Short Afghan Hound description:
The most distinctive feature of the Afghan Hound is definitely its coat, which gives them the elegant look. But it serves a purpose, they were bred in mountainous harsh region and the coat keep them warm. You can find them in many colors, most commonly in black, black-and-tan, red, cream, blue, brindle, domino or white.
Afghan Hound is a smart dog, but the training is very challenging. It is because of their independent nature, which helps to be so good at hunting. But it also cause, that they are hard to obey and listen to your commands. Because of that, this is not the best choice for novice dog owners, because they really need very patient and consistent leader. This is also pretty sensitive dog that does not like rough handling.

Love my Afghan Hound. The bond that one can have with this breed is unmatchable. They are extremely smart and independent thinkers. They love their person and family. I find that my girl has been easy to train and, you are correct, there is no need to yell at this dog. They respond to firm, kind and consistent correction. They pay attention to everything and they know when something has changed and must investigate. No one should own one without doing their research and really want an animal that develops a relationship with you that must be nurtured and cherished. They give back so much and truly climb into your heart.

Agreed. I can’t believe their personality and the way they bond with you. They let you know you’re the most important thing in the world. I have an 8 month old and she is my world. What a personality

Afghans are definitely my favorite breed! They are the best! And their beauty just takes your breath away. For those who would like an Afghan but who are concerned about the maintenance of their coat, by all means, have your Afghan professionally groomed. It is so worth it! Although I love all dogs, I have no desire to get any other breed 💕

My Afghan hound was so easy to house train. In less than 3 weeks at the age of 4 months he was 100% house broken. He doesn't get into things at all. We give him Just Right dog food. He has a full-time trainer that works with him daily. He is a smart thinker and solves problems easily. He is gentle to my Down syndrome adult son. He is gentle around small animals and children. He's mindful of his surroundings and acts appropriately when in public. He's eager to please our family. He loves stretching out on our couch. When he wants to eat or use the bathroom he sits at our back door or at his food bowl when wanting food. He's patent when he's being trained. He looks up to us when he's on a long walk.

My family had a "HalfGhan", half Afghan and half Golden Retriever. He looked like an Afghan in coat, face and size but a Golden in body shape, round body, not sleek. He was a runner and very fast. Very sweet and good natured dog, he love the cats. He was a "foundling" he came to my parents home during a very bad couple of days of thunderstorms and decided he had found his new home. The vet said he was about 3 years of age and he lived for 14 years with my parents. Good breed and GOOD VIDEO. I think a house full of Rough Collies and Afghans would be heaven.

That sounds like an interesting mix. What was his temperament? Because those two breeds (Afghan and Golden) are very different from each other. One is highly independent, the second is extremely eager to please their owners. I think that Afghan Hound dog with Golden Retriever temperament would be one of the best dog breeds.

@@Rocadog His name was Romeo because he was roaming in the neighborhood. He was gentle with the cats and other dog Julio, also a foundling that came to the house. Julio was the Cairn Terrier. Romeo the HalfGhan was very sweet natured, loved to sleep with the cats (3) and Julio. I would say he had a lot of the personality traits of Goldens including the rounded stomach and chest of the Goldens. But the height, face, long legs and length and hair of the Afghans. He was somewhat independent because he did not listen when called. He would just look at us. If he did not want to move by us he would just stay where he was, either on the couch, bed or floor. My parents had a large fenced-in yard that he could run and play in with Julio, but he could open the gate and escape (with Julio)and run to the downtown area. My parents would chase after them but never catch either dog. They would come home after an hour or so checking out the park and stores. After the 2nd escape they locked the fence. He was SPOILED like all of our pets were and still are. My family loved him so much because he always made us happy.

I had a male afghan and he was the epitome of grace, and hilarity. When I had him I was in good shape from our long daily walks, during which he always politely walked by my side. Never had a dog like him before and I hope to be getting another in the coming year.

Fantastic dogs, you really have to own these dogs to fully understand them. I have heard many times that these dogs are stupid. Haha. That’s what Afghan hounds want you to think. Great loyal dogs, good watchdogs, and they really only bark when something is wrong,They are also funny, and always up to something. These dogs seem to keep you young if you know what I mean.I have owned these dogs for 36 years, we have owned nine in total ( 7 dogs and 2 bitches) we have three dogs at the moment. True pleasure to have these dogs part of our family .

High exercise needs, high prey drive, very high independance, high grooming needs... Very few people are suitable to have this dog breed; if you want this breed, you should seriously think about it and do extensive research.

True, they are definitely not for everyone. They are often times descibed as "dumb" but they are just extremely independent to listen to our commands :D

I am pretty sure it is because of their independence / stuborness. It is true that they are not the easiest breed to train (if we are talking about the classic obedience training). But that does not make them dumb.
