IPA = India Pale Ale. This type of beer was developed for export and used ingredients designed to make the beer stable so as not to spoil on long sea journeys. In practice, they reduced the malt and increased the hops. Double IPA is, I believe, double hopped in that hops are added both before and after fermentation. I've always found IPAs to be quite harsh on first taste but they improve as I drink more! I must say I suspect chilli peanuts did little to improve the first tastes of the beers.

Indian pale ale was developed for the British army in India. Hence the name.
@harveybrant3352

My understanding is that the 'double' in double IPA refers to the amount of malt used. More malt means more sugar to ferment and therefore usually a stronger beer. That's what my local craft brewer told me anyway.
@PeterWasted
@PeterWasted 2 жыл бұрын
@@harveybrant3352 Having now fact checked myself, you are correct in that the "double" appears to have originally referred to an increase in malt to produce a higher alcohol content. However, there are many beers being sold as Double IPA which are described as extra hopped. It seems Double IPA is also called Imperial IPA. There's a brewer's association who say this, "... Imperial IPA as an IPA with color that is straw to medium amber, 6.0%-8.4% alcohol, with hop aromas and flavors that are very high, but not aggressively bitter. Among brewers the general consensus is that a double IPA is an IPA with amplified aromas, flavors, and alcohol". So that suggests there is no actual requirement to double anything!

The British army in imperial India won't have had refrigeration and it's a great light ale to drink at room temperature. Some ales can be really heavy tasting - good on a rainy evening in November, less so in summer. I'm defo going to give the 1698 a go. Less so the chocolate-banana slammer!

Did you notice, you preferred the ones in bottles rather than cans? Me too! I find canned drinks more fizzy but that could be because drinking from a can puts more of the smell right up your nose while you are sipping. I loved your review... I feel like I was there and tasted with you... we shared an experience. Finding your drink can take decades... but it is a fun journey along the way and you discover a lot of interesting things. In my older years I hardly drink at all but I think I learned to appreciate the moment... an enjoyable drink in a good place in the right circumstances... much like a great song or drama, context make a big difference. I loved your after dinner suggestion, better than a Cigar and a Brandy.

IPAs, or India Pale Ales, were slightly higher in alcohol than other beers when introduced, but more of the wort was fermented, meaning few residual sugars, and they were heavily hopped. IPAs were formulated to survive long voyages by sea better than other styles of the time of its inception in 1850s

I stopped in a "free house"(where the brewery doesn't own the pub.) in Peterborough a few years back. There was a "Real Ale" night. Beers or Ales started at 9%. The guy next to me, asked for a 1/3rd of a pint of "Roger and Out" . I watched as it was delivered from a small barrel behind the barman. Unknowingly I asked the guy why only a 1/3rd of a pint? "Just two of these and I will be legless!" I never found out its strength.

I remember a New Years Eve years ago, when unusually, my wife and I had no New Years party to go to, so we decided to have a night out and installed ourselves in a real ale pub in our city centre. We were perched on bar stools right across from the strong ales pumps. I had a pint of Roger and Out and got a particular taste for it. I stayed with the same brew for the next three pints, and having drunk four, I decided it was time for a visit to the gents. I carefully lowered myself from my bar stool to the floor and suddenly discovered that my legs had stopped working. I felt (reasonably) semi-sober otherwise, (a bit tiddly but not too bad) but my legs just wouldn't work, and just folded under me. I dragged myself to my feet, and headed for the toilets, only to find my legs wobbling again before I got there. The next time I came across 'Roger and Out' was the following summer, on a visit to a pub in Sheffield, but there the door to the Gents was right next to where I was sitting, which was itself right opposite the bar. Nevertheless, I drank it in halves and stopped well before I started feeling the effects. A lovely brew, but too risky to go all out on it!

Loved this! You have naturally good taste in beer (and yes, it's all beer; they are different styles of beer) and I love the McEwan's and 1698 too; my favourite supermarket beers. IPA is India Pale Ale. Beer used to go bad on the sea voyage between Britain and India, so they added more hops (the preservative in beer), which ruined the beer by making it utterly unbalanced and bitter, but hey! It was British beer! In India! In more recent times, barbarians who hate beer, but love bitterness have popularised drinking this stuff for fun!!! Worse, it has gotten into a macho contest to see who can have the hoppiest beer and I always vet any new beer I try for hop bragging. Any trace of that and I'm gone. I love stout, but that last one is new to me. I'm intrigued. Sainsbury's has no really good stout and while I'm not sure that's one, it does sound like an experience, so I may have to take a trip to Tesco. Looks like you had fun! :)

You sound like a sensible traditionalist. You're going to love my little story. I worked for a brewery that made some custom beers on demand for the buyers. One day our biggest customer wanted "a dark IPA". The response was something like "So you want an ale, with lots of hops?". Turned out the consumers requested this because they all were on the IPA hype, but obviously wanted something else, because the product they preferred was the least hoppy one. They just wanted to drink a dark ale, but in a bottle that said "IPA". Well, they paid for it. But it never felt right bottling that nice ale in IPA bottles. :( A barbarian who loves bitter stuff.

I got some sri lankan lion stout from a corner shop, 8.8%. I got 2 bottles a 660ml and a 330 ml and it cost £8 for the both, no idea how much each bottle was. I thought at that strength I could sip them slowly and make them last all night, I ended up quaffing the both in no time and going back out for more beer.

Shepherd Neame 1698 might taste that bit more deadly when you drink it straight from the bottle like that. It's a 'bottle conditioned' ale, meaning the secondary fermentation continues in the bottle, so there's a fair chance you'll have got a mouthful of sediment there. Bottle conditioned brews should be decanted into a glass before drinking.

Newcastle Brown Ale and Worthington White Shield. the White Shield can't be drunk from the bottle as there is sediment at the bottom. Bring it home carefully, no jolts or shaking. Probably leave it undisturbed on a shelf for a day or three. CAREFULLY decant into a tilted glass, pour the beer down the side SLOWLY. Hold at eye-level while decanting, stop when you see sediment approaching the bottle mouth. Enjoy !

IPA = India Pale Ale. The name originated in the days of the British Raj as the beer needed to be able to be transportable in unrefrigerated ships and survive the very long sea journey from the UK to the sub-continent.

IPA - Indian Pale Ale. Hops were added as a preservative, and IPAs being beer sent India were over hopped to ensure the beer remained good during the long voyage on ships. If you like hops then IPAs are good (on a hot day), if you like non-hoppy then you're looking at more grain/mash focused beers. Double Dragon from Wales is good too.

Old style IPAs, like Shepherd Neame's, are very different to the 2 that she tried here. Which are more American style, and very hoppy. Traditional English IPAs are very balanced
