Aesop also mentions the Barbary Coast on The Harbor Is Yours, off the None Shall Pass album. Which is a Daylight/Nightlight style reworking of a non-album track called Fishtales. The Harbor Is Yours is dope. About a pirate and a mermaid. Yar!

I believe this track, like so many others of his, is him storytelling (usually with some historic context) and then using that story as a cryptic/metaphoric expression of his own experiences. Aes is originally from the NYC area and eventually relocated to the west coast (SF, then Oregon). My understanding is the move was at least partially related to him getting burnt out on the hip hop scene in NYC and the west coast seemed like a fresh start for him spiritually and to kind of do his music his own way ("Go West Young Man"). However, after being in SF for a while, I think he realized that it wasn't going to go much better for him out there either, so he moved into a barn in Oregon and started putting out (in my opinion) the best music of his career.

Thanks for doing this one! 🤘 ‘Francis of Assisi in his grave alone to roller-coast’ He is the patron saint of San Francisco- rolling over in his grave at what his namesake city had become. It was so full of debauchery, and was essentially the opposite of all he stood for in his life.

"Ask Anyone" is one of Aesop's latest songs, it's about his (and other artist's) relationship with MF DOOM. I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of both Aes and MF DOOM!

The Barbary Coast in this song refers to old Hoboken, New Jersey. "Both Hudson and River Streets from Observer Highway to 4th street were historically the Barbary Coast."

Jumping Coffin to me is about fear of the unknown and the supernatural among the masses. whether you're an atheist who doesn't want to believe anything beyond what is seen, or a Christian who thinks everything that isn't Christ is a demon, it's about getting over those prejudices and being open-minded towards strange things that can't be explained. The second verse seems specifically to be a story about performing a seance.

This is one of Aesop’s best deep-cuts imo. “And hell, yawning to receive the putrid mass.” That line makes my heart crawl into my throat and stomach sink under my abdomen. But that third verse’s surprisingly sympathetic depiction of the prostitute is such a heartfelt change in the song. Puff Tuff is another easily missed masterpiece by Aes

Okay, I like the energy and the delivery is good, but if you pull up the Genius page for this song, It's pretty easy to see that he stops on all the annotated lines and basically repeats what is said there. I really liked the earlier reactions where he jumped around and tried to puzzle it out more.
