$5,000 per implant is definitely on the expensive side. Going to a corporate dental office like ClearChoice is typically more costly than going to a mom and pop dental office. So what's the benefit? The benefit is that there is more of a warranty associated with the service. I know of a handful of patients who received their dental implants at a local dentist. Then, 5, 10 years later, they ran into problems, and the dentist who had performed their treatment was out of business, retired, moved, etc. Thanks for sharing.

Do you ever have people that can’t have implants due to infection on the jaw? I was just watching a video and received a free smile and they could not do implants ?
@johnjazayeri
@johnjazayeri Жыл бұрын
Hi Aloha. No, having an infection does not exclude you from receiving dental implants. Oral infections always stem from your teeth. Once the infected teeth are removed, the infection will clear up and you can perform dental implants. Having a serious infection may require you to wait a few months, but it does not exclude you from receiving dental implants (if your dentist tells you otherwise get a second opinion!) There are certain medical issues that can actually disqualify you from receiving dental implants (radiation to head/neck, certain drugs, heavy smoking, etc.) but having an infection is a temporary problem that can be resolved in anticipation of placing dental implants.

I heard titanium can potentially be more toxic than zircania since it’s a heavy metal, and if in the rare cases it does seeps into our system. The question is this. If it does, God forbid, have some of the titanium metal ions seep into someone’s system, is it reversible and can be removed from our system after removing the implant?
@johnjazayeri
@johnjazayeri 2 ай бұрын
Hi Nasim. Great questions! Ok, so I'm not a chemist. As far as I remember from chemistry class, Titanium is not a dangerous heavy metal, but it is still a metal. Titanium is a favored metal when it comes to use in the body, and most other grafts, including hips and knees, are made from Titanium. Now of course, we don't use pure titanium. The Titanium alloy probably does have small amounts of heavy metals that make it somewhat toxic. Zirconia, despite it's white appearance, is also a metal. In essence, they are both relatively safe metals, although Zirconia would be the safer option if I had to choose. Cost wise, that's another story. Zironcia implants are very difficult to do, and they are very expensive. The answer to your question is no. Once you get a dental implant, it's pretty much there for the rest of your life. Removing a dental implant, one that is healed properly, is a nightmare. If there is leeching, there is no way to know, and no way to reverse it. Do your research, and if you feel you prefer Zirconia, then be ready to spend the big bucks!

Do you charge separately for extractions and grafting ? Is the implant pricing separate?
@johnjazayeri
@johnjazayeri Жыл бұрын
Hi Aloha. Yes, there is a fee involved for tooth extraction, another fee for bone grafting, and a separate fee for the dental implant. In fact, there are a few fees for the dental implant: one for the implant fixture (screw), one for the abutment, and one for the implant crown. When you get your bill you'll see 5, 6, 7 items listed on it. Those are all the steps involved in performing dental implant treatment. That is part of the reason why dental implants are so costly. There is so much to do! Performing a tooth extraction, bone grafting, and dental implant usually takes about 5 to 10 visits from start to finish over 3 to 9 months. There are many steps involved and each one has its own fees. It's best that to ask your dentist for a full breakdown of the costs upfront so that you're not surprised down the line.

Dr John, my doctor quoted $30,000 for 6 individual upper front implants including bone graft and when I went in for the procedure, he did 4 implants instead of six, due to my bone condition. So now I will be getting 4 implant supported bridge, in this case should I be charged less for implant supported bridge instead of 6 individual implant ?
@johnjazayeri
@johnjazayeri Жыл бұрын
Hi Shema. Thank you for the very interesting question, one that I have seen before and dealt with myself several times. Let me summarize your situation: You're supposed to receive 6 individual dental implants (6 implant posts, 6 abutments, 6 crowns) to replace your upper front 6 teeth. Your dentist goes in to perform the surgery and tells you "Shema, you don't have enough jawbone for 6 implant posts. I'll be placing 4 implants instead and make you a pair of 3-unit bridges". What do you do? Do you get upset? Do you request a refund? Let's go ahead and discuss these dilemmas. First off, don't feel bad at all. These things happen all the time during surgery. When you're performing dental surgery, you always want to put in as many implant posts as you possibly can. Then you open the gums and start drilling and realize that there is less jawbone than you had expected (this can happen even with a CT scan on hand). This doesn't reflect poorly on your dentist. It happens to the best of us. There is no way of knowing exactly how much bone there is, how thick the bone is, how it responds to drilling, etc. Replacing your front 6 teeth with 4 implant posts is perfectly fine. In fact, it's typically done this way. I very rarely see 6 screws replacing 6 front teeth since there is usually insufficient jawbone to do it this way. Now let's talk about the financial implications of this scenario. Should you be charged less for an implant bridge as compared to 3 separate dental implants? I would say yes. An implant bridge should cost about 10 to 20% less than individual implants. When you receive 3 dental implants you're paying for 3 implant posts (screws), 3 abutments, and 3 crowns. When you get an implant bridge you're receiving 2 implant posts, 2 abutments, and a 3-unit bridge (3 crowns essentially). Your doctor is saving a bit of money not having to place one post and one abutment. Therefore, it's fair to refund that portion of the treatment to the patient. At least that's what I would do if a patient brings it to my attention (keyword IF patient brings it to my attention ;) You mentioned that your entire treatment was $30,000. I would say that you should get about $3,000 to $6,000 discounted from your treatment. After all, your doctor is saving about $1,000 to 2,000 on the implant parts, so why not transfer some of that savings to you? Now, some dentists may argue that they can't refund you for blah blah blah reasons. Others would accommodate your request for a small refund. That is between you and your dentist. I hope my explanation helps you understand what is fair so that you and your dentist can reach a mutual agreement. Best of luck with your treatment and be sure to let us know how it goes!

