Allan Jarret That's called the topper. It's used for cutting and discarding the green tops of the cane if it's standing straight. If the cane starts laying down it's basically not used.

First, the harvester is doing quite a good job of picking up the cane that was laying down from weather. Second, it even picked up cane that was flattened on the first tractor pass (see 6:30). I am impressed. Things have changed from the 50s and the 60s when my father harvested cane. Then, we would loose half the crop because the harvester would crush the cane into the row (fail to pick up). And then we would have to wait on the weather to dry enough to burn the cane.

Yes the harvesters have come a long way. It's amazing how much technology is used in them now.

What is that banging noise coming from the elevator sounds like the elevator slats are hitting something and that cane should be flowing out. Is only spitting out like a 515 or a 102.

Im curious how do they get the fields smooth again and whst do they do with the straw being blown out the back? Is it just incorporated??
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 5 жыл бұрын
brent cousins They usually don't do anything to get rid of the rows until it's time to replant the cane which they do every 3-4years. Pretty sure they just use cultivators to get it back smooth but not entirely sure. They burn the fields shortly after harvest to get rid of the trash blown out the harvester. If not it smothers the cane still in the ground.

@@AerialAg so I guess the John deere 3510 and 3520 Sugarcane harvesters are outdated compared to the John Deere ch570 sugarcane harvester

I know JD bought Cameco out, - or rather ran them out of business with the ultimatum of sell up to us, or we will sell our 'cane-harvesters' a lot cheaper than yours (at a loss to us - ok, - but we won't worry we can stand it). So Cameco did the sensible thing and sold out to JD, - a good example of corporate muscle over the 'little specialist firm'. Do you know if JD use the old Cameco Factory or not.? Damn good video if I may say so.

Thanks ! Yes the old Cameco factory is now John Deere Thibodaux.

Why is it cut green? Do you burn the cane prior to harvest in Louisiana as well?
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 5 жыл бұрын
They cut it green because when sugarcane turns brown it usually sours. I'm not going to say never, but they very rarely burn standing cane in Louisiana.

We burn all our cane in Florida, it gets rid of the excess off the cane so the harvester can get in there and cut that 30 acre block in a matter of hours

The part that goes in the tractor is the sugarcane part? why is the top arm with knifes cutting the top of the sugarcane and drops to the left of the CH 570?
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the whole stalk of cane is pulled into the harvester and chopped into 12-14 inch pieces called billets. That's what you see going into the cane wagon. The piece in the front is called the topper which cuts and discards the green tops which is considered trash. As with any harvester the less trash entering the machine the better.

How many acres a day is it possible to harvest? With sugar cane does quality or losses mount with time as with corn or beans?
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure about the acreage. The sugar mill will give each farm a certain quota that they have to meet for that day. It usually goes by tonnage or how many truck loads they'll take. .That amount can and usually does change each day. One day they may want 20 truck loads, the next 25 and the next 18. It's always different. That's also how they figure out what to pay the farmers. It goes by tons per acre and how much sugar content is in the cane. The only thing that will mess up the sugarcane is an early hard freeze. After a very hard freeze the cane will start to sour. Other than that they cut cane every day no matter what the weather. They even cut last year in the snow which is very unusual down here in South La. Check out this other video I had posted kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ieCnqd1jv8y9gHk.html
