Jumping into 35mm can be quite intimidating, especially from a gear stand-point. With expensive, legendary cameras out there, it can be difficult to know which one to get in the beginning. From pocket-able, tiny cameras, to more practical, everyday cameras, I compiled a list of cameras that emphasize CHEAP but still give great function and use! Let me know in the comments below if I missed any cameras that you think should have been added! Enjoy!

Thank you to the wonderful KZfaq Film Community for providing great BRoll for cameras that I sadly do not own and cannot film myself. Without my detail orientated peers, this video would have been considerably more boring. Additionally, all photos used were taken from reddit.com/analog as tagged as asked, respectively. Same thing goes for that community, without the talented photogs posting there, sample photos would have been much more difficult to come across.

These cameras are “cheap”. I have a couple of these and my full frame Sony mirrorless camera. Where just one of my lenses for just the Sony are worth 3x what all my film camera gear togethers worth.

Let's just agree that "cheap" is a subjective term. Yes when you compare your full frame sony, which is a pretty unfair comparison, these film camera seem cheap. But what about comparing a $50 Yashica Electro 35? Now suddenly the Canon AE1 doesnt seem so cheap after all.

New subscriber here 😁 (from England). Cool video so thanks for that! I have a fantastic little point and shoot camera that I bought from Facebook market place for £15. It’s a Pentax PC35 AF and I love it. It’s got an F2.8 lens and honestly, I love the results. I recently bought the auto wind on attachment too so it’s even better now. Keep up the cool content 👍🏻

I'd recommend the Pentax P30 & P50; both overlooked somewhat, bit of an 80s aesthetic as opposed to maybe the 'cooler' vintage looks you get with the Canon/Olympus SLRs like the OM10 (which is probs my favourite one), but still solid and can produce some great images!

Yashica FX-3 is easily a contender. Pair it with a Tamron Adaptall wide angle lens and you got a great full manual combo with TTL. Most of the older rangefinder cameras suck to me cause I really need aperture priority or full manual controls to shoot comfortably. And the only one with a moderately wide angle lens was the Yashica 35 CC or CCN, with a 35/1.8 lens. but that only goes to 1/250s, so you either need to use ND filters or low speed film.

My first film camera was the Olympus OM-10. And till this day, it is my favorite camera that I own. Its so efficient, lightweight but sturdy. And probably most importantly, affordable! Its such a great camera to start shooting film on. Till this day I still use it simply for its aperture priority mode. Its nice sometimes to allow the technology to take over and make the necessary adjustments to get a good exposure.

When I was researching which beginner film camera to buy I just assumed the canon Ae1 was the way to go, that's what everyone else was saying. But turns out the A1 is an even better camera lol. I was surprised to find this out because no one had ever mentioned it and was happily surprised when I look it up to buy to see it was even cheaper than any of the other more popular canon film cameras Haha

I found my Rollei 35s a bit hard to learn film photo on due to the zone focusing, which resulted in a fair few missed shots. Quickly learned not to shoot wide open. Exceptionally good results for the size, when you get it all right.

Nice video, mate. Here are my pics: -Minolta maxxum 7000 (most underated 35 slr ever. Fast autofocus, nice range of speeds, A-mount that allows you to use any Sony-A lens. Got mine for about 15 USD... and it looks 80's as fuck) -Minolta Hi-Matic 9 or 11 (both waaay better that the more pupular 7s, Yashica electro or Cononettes. Both are fully mechanical, with auto, aperture and shutter priority. Got mine for around 10 USD). -Mamiya 1000 dtl (Built as a tank, pretty simple, easy to use and really cheap. Arround 30 USD) -Konica FS (really cheap and obscure camera but quite reliable, and can take the konica Hexanon 40mm 1.8, one of the most beautiful pancake lenses ever. For arround $15 USD) -Any Taron range finder (Despite being built during the early 60's they're quite good, with nice lens, good range of shutter speeds and apertures besides a really accurate light meter... specially for an old Selenium meter. Got mine fot 17 USD with an original case) -As a bonus the Olympus Pen F (Not that cheap, but the fact that is a SLR half-frame system really saves you money when it comes to film)

I second the Minolta 7000. Not only because of the things pesky mentions but also because its one of the most 80s looking cameras out there.@@metalfingersfilm * I also suggest the Nikon EM Which might not give you full control but is easy to use and not to mention tiny. The Japanese called it Little Nikon. *The Chinon CE-4 is also a cheap model everyone ignores. I mostly have it as a back up if I don't want to take my K1000 with me *Any Praktica cameras are worth a try. Most of them are m42 so they have many rare lenses for cheap that can easily carry on to more expensive models with adapters. The ones I have is the L, the LTL, and the LTL3 first I got for free, the other two for 15 euro each. *Lastly, not reccomended - Praktica B200. I love this camera because it was one of my first, but it has a annoying Praktica B mount that is rarer to find than you think. I paid 10 euro for it and got my third Pentacon 50mm f1.8 and a autowinder. Said lens was so cheap that it broke from its mount eventually and the mirror of the body fell out at one point. Worth picking up for like a few weeks but don't make it your regular thing

Yashica is the obvious super low budget option - they are GREAT cameras and IMO easily as good as the other brands. I would choose a Yashica FX-D over a Canon AE1 - it does not have the shutter problems, the lenses are great and cheap and you can buy for $50. Or you could get 2 or 3 x for price of an AE-1.

My favorite beginner is Yashica Electro 35 GSN!!! or Lomo LCA+!!! Manual preferred babies include Pentax K1000, Canon AE1, Holga 135, Rollei 35, and Rolleiflex SL35. Yashica Electro 35 series: underrated, cheap, and easily repaired. You can find it CLA'D on Etsy by the Yashica Electro shop for under $200. Highly recommended if you want a like-new camera. However, it is a rangefinder. Sold my Nikon L35AF because it's mainly electronic. I felt it was overrated.

good list, i'm looking forward to buy an a1 asap. a good camera is yashica fx3 (especially super 2000), which is fully mechanical (exception made by that small battery for the light meter) that can shoot 1/2000. i bought the first version for ~40 bucks and i'm in love with it. graham white has a good review for it though on the opposite part of the list, i must consider mentioning the soviet cmena, which imho issa piece of junk, not like the nice kiev you've tested :D

A friend just gave my a Canon Canonet QL17 GSIII to check out and see if it's working. It's similar to the Olympus 35SP other than a 40mm f/1.7 lens and shutter priority along with full manual. I think you can find these at a lower price than the Olympus. Seems like a nice camera. Solid, easy to focus. Both have the battery issue as the light meter is designed to work with the old mercury battery. I ordered a couple Wein zinc batteries as they have worked well in my YashicaMat 124G, they just don't last that long.

The Canon AE-1 prices are high enough wondering if people are just paying for them simply because of influencers. Besides, it's not the best cheap film SLR to start and grow because of the questionable plastic internal construction, and limited FD lens selection which Canon literally abandoned.

If you’re a little experienced and into the ‘imperfect, old school’ look of film, I’d recommend a Practika or Zenit SLR with an M42 mount. There’s a ton of vintage lenses under 50 dollars with loads of character, funky bokeh, and interesting contrast. Definitely not the most reliable in terms of making consistent, predictable results however.

The 7s is big and bulky but for $5 at a junk bin camera store, why heck not. Cleaned the hazy viewfinder, adjust the rangefinder, new light seals, remove lens haze and lubricant the stiff shutter speed ring and mine is good as new.