Can you do other dental work when doing implants to save patients time too?
@johnjazayeri
@johnjazayeri Жыл бұрын
Hi Aloha. LOL, I suppose you can do a whole bunch of stuff together to save time. It depends on your dentist really. Many times you're referred to a specialist, like an oral surgeon, endodontist, or periodontist for specialty dental work. Dental specialists may do other surgical procedures that go along with dental implants. These include tooth extraction, bone grafting, gum surgeries, bone recontouring, etc. It's typical that we do all these things at the same time. So I may pull two teeth, smooth out the jawbone, graft the area, and place a few dental implants, all in one setting. Other times I do fillings, crown preps, and a few root canals in one setting. I generally don't like to combine surgical (extractions, implants) and non-surgical treatments (fillings, crowns, root canals) together. Too much bleeding, and it gets too messy! The only exception is when I put scary cat patients to sleep. In that case, I do all the hard/painful work in one setting. I always start the appointment by doing the fillings, crowns, etc. which don't cause much bleeding, and then work my way to surgical stuff like extractions and dental implants.

What is an average warranty on implants
@johnjazayeri
@johnjazayeri Жыл бұрын
Hi Aloha. Great question. In California where I work, dental work has a mandatory warranty of just one year. I know, it's pathetic, one year is nothing! However, 99% of issues with dental implant typically arise within the first year. This means that if your dental implant is solid and working well for one year, there is very small chance that it becomes loose, infected, etc. after that time period. That's pretty good. If you compare this to root canals, which have like a 10% chance of getting re-infected and failing in 10 years, you'll see why so many people prefer dental implants to other dental treatments. Now I know there are plenty of dentists who promise a 5 year, 10 year, sometimes a life-time warranty on their dental implants, but take that with a grain of salt. First off, once your dentist retires, moves, dies, the warranty is up (this isn't Costco or Amazon you know!) Secondly, the dentist can always find a reason not to honor the warranty: You had another tooth removed which caused my implant to loosen, you didn't maintain proper hygiene since you missed a cleaning 4 years ago, it was a mechanical issue and it's not my fault, etc. etc. Instead of worrying about warranty, find a great dentist with experience who has a good reputation in your neighborhood. Don't look for the cheapest deal, as that usually translates to cutting corners, using cheaper implants, etc. which leads to more problems down the line.

Hi Jace. I do not know of any dentists in that neighborhood personally. I can tell you a bit about Clear Choice. They are a national chain, part of 1,000+ dental groups. They are expensive, but they do give you a reliable product. They use high quality dental implants as well as high quality restorative material. They only hire prosthodontists, who have additional training of 3 years beyond dental school. Expect to pay close to six-digits for full mouth implant treatment. You can look for local dentists who do it for a bit cheaper. Be sure to verify the implant brand and restorative material. Dental schools are fine, they are probably the least expensive option. However, treatment usually takes years, sometimes 3, 4, or 5+ years. Good luck with your treatment and I hope you find an exceptional dentist to handle your case.

I am older and I need to get some health issues like my high blood pressure attended to before I do this. It is even more expensive then I thought it could be. I couldn't find any price higher on line than 90,000 bucks and before doing the scan, the prosthodontist thought it might be 70,000 bucks . But after the scan it's a little over 100 thousand bucks for full mouth 8 upper implants and 6 lower implants that don't need to be removed at night. So when you said near 6 figures, that was close. It might take 2 years to complete.

Lol, I agree. You shouldn’t look for the “cheapest” deal. I always get three quotes and usually go with the middle one. Going too cheap means cheap implant brand, cheap crown, cheap bone graft, etc. In California, you have one year only to file a complaint. So if your implant fails after one year, your kind of in a pickle. Don’t go too cheap guys!
