Every year, life in a few of Scotland's prisons gets particularly tense as its annual prison hairdressing competition gets underway. For most of the entrants, winning first place is the ultimate goal, but for Francis, the current champion, who’s soon to be released, the competition is a glimpse at a life of freedom and responsibility. For some of his fellow entrants, the competition might be the only glimpse they get.

This is a good way to rehabilitate prisoners and prepare people for the outside world by having them learn a trade. And having a haircut is so simple but so humanising. This is a step towards what prisons should be. Class from Scotland.

@@myname8513 people make bad choices. People are in there for smoking weed for their disability when no meds we're working. People are in there for stealing when their families had nothing due to abuse. Your small mind will only get you so far in this world. Yes there are people who don't deserve freedom. However, our system ignores the people trying to rehabilitate their life. And guess what. No one helps and they re-offend because they believe there is no other way. People are forced to steal to eat after being in prison as nowhere wants to hire you.

Spent 3 months in Glenochil in early 70's for the 'Short, Sharp Shock' treatment. Run by ex army bullies and was hell to begin with. In the end I quite enjoyed the marching!

Spent almost all of 1990 and 91 in Bar, A-Hall E-Hall & finished in D-Hall as was on the bakers table in the cooks most of 91 Up at 04:30 every single morning, met some great guys and had some amazing laughs but it can be a testing place.
