Adventures and Naps

Күн бұрын

Have you ever tried Scotland's most infamous alcoholic drink? This week I try it for myself - along with some other Scottish food and sweets!
As a foreigner living in the UK, I love trying new food and it was a lot of fun to try out some Scottish food for once! This time, I taste test traditional Scottish tablet to Buckfast tonic wine and of course, Irn Bru! Oh and some Scottish shortbread!! Yum!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZfaq video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

Buckfast... hmm. Looks like the sort of thing best enjoyed straight from the bottle on a park bench in the middle of the day. Whilst shouting garbled abuse at the ducks, probably. Something I like is lorne sausage (sometimes called square sausage I believe, Scots out there may be able to confirm). Always had it when I've ventured into Scotland and loved it but you rarely find it down here... deffo pick some up if you find some!

Many years ago now my niece was getting christened, my sister was living in Buckfastleigh, in Devon, and being catholic, this was done at the Abby. My mother got talking to one of the monks, one of the senior monks, and was invited to partake of a glass of Buckfast wine, or two. I ended up with her feet, my dad had her arms, all was fine until she came round, talk about a grumpy head! My sister was not impressed. Just so that my niece was aware what happened, she was only a very young baby at the time, at her eventual wedding, my mother did the same, again, got talking to the priest at the reception, this was in Claridges, and it was Champagne, not Buckfast wine, she has not touched it since that fateful day, also I don’t think Claridges would serve such a beverage, as my niece was making her grand entrance, my mother fell at her feet in a very drunken stupor. It was all videoed by the wedding photographer I still have the video. On odd occasions I mention to my niece that it would be a good video to put onto youtube. As my niece is now fairly famous, had a TV series, and some other high profile ‘things’, she is really not impressed. Catholics in general have no problem with alcohol as in drinking the stuff.

Eh Bucky is also 15% so sip it and don't mix your drinks... err with the cider... Oh well see you in a couple of days . Great vlog! I adore your tasting videos.

No Tunnocks Tea Cakes or Deep fried Mars bars? Tennent's Super is up there with Buckfast. No caffeine but It's a 9% lager. Maybe it's a good job that Buckfast isn't easy to find in Kent ;o)

My favourite Scottish drink is Red Kola! Dang. That stuff is GOOD. Very hard to find in England though. Favourite food is anything you might order at the restaurant Opium in Glasgow. Such a great little place to eat, anyone in that neck of the woods should go! Bonus points for them using lockdown to feed the homeless around Glasgow. Lovely people.

Good Morning - I have only recently stumbled upon your site, and gotta say it's enjoyable. You are fun and don't appear to be overly scared about trying things, or more importantly what some folk say. Pleased to hear that you have a bit of Scottish ancestry and particularly enjoyed the Scottish foods with Bucky, I have to say I was initially thrown due to Buckfast obviously being produced in England, but you did point that out. I was worried as I thought you were going to try Tennants Super Lager, now if you haven't heard or tried that, it could be worth googling. Keep up the great work and as I do a lot of travelling I will work my way through the rest of your videos. Take care.

Hey Alanna, so you're taking on Scotland, with it's food and drink. Brave, very brave but I love that you try out all these things I can't eat because of the sugar. Once again, I can eat vicariously through you. :-) I had Thistly Cross back when I drank and it is really nice. I also like Irn Bru Extra but it's definitely one of the 'acquired tastes'.

Irn Bru is legal in Canada now! I am part of a group that sold it in Dawson City for a fund raiser. One kid tried it, tentatively, then the word got round, and we sold out in about 10 minutes! The shortbread took a little longer. I love both, as it happens, although I prefer Tizer to drink.
