Film from the Film Unit/Net archives via Ron Grier. RARE mini-promo from 1973, extolling the virtues of the then new Il-62M, which had increased range over the original aircraft. A real treat for Russian airliner fans, here's a chance to see the "M" model wearing Aeroflot's short lived "Reebok" livery. Cool, funky soundtrack, too! Be sure to check my channel for the best in VINTAGE & RARE airliner videos! / classicairli. .

A truly great airliner. Back in tjhe 1980's, I had tjhe privilege of flying twice on IL-62M's. The first time on an Aeroflot 'Montreal to Moscow' flight and the second time on a Cubana Avacion Toronto to Havana flight. Actually 4 flights in total because both times, my return flights were was also on an a IL-62M. The IL-62 was an absolutely beautiful, smooth, comfortable and internally, very quiet aircraft and both times, my flights were wonderful.

Amazingly beautiful classic jet! WOW!I love how the cabin ceiling panels incorporating the enclosed lockers are a pretty blatant copy of the Boeing "widebody look" signature interiors of the early 1970s with wash-lighting, and all. I believe the subsequent interior as used by SU and other airlines was actually different when the -M entered serial production, and albeit resembling the Boeing design, it was quite a bit different..

The more I learn about this Russian aircraft, the more I like it. Unlike many comments below, I do not believe the IL-62 is a copy of the VC10, no more than a DC-8 is a copy of a 707. After all, there is only a handful of possible arrangements. That said, 54 VC10’s were built compared to 292 IL-62’s, thus the VC10 was a commercial failure. This is a shame because all Vickers Armstrong had to do was replace the four Rolls Royce Conway engines with two RB211’s to produce the very first long range, t-tail 757 back in the late Sixties! Now that would’ve been a game changer.
@Guerry-3
@Guerry-3 7 жыл бұрын
I see that there is still some politics going on with the comments. I was a career US Army Infantry officer, with the vast majority of my time spent before the wall came down. Now that I have been out for many years, thankfully all that political nonsense is someone else’s problem, and I am able to focus on beauty, wherever I can find it. Personally, the IL-62M is a mighty handsome looking piece of machinery to me. I always thought it would have been a great idea for the Russians to have kept the glassed-in navigator’s dome, despite the advance in avionics. I figured that the area could be reconfigured to make a super-first class seat for someone with say, a million flight miles on Aeroflot. Despite some similarities, I have to agree with the comments made by some folks. Each aircraft is designed for a set of purposes. It is like comparing apples and oranges to compare the IL-62 to the VC-10.

@@harrisn3693: Thank-you so much for the beer and your gracious reply. Personally, I really enjoy spending time viewing plane-spotting videos that are exclusively dedicated to commercial aircraft, regardless of the manufacturer, and I call things as I see them. Among the things I’ve learned from my personal research is the undisputed fact that the coolest looking aircraft are the ones that fly the best (JUST KIDDING!). I do think that the IL-62 is a very nice looking aircraft, and I can appreciate its design. When it comes to Americans judging aircraft built outside of the US, I think it is childish. But given the anonymity provided by “KZfaq”, mental pygmies are able to get away with comments without consequences. Nevertheless, I have seen this sort of immaturity generated from others hailing from outside the U.S. that are just as baseless. In fact, merely because I am an American, I have been personally attacked for the most trivial nonsense. It is as if I was the one who casted the deciding vote to mess over Bombardier and its “C” series and other disputed acts of the U.S. Of course I ignore them. I find no place for politics entering the arena of plane-spotting, which is among my favorite pastime activities. OK… I’m off of my little soapbox. Personally, I would like to see more competition among aircraft manufacturers in order to break up this Boeing vs. Airbus domination of the industry. I wish Illyushin and Tupelov would get cranking again and bring more options on the table for us to enjoy. I really lament the absorption of so many aircraft manufacturers in the world and miss some of the really handsome looking aircraft we used to see back in the 60’s and 70’s. After all, my greatest heartthrob is the Convair 990, which was my first jet aircraft ride. Anyway, thank-you again for your very nice reply. I did not mean for my reply to get so long, but when it comes to discussing commercial aircraft, I find myself getting really excited. I hope to read your comments in the future.

VC-10 was designed for performance on high-alt or short runways. It was specified by BOAC that later went for 707. The Il62 although looking simular had total different goals. it was low tech compared to the vc10, had four engines for it's overall performance, and was made to be a rugged airplane capable for typical Sovjet operations.

I love this aircraft. However my question is why did the Soviet aviation industry choose the light blue color for the cockpits of both military and civilian aircraft? Were they saving money or was that a standard choice?
@blago84
@blago84 5 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere (I think on some message board some years ago) that they choose this color as accordingly to their studies it is less offensive to the pilot's eyes. I think for the same reason Boeing uses light brown for their panels, and Airbus - light grey. Just what the respective manufacturer (or in the case with USSR and later Russia - the state regulations) believe is the most inoffensive color to the pilots eyes.

Cleaner airfoil profile, and political reasons. The State wouldn't allow wing-mounted engines because it wasn't considered an indigenous Soviet design. Ilyushin eventually found a loophole when they built the Il-86 but before then, It was in the wing or up in the back. Also, the Il-62 has a rear tail-wheel that helps balance the aircraft while on the ground.

I had a friend who worked at an airport who used to tell me about "dumb Commie pilots in their Ilyushins." Apparently, they would land the planes hard and flatten a couple of landing gear tires. Since they weren't standard size, new ones had to be flown in from the USSR. So the plane would be laid up in the meantime. I thought they weren't dumb Commie pilots, but smart Commie pilots. Because while they were waiting for new tires, they could hang out in a Western city for days or weeks on Aeroflot's ruble.

Yeah, what a beautiful piece of engineering... Indeed, especially crashed into pieces, killing everyone on the board, because of low production quality standards in the factory + placing all the engines next to each other is brilliant - when one explodes, it destroys also the rest of them. What a machine...

Flight controls were hydraulic/mechanical, not fly by wire. Wresting this huge airliner, the world's largest serial production airliner till the 747, required a strong pilot. IL-62s were typically given straight in approaches. Flying approaches based on published IFR approach profiles was normally deemed way too much of a workout for IL-62 pilots.

The airframe was really good looking but the aircraft itself was very faulty. It did kill many passengers and crew due to it’s poor quality ( 1972 Interflug, 1980 LOT Polish, 1987 LOT Polish and many others)

Richard F. Stripe The American aircrafts could not be an example for copying. The Russian aircrafts (both civil and militaries) simply surpasses the Americans in characteristics. So there could be no copying. The copy cannot be better than the original.

Андрей Самодуров Then why does Russia have the worst aviation safety record of any other country? Why can I name at least ten aircraft off the top of my head that look almost *exactly* like other aircraft that came out after their counterparts? Not to mention the fact that many have already been proven as copies.

The Soviets had the nerve to steal the design from Vickers VC-10 , then call the Il-62 an original design . For me it speaks volumes of these crooks .

Hi Oknelemes . Sorry for my gruff reply . I actually have a 1: 144 scale model of the II - 62 m . While i have seen way 2 many " coincidence's" between a Russian aircraft , and the Western Design Teams ,has made believe that the only thing the USSR and now Russia can do to advance their programs , is to steal other Nations reseach . I'm apologize for my position , but i believe for the most part , that i am correct . But thanks for your reply ........
