In this video we take a close-up listen to what's really happening vocally on Steven Tyler's amazing, epic smash hit, DREAM ON! Come with me and let's check this out!
Aerosmith - Dream On - Steven Tyler - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Singing Lesson
After the poor record sales from their first album, Aerosmith was in danger of being dropped by Columbia Records. However after their management convinced them to release “Dream On” as a single, they instead went on to become one of the label’s biggest acts.
What other bands can you think of that were either dropped or nearly dropped by their record label right before they broke out with commercial success? Share with me in the comments!
Steven Tyler's voice has changed a lot over the years and as we look at his isolated vocals we’ll see how he hadn’t really developed his upper mid voice yet, instead relying on his lower mid voice register and his screaming register.
We’ll explore how he used good placement to make the vocal sound high and how he added that nice distortion to his sound.
Check it out!

I am amazed at the longevity and stamina of Steven Tyler. He seems to just have an incredible love for rock music and a passion for singing it, that it just permeates through him.

And a particular love for boogie-woogie and swing grooves… The band writes everything around the core of R&B feel rhythms. Lots of triplets in there. Very few hard rock bands do that quite so much.

During the first album he wasn't confident in his voice so he made it sound different. Not to say his voice didn't need work he's definitely improve over the years. Crazy to think he wrote this song in his teens

I really enjoyed hearing this one! I'm 100% with you on the whole, "remembering this sounding bigger"! I was surprised at how much the naked vocal came across the way it does in the track! In many (if not all) the other isolated vocals videos I've seen, it usually shows a lot of subtlety that we don't otherwise hear! I also really liked your take on the fry/scream! Very cool!

This is a great analysis. I also think the very light voice support and the slightly unstable vibrato both contribute to the feeling of vulnerability that makes this vocal track really unique among all Aerosmith’s (and all other) songs… It’s the character that stands out, even with the technical imperfection. Cheers! Can’t wait for you to do a vocal analysis of something off “Frank’s wild years” or “Rain dogs…”

Per your request for feedback: Dream On is a brilliantly engineered song. Tyler’s warbly / unstable vibrato sets the tone for the song’s opening, which is of painful remembrance and wistfulness of all the things in life one cannot control (such as change, and time). Then, as his voice gains strength with “Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay” - you sense he’s gaining emotional fortitude from his camaraderie with humanity (i.e. his realization he’s not alone in feeling this way / we’re all in the same boat). By the time Tyler assertively beckons us, “Sing with me” - he’s gained strength, having reached a point of resolution with the past and acceptance of the human experience. As to the reverb (which I also recall being quite pronounced) - while one could say it enhanced Tyler’s singing, I think it’s more apt to note it enhanced the song. Reverb makes the lyrics more haunting - akin to how Tyler is haunted by the past - thus driving home the message of the song. It also creates an atmosphere of being in a big space (denoting how large the future is, and possibly the size of audience to whom Tyler’s addressing). From this accrual of strength and energy, Dream On reaches hope for the future and encourages us to fight for our dreams rather than dwelling on the past, “Dream until your dreams come true.” Had Tyler and Aerosmith NOT chosen to underscore the lyrics in the way they did, I actually doubt Dream On would have made the emotional impact it did, much less become the iconic anthem it has. Thanks for reading!

@16:18 - Yup. Totally laid back with fry. That scream is iconic for a reason. Laid back with control is good, not bad. Smothering the vocal track in even more reverb, when it already has tons of reverb on it already, is not what I'd be doing with it, but to each his own :)

I love this isolated vocals series you do and find them very interesting. The one that stands out to me was the analysis of George Michael and Elton John "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". Everything you said in there, I had to wonder if I was holding a cue card for you because you said everything I'd thought before hearing you. When it comes to Steven Tyler, I've always really loved his voice. But if I was given the choice between listening to him or you, I'd hands down easily pick you!

But yeah Ken , heres another one that was kinda dissapointing at the onset, even though I KNOW that the EQ drastically changes with ALL vocal trx when other instrument trx are mixed in, and the delay/verb YOU added is the way I remember it best as well in the 70s..He got better as the trk progress though, having more of a biting edge..You made some GREAT points as to why this was occuring and it totally makes sense...PING IS KING!

If you're not that familiar, Isaac Hayes actually did some rap that predated Walk This Way. He had two great records in the early '70s called ...To Be Continued and Black Moses with a set of 4 songs on them called Ike's Rap. You may know him for doing the Shaft soundtrack. Really provocative stuff, and his records have great soul and r&b as well.

Eric Adams from Manowar, please, Ken! He is probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest voice in Heavy Metal period. He's definitely a vocal icon up there with the best of the best. Songs like Wheels of Fire, Blood of the Kings, Defender, Black Wind Fire and Steel, Kill with Power, Bridge of Death, Heart of Steel, Hail and Kill, Thor, Mountains, Guyana, The Oath, The Power of Thy Sword, Demons Whip, Master of the Wind...Basically pick a song and let's do this. Eric will blow your mind. There are singers and then there are great singers and then there's Eric Adams. The Gods made Heavy Metal and the Gods made Eric Adams to sing said Metal better than anyone else...
