On Nov. 21, 2019, crews removed the final piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct from a hillside just north of Pike Place Market. This video uses drone footage to showcase the dramatic transformation that took place as crews removed the concrete highway that carried State Route 99 through downtown Seattle.

Such a great improvement. That’s cool to see the coastal bluffs.

It's amazing to see those coastal bluffs finally free from being cast in shadow for so long. They look real nice. The waterfront looks lovely as well, like the city has finally begun to re-connected with its maritime past. It looks like more of a city now than ever before.

@@robertjohnson1609 whatever. The road was old and not up to current earthquake codes. Something needed to be done and getting that eyesore of an elevated highway out of the way is the best thing to return it to as close to possible as it naturally once was.

@@TravKidd it could have retrofitted for a fraction of the cost of the tunnel. But more importantly it was part of the soul of a once great city. It was a great view to be enjoyed by all who drove it.

Even as a Seattleite, it's super frustrating that the "before" and "after" are still completely different angles a lot of the time. At 1:00 the "before" is a full 30 or 40 yards difference from the "after" shot. Look at the placement of the small bridge over the gully! Much more difficult to keep your bearings in a space that is already massively changed :) That being said, it's crazy that this was done in a year!
@NickCBax
@NickCBax 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Beddall I also came into the comments to say the same thing. The moving shot of the waterfront wasn’t even at the same angle. @WADOT go back and reshoot the after images at the same angles. This video isn’t anywhere near as useful as it could or should be.
@NickCBax
@NickCBax 4 жыл бұрын
One additional thought on this, they should’ve had a goal to have the same building on the same sides of the frame for the comparisons. It would’ve helped us keep our bearings.

Five years later, they're still working on adding a better bike lane and greenery. Right now it just seems like they moved the traffic from an above pedestrians road to a normal one - which I'm not convinced is an upgrade.

After driving that viaduct from White Center to work at Northlake Shipyard on Lake Union every day to work with my old man from my mid teens to mid 20s I had mixed feeling about it being ripped out. This video makes me feel a lot better about how it's cleaning up the Seattle waterfront look. I still seriously hate that ridiculous wheel though.

It was ugly and in the way, but the views driving north on the upper deck were to die for. I had to relocate out of the city a few years before the project started but was back for a visit in Jan '20 - there is/was much still to do, but the change was remarkable.

That is one of the problems... Government officials were in the pockets of the developers. The citizens of the city get to pay for the building of a tunnel that is way over budget and years late. The politicians and developers make a boatload of money from the deal. Atrocious!

@@jakuub_11 I never talked about “every elevated highway”, but those blocking or cutting through central areas/waterfronts/historic districts.
