The Group B was the most dangerous motor sport ever. The spectators put there life on the line for this!

Actually it only took group A cars about 5 years to become as fast as group B, mainly because of progress in tires. But that illlustrates something, it's that speed is only one part the puzzle. What made group B fascinating is the very light weight, the overpowered engines and their brutality, the variery of the technologies used (V6, L4, rwd, AWD, atmo, supercharger, turbo, front engine, mid engine) the impression of danger, the fact that the drivers often seem to be on the edge of disaster... I have never understood the attaction of rally cars like the celica, cosworth, imprezza. They all are so tame in comparison with the glorious group B cars. The only car that I liked watching in rallies after 86 was the group A bmw m3.

@@neros77 Indeed. I don't know if I remember correctly but once a group B driver said in an interview that you have to imagine that the people next to the road are just walls. Without this he couldn't drive so fast because he would worry about them all the time instead of focusing on the racing. The fans stood so close to the cars everytime that drivers hated it so much and thought it was insanely dangerous. Crazy times man! For the fans it was fun and full of adrenaline, yeah, but great people died sometimes and it's not good at all.

@@g4b3_28 At the time (and still now) I hated the spectators who were invading the roads. The sport was already very dangerous without that factor and it was obvious accidents were going to happen and of course it did. And the first to be blamed were the group b cars and their pilot not the stupid spectators. Maybe we would have had one more year of group b if fans had been a bit smarter. But in 1984-85 I remember there were already mixed feelings about the group b rules, like every one knew it was going insane and that the crazy and fascinating times could not last. The 1986 season was not that great sportively with lancia and peugeot bringing legal claims at each other and the deaths. But what a letdown it was in 1987... In france rally popularity took such a dive.
