Because he understands a war for the succession is about to start, during which time the king will have a massive target on his back and a crushing mountain of responsibilities. Aemond hopes to avoid all that, and then take the crown after Aegon, Rhaenyra, and Daemon are all dead. He’s plotting and scheming like a villain at such a young age, plus he’s the most badass looking character on the show.

Honestly this whole scene had me laughing at the sibling dynamics and the tragedy of these characters 😂 Aegon clearly knows he’s in for a life/death situation but is being forced into that position. Aemond knows he’s more capable of the throne than his brother but since he loves his family so he has to bring back his brother although he kinda wish Aegon was already gone. Aegon just laughing at being attacked by Aemond is hilarious cause that moment is weird since going back is facing death sentence, kinda reminds me of Daemon laughing when getting kicked by Cole and Viserys. Well God sure flips the coins on Targaryens, they’re born sadist while Aemond on the other hand is trying so hard to go light on Aegon, he’s not even trying cause if he really does then he’ll end up breaking Aegon’s jaw. One thing I'd change is Aegon's lines at the end. Make him say "Let me go and I'll take Sunfyre and fly away, never to be found". In the book one thing that's highlighted is Aegon and Sunfyre having the strongest dragon and rider bond out of all the targaryens. Unfortunately we didn't get to see much of it yet (or the younger Targaryens in general), and we've only seen one quick distant shot of Sunfyre for a few seconds. Hopefully the younglings will get more screentime and development in the next season
