My dingo is my best friend, coworker, counselor, protector... he is 13 years old and ... Im tearing up with just the thought of him passing. I've had Little Buddy( Buddy/Gilligan) since he was about 4-6 months old. He was clearly a different kind of K9. he is super smart, loyal, and protective, but he is so social and loving too. he goes everywhere with me, all day everyday, and anywhere we go he always draws a small crowd. he scares people sometimes because he looks kinda threatening, but he also loves to greet people all the time and his intense eye contact and clear direct intention to go to someone, sometimes looks like aggression, but when he goes up to that person and his tail gets wagging and he leans up for kisses people just melt. His eyes are beautiful and have a deep connection to his "spirit". he communicates very clearly with his body language and eye contact. He is very protective of women and children, he didnt even like me play wrestling with my wife and kids. he would give me warnings and pinch me in the butt, and if I was standing he sometime went for the groin. I could go on for days rambling about Buddy, but the point is He is the best! Dogs are amazingly loving creatures, and Dingos are a solid breed.

Absolute best breed of dog you can own imo. My family had one from the time I was 12 to 28. He was so smart and easy going. My dad could tell him to go get his shoes for a walk, and he would go get each matching shoe, one at a time, out of a closet full of shoes. We lost a part of our family when he finally passed away.

But the newest movie just dropped on Hulu/Disney+ and one of the main characters is a Carolina Dog (not a movie trained dog, a shelter dog that actually was trained just for the movie and she does an amazing job and steals the show!) If youre into the Predator franchise you will love this smart doggo play her role in it!

Thank you, Rocadog, for this video. When we adopted our Nellie from a local animal rescue group, we were told she was a basenji-lab mix. Now we know -- without a shred of doubt -- that she was a Carolina Dog. She was incredibly loyal and sweet. Sadly, she passed away suddenly from an embolism on August 20, 2020. She took a huge chunk of my heart with her.

I have a Carolina dog and he's a pound rescue. I can honestly say everything he said about the breed is correct. My dog is the smartest dog I've ever owned/seen. That makes him a bit stubborn and he's definitely needed serious training. He is absolutely a pack animal and he misses his people when they aren't around. He is very affectionate, *loves* to play with other dogs and he's very resilient. The shedding can be a little much, and stress/diet can make them shed more. He also has an iron stomach and could probably survive off garbage. Cheese and dairy in general is his favorite. He's so high energy and white vocal, but less so than huskies. He also farts so freaking loud and his snores are beyond loud. He snores louder than most people. He's an amazing guard dog and even when heavily sleeping, his ears (I call them satellites) are always perked up and listening for even the slightest out of the ordinary sound. I wish he were intact so I could keep his lineage going. He really is a truly wonderful animal. He's work certainly, but there is no price I wouldn't pay for him. I'd literally take a bullet for him if I had to. He's not a breed but everyone, but he's beyond special, more so than almost any dog I've ever known. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Just adopted a 1 yo last week. He was a rescue that was set to be eauthanized. I had no idea what his breed was, but the rescue place said he was a Carolina. He is literally the BEST dog. Granted, I've only known him a week. Every single thing you described in this video is true. He is just so wonderful and sweet and lovable, a tad bit stubborn at times, a little difficult to train the basics, and very protective of my daughter (which will eventually be great when he's not protecting her from me and her dad!). I feel really lucky to have him. He also rarely barks!

I believe I had a Carolina dog. I was told she was a pit lab but she didn’t look anything like a lab pit at any stage of her life. She was a tank of strength. I would love to share photos of her. Unfortunately she had to be put down a few days ago. She had a seizure disorder and was only put down when she had no chance of coming back to normal. She was the best dog ever. I owned one. The sweetest dog I ever had - more biddable than my GSD. When I got him, I thought he was a mutt, your usual mixed breed pound dog, nothing special. After the mascara around jus eyes and the way carried his tail when walking, I realised I had a very rare dog. He became one of my favorite breeds after a GSD. I will never be able to retrieve the dog I was forced to give him up because I wasn’t allowed to keep him where I once lived and I will never forgive those who forced me to relinquish him against my will and I will never forget him. Super loving dog, kissy kissy mobbing similar to a lower status wolf. Very intelligent, learns thing super quickly...if treats are involved. An all around excellent companion. She needs to run and exercise...3-5 miles a day plus chilling in my truck when I do errands. Total velcro dog, I am fortunate that I work remotely so she has company all the time. My family owns a Carolina dog. At first I was a bit disappointed as I thought they'd grow to be bigger. He's put on some weight but has stayed the same height since he was about 8 months old. Ours is pretty affectionate. He's very loyal and will take multiple naps, rarely leaving my side for independence. They are total pack dogs and is usually happiest when the whole family is around. He loves playing with other dogs. At the dog park, he's really quick and wears out much larger dogs. He wants nothing to do with dogs his size or smaller BTW.

I miss my Ripley who was with me for 15.5 years. She was a rescue from a Georgia county pound. For most of her life no one had any idea of her breed and assumed she was a curious mix. Even a DNA test was all over the place and inconclusive. After years of odd but delightful traits and behaviors I finally discovered she was a Carolina Dog, not a weirdly mixed mutt but arguably one of the purest breeds out there. She and I clicked the moment we saw each other in the pound and the incredible bond lasted until the end. It has been a couple years since her passing yet I still find ways in which she enriched my life and changed me for the better. I will be of her forever.

