic book Superman is Tom Welling, and even at that there's been at least one artist who's tried to model their Superman after him. It all depends on which era of the comics and which actor is in question.

I believe it's a snippet of reversed bullet ricochet. It's also used in many Warner bros cartoons.

I love how everyone trusts Superman without question. The idea was that people should be true to their words and deeds. Seems to be something in short supply in today's world. I'm so sick of dark, flawed "hero's."

George Reeves had his take-offs and landing down to a science. He would usually swing in from an overhead bar or jump off a platform/ladder. He would bounce off a spring-board to take off. Most other Supermen didn't put much effort into either.

Most other Supermen had the benefit of safer flying rigs and CGI, which weren't available back in the 1950s. And then there was Dean Cain, who got the raw end of the stick when it came to flying FX. They couldn't even be bothered to use a springboard for his takeoffs; he had to run off-camera flapping his cape. Poor guy.
