In this video we learn the intricacies that went into this master creation of vocal artistry - We are the Champions! Freddie Mercury's songwriting and singing at his peak.
Queen - Freddie Mercury - We Are The Champions - ISOLATED VOCALS
“We Are The Champions” was released as a double A-side single with “We Will Rock You” and because the two songs also flowed seamlessly, radio disc jockeys would almost always play the songs together.
Can you think of any other songs by the same artist that were actually separate but were often played or associated with each other? Share with me in the comments!
In this last video from my Queen-a-thon series we’ll explore Freddie’s use of passion and emotion accompanied by his own unique theatrics to help draw us into the storyline.
I’ll also explain the intricacy of the melodies and harmonies the band used and how they wove them in and out in the most amazing way.

Freddie probably didn't realize that this song would be played worldwide at every sporting event. That's insane, it's like he wrote an anthem for the world lol.

I always found Freddie’s unpolished vibrato was so unique to his voice. It really gave him this vulnerable yet powerful sound. Delicate and true. Sometimes uniqueness is polished away by too much proper technique. Love your work Ken and just started your course!🙌🏼

Who doesn´t like this song? It ´s for everyone. The first song which was written by Freddie for the participation of the crowd was In The Laps Of The Gods. The live version from Hammersmith Odeon in London 1976 is beautiful, Freddie is so passionate and mesmerizing here, I love it. Thanks for your Queen reactions, great job

I love this song, because Freddie was sticking it to all the doubters, the music media, and the music snobs, who just didn't get their music or couldn't put them in a box. I feel he includes us fans as Champions too, because some back then, thought we were kind of weird for being Queen fans. Love it.

I enjoy your videos of these Queen songs. I guess something that is worth considering is that Freddie wasn't vocally trained, he developed his singing style himself, and in my view, that actually is the fact that made his sound so unique (along with his natural tone/range), as I've heard numerous classically trained vocalists sing Queen songs and they may be technically perfect, but they lack the emotion, impact, or distinctiveness of Freddie's vocal. The magic is often in the imperfections.

Excellent job on breaking down the song. You know your stuff and your background backs it up. Singer, Guitarist, composer, vocal coach, producer and more? Impressive! I totally agree with you that there is no coinsidence when it comes to that "taunting" melody in here. Brian has said several times that he is confident about Queen's catalogue because every song is so worked through. They experimented a lot before landing the version they thought worked best.

In my opinion, nasality is just part of what makes his voice great. He was not a trained singer after all and truthfully I can barely detect a nasal sound. Love how Freddie’s diction is so clear both vowels and consonants of the sung word can be heard. I would happily listen to more Freddy or Steve Perry vocal tracks. Earlier for music by Freddy and, older stuff, around the time of “Sun Shines Grey”, for Steve Perry. Good review Ken.

Some interesting things I have read about Freddy from various scientific study and analysis of his voice. I dont know if you mention it in this video as I havent watched it all yet but you have mentioned before how people think some singers are tenors but actually are high baritones ( such as yourself :) ). I read the same about Freddy in an analysis some european vocologists ( i guess thats the term for those who study voice ). The analysis was pretty comprehensive given the fact that it was done after he died. They measured interviews and determined his median speaking frequency. They filmed at a very high frame rate his larynx movement. all kinds of things. The most interesting was the frequency range and speed of his vibrato. it mentioned that illustrating the mathematical sine value of what would be a perfect vibrato would be a value of 1. Luciano Pavarotti for instance has very close to that. Mercury vibrato would have a sine value of .57. Which they said meant he was vibrating his vocals in ways other sings do not. They said he was vibrating ventricular folds along with regular vocal folds to produce a subharmonic vibrato in the same way Tuvan throat singers do. Also his vibrato frequency range was over 7hz and the average classically trained singer had a 4-6hz vibrato range.

brilliant analysis Ken of what some call the relationship between theory and practice. The more authority we gain over the "language" of the music (technical authority), the more freedom we have to be creative when sharing the music. And, oh yes, too much business these days cancelling the art of music with the commodification of the music. Have you considered analyzing some of the great women jazz singers? Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Deedee Bridgewater, Carmen McRae, etc

You're absolutely right, back in the days Freddie had a lot of problems with his vocal cords due to a lack of technique. It took years before he mastered his voice.

Hi Ken.. not looking to hijack this topic, but how about isolating adam lambert? I'm super impressed by his range etc. but wonder what your thoughts may be. Too 'theatre', over pronounces? I don't know. but your take would be cool

I've saw some other comment about who you could do next after Queen-a-thon. I some suggest Steve Perry. I think that would be an excellent choice. He's another singer with a wide range of emotion in his singing. Who does sentimental better than that guy?

Ken I am sure this has happened to you. You listen to a record cassette or whatever for so long that you know exactly which song is coming next. That's what was going on in my mind during this video. On the Queens greatest Hits cassette we will rock you was before we are The champions. However at the end of we are the champions was flash. Anyways I just wanted to give you a look inside my mind and what direction it goes in sometimes. Again you were hilarious in this video. The way you talked about how this music was put together made me think of another KZfaq channel that I watch it is called 12 tone. When you talk about the orchestration and how it's like a soundtrack I think of how Queen did two soundtracks. One to flash and the other to Highlander. I did enjoy you pointing out the complexities of the chorus of this song. This song is epic and it's a personal anthem for anybody and everybody. Also you are very much right when you say that art and passion come first in music for without them there really isn't much to listen to.

Freddie is the greatest rock front man of all time. Don't try this at home boys and girls unless your whole band can sing. You'll break something....most likely your heart.

Ken back in those days didn't these bands always have a doctor at hand that would give singers the ( shot ) which helped clear up them being congested? Also Freddy also had somewhat of a speech impediment from his front teeth being severely bucked & overlapped which he always seemed to be swallowing when he gave interviews and I believe that was the real reason why Freddy near his rise was not giving interviews period . Rumor had always been that although he had money to correct this disability he never wanted to do so even quoted as saying its a part of who I am period ! You did another great job Ken great ears 😊 Blessings 🙏🏻

Kelly Higgins He didn't have a speech impediment. Where did you hear that nonsense?! He would get nodules in his throat occasionally and wouldn't do anything about them. He smoked and drank heavily as well. They toured for months on end and he never rested his voice. As for interviews, he didn't like giving them because he was shy, but on stage he was a beast! Google the best male vocalist and frontman of all time. Freddie will always come in at #1 beating out Robert Plant and Michael Jackson.
