I try my best not to be an overly technical photographer at the expense of composition and more generally the creative aspect of photography. Since picking up the K-3 III, however, I sense that I am facing a serious learning curve before this beast of an APS-C DSLR will become as much of an extension of my own vision as the classic K-3 has been for so many years. Your videos help make that journey less daunting and more fun and may eventually help me refocus sooner on the creative endeavour that photography is and properly should be. Keep 'em comin', Kobie. You're easily one of the leading sources on the intricacies of the K-3 III's AF system on the Internet, and I sure appreciate that. 👍🏻

Great series . The K3 mark III gives you a lot of functionality but not enough explanation. Your videos make the difference. Thanx Kobie!

One of my favorite things about Katie is that the User Modes retain the AF settings with excruciating detail.

Hello from France. The videos you are currently making are extremely interesting. They replace what PENTAX should have done when it evolved the K3 III firmeware by evolving the AUTOFOCUS. Please continue to specify these different functions by specifying if possible in conclusion which combinations of autofocus settings are more suitable for landscape photos, portraits, animal, macro, and street photos. We get a little lost in the avalanche of possible settings without being sure to use the most effective combination depending on the type of photos we make. Thanks in advance

I have been using Pentax cameras since the late 70s. From K1000 to MeSuper, to K-M(1st digital) and now the K3iii. I appreciate your videos very much and keep them coming. As videos are locked in time, it would be appreciated if, at the beginning, the Firmware version was always mentionned. Menus may change in time with added capabilities where knowing the Firmware version would allow us to adapt to a specific video that may have been done in an older version. I do appreciate the work you do. Best regards; Gilles

Another excellent, thorough video, refreshing us on the K-3iii AF capabilities and settings. When using AF-C for sports, I find it extremely capable and the only poor images are down to my error. When photographing birds in flight, as long as the subject is kept in the AF area, there is a high percentage of keepers. When photographing small static birds, I often use SEL or ExS, which seem very effective at focussing on the bird's eye, even though subject recognition is not deployed. When taking portraits, I generally do not rely on the zones, but put the focus point on the eye. It was interesting on your AF-S video that a lens with a shallow depth of field gives better results when using zones for eye detection. This makes sense, as a greater depth of field gives the camera greater latitude to obtain focus.

@robertniblock963 I shoot sports with mine as well and I"m curious what settings you use for tracking subjects and whether you change settings depending on the sport? thanks

@@bwhite661 Typically for birds in flight I will have the AF area as Expanded AF M or AF L and strive to keep the subject within these areas, with a shutter speed usually above 1/1600s. For track and field athletics I am usually happy with AF S as it is easier to keep track of the larger subject, with shutter speed around 1/1200s or 1/1600s. For road runners 1/800s or 1/1000s is good. I have Link AE & AF point ON, action set to focus priority, AF point tracking Type 1, focus sensitivity 5. These settings are to freeze the action, with of course lower shutter speeds for more creative shots. I hope this is usefull.

Hola amigo, So that's interesting for me! First video in the morning while having some coffe, Thanks for that. Now, I'd say subject recognition works very well for me as I tend to use S small focus area. I have been shooting with almost the same parameters as you suggest this weekend the WorldSBK race here in Catalunya and also the previous WorldSBK testing and some other car races prior to that, and I found that for motorbikes if you pre-focus as I am used to do, the subject recognition point can (you need to help it pointing to the helmet) follow easily the rider. For cars what happens is that (closed cockpit cars) if finds the driver's helmet via the front window of the car, and you can end up with a full blurry car with the helmet on focus. Which is okay, but not my goal when I slow to 1/50th of a second on a car coming towards me. So I don't know if I love it. BUT it works very well indeed combined with Type 3, Mode 5. Now, I'd like to know about the catch-in ON that you have there. I have it Off for no particular reason. And also I will recheck everything you said and see if I do the same. I think I shoot the first frame as is, not requiring the camera to find it on focus, but other than that 90% I do the same. But I will re-watch you know, camera in hand and check step by step. Cheers,

I think RicohImaging said that: the Subject Recognition works while Full Auto Focus, Zone Auto Focus or Image Customization is set to auto Either of one these would enable subject recognition
@KobieMC
@KobieMC 3 ай бұрын
Right, I did remember that distinction now. If you're not in full auto AF or Zone, you must be in Custom image mode 'auto'. I tried to find where they said that, but their website locations for information are so scattered, I couldn't find it so I was going by memory. Thanks for the clarification. 👍🏼

Hi Kobie! Another excellent tutorial video. A question, do you use the back focus button in AF.C mode, or the shutter release button?
@KobieMC
@KobieMC 3 ай бұрын
I have my camera set to use both. I'm still on the fence regarding back button focus on Pentax cameras. Reason being is, I found that Pentax prioritizes AF tied to the shutter button. This is especially true for catch in focus. I've found that when using back button focus combined with catch in focus, the camera will release the shutter regardless of the subject is in focus or not. When you switch to shutter focus, it works as expected. So, what else have they tied exclusively to shutter button focus? Hence, I'm on the fence and use both.

If your shooting portraits, do you find you get better focus on faces using the screen by using face recognition setting, or by putting the auto focus on single point and just putting that point over the eye of the subject? Thanks..🙂📸

I've gotten pretty similar (great) results using either or. Same with doing portraits using subject recognition and Zone AF

@@KobieMC thanks. Had never tried the face recognition because I thought the other way would be more accurate, but now that you have told me that it’s about the same, I might give it a try. Thanks!
@KobieMC
@KobieMC 3 ай бұрын
@@johncantrell614 The only real difference is that with OVF, subject recognition on and Full auto AF or Zone, the camera can focus directly on an eye as long as one of the AF points is over an eye. In Live View with face detect, it's only finding faces. The end result would be about the same unless you're using a large aperture from F/1.4 to about F/4 where the depth of field would be thin, so an eye may be in focus but the nose isn't of you're in OVF with subject recognition and in Live view, the nose may be in focus but the eyes or ears may not be. I generally shoot portraits at 5.6 depending on the lens focal length.

@@KobieMC thanks again for the info I do shoot wide open from time to time, and was wanting to weed out the differences. Thanks for being the voice out there for the Pentax k-3 users to help get the most out of them. I currently have the original k-3 and the k-3 mark lll, but I am trying to do the learning on the mark lll before using it fully. Other brands have many people giving tutorials on that gear, so thanks for helping us Pentax users get the most out of the excellent, if a bit underrated cameras.. they can bring the goods in the hands of skilled users, so thanks for helping to get the rest of us up to speed on them! 👍📸