My CD is exactly as you describe! He was easy to train recall... Sometimes he's reluctant, but on when coyotes come around, but he still stops at the fence. We basically take him everywhere, but on days we absolutely have to leave him, he protests. He will find something from the house & places it in the same place on the yard. He doesn't shred it. He never even pierces the wrapper. Our solution is to place "sacrificial items" so he can safely throw his fit. 😂 Best dog I've ever had though! ❤

Great health, big time undercoat which does shed-a lot, She will be 14 in July, sleeping more, but still loves her long walks and plays like a puppy with friends at the dog park. Great job bringing up the Ivermectin sensitivity, which is caused by the MDR1 mutation! Our boy suffered a massive seizure last spring, and an MRI revealed that it was due to a stroke. The medical team, including the neurologist, said that seizures caused by toxicity usually occur within 24-48 hours of ingestion, but upon further research I'm now wondering if the heartworm meds a week beforehand could have caused an issue that developed into a stroke?! I wasn't aware of the sensitivity until I studied it further after the stroke (I'm pre-veterinary medicine). It took our boy an entire month of ICU care as he forced himself to walk again while receiving therapy from all of us, and his recovery is nothing short of a miracle, with the hospital even awarding him a Purple Heart (which the pharmacist said she's never seen in her entire four years there, and they consider him to now be a hospital icon).

I had to put my yellow lab down just shy of 14yrs old, it absolutely destroyed me. 4 days later my mom found this odd looking dog listed as a corgi Shepard mix. She went to check her out, and brought her home. Within 4 days we became best friends. Sucks because I travel for work and a Carolina dog wouldn't do as good with my work situation as most other dogs, she's back home with my mom and they're connected at the hip now. She says she loved the lab and she's still torn about it but this animal rescue weirdo we scooped up was one of the best choices she's ever made in her life. And in all honesty I'm probably gonna always have a Carolina dog in the family, even if I have a couple other breeds as well

I just adopted one from a shelter, as she has been passed around different families all her life. She is 4 years old, about 60lbs, might be mixed, and she is absolutely protective of me. I can see why people have given up on her because she can get aggressive around strangers, especially men and other dogs her size or bigger. I try to use as much positive reinforcement; a lot of petting and affection when she does something well, and redirect her path or attention to me when she wants to lurch out at people. I also have her on a prong collar, and a spray bottle with water for punishment, and IMMEDIATELY try to give her easy commands, like “sit,” to focus her attention back on me so that she can earn a reward for positive behavior. I will not want to bring her back to the shelter, ever. I just want to give her a chance, as she so deserves a great life!! We are getting better when around strangers, and live in an apartment (a little harder to socialize), but hopefully I can teach her over time not to be so high-alert around strangers.

You are great for giving her a chance for a good life! I wish you a lot of patience with redirecting her behaviour. Nice video. Glad to have found it. I caught a wild pup last year from a pack of dogs where I worked. I researched it because of the unusual act of snout pitting the dog was doing in my yard, and the way him and the pack looked, like little jackals running from me. I know the mom had two litters because there were young pups and older pups. The factory I worked at called animal control and caught a few pups with traps. I tried to take the pups, 5 or 6 months old, but since covid and all that getting to the pound was out of the question. They only caught 4 of the 12 pups and dogs. The one I caught I love to death, beautiful ginger 18 inches tall and 45 pounds. I did put the story and video of the dog on my channel a couple of times. After 18 months now he will go into the front yard and in the car for a drive but doesnt like leaving the house. He shivers because he gets so scared and I have to hug him a lot to ressure him. But in the house and yard it would be hard to find a happier dog! (And couple) He plays all the time with are other rescues, and gets all the care and love he wants. Just gotta LOVE the Carolina Dog!

This is a most accurate description of the Carolina Dog. I have three now (once had as many and nine) and they are the most enjoyable companions I have had. But you have to expect a self-reliant animal, because they are just that. With training, earning the dog's respect is central, and to accomplish this you will have to treat him or her with the same respect you desire. I would say learning to cooperate with the species may be a more accurate term than teaching them to be obedient. Combining clear voice requests (not so much "commands") with consistent hand and arm signals has worked best for me. Of course, the use of treats during training is a must. But once you get this down, going out with a pack of these magnificent animals--through woods and fields--may take you back in time and leave you with the desire to get down on all fours and run wildly with them.

I am an old woman that just took in a Carolina Dog from a kill shelter. She was so freakin beautiful and looked straight into my eyes without a blink, I was smitten, even though I absolutely did not want another dog at my age! They think she is 1 to 1 1/2 years old. I thought she was as easy as pie to train (soooo smart) UNTIL she quite obviously did not "want to" obey. I'm a little mystified as I am not sure how to handle this just yet! She is obedient to a fault all day long and suddenly she smells excitement (grandkids come over) and she will NOT listen to me at all!!! Do you have a suggestion regarding how I can run her? I can not take her to the dog beach or dog park until she absolutely obeys (I've trained her to recall with a whistle and as long as I have some really yummy cheese when she comes, she high-tales it to me!!). I can not run her myself (my granddaughter will when she visits). I love all the comments on this thread. It makes me excited to have a CD, even though I am kinda worried I won't be able to give her everything she truly needs, except lots and lots and lots of love, treats and toys!! she came crate trained which has been a blessing. Funny, she will complain when I put her in the crate at night but if I go in there and talk with a soothing voice and pet her head and neck, she will calm right down I don't mind if she isn't crated every night however, she has to obey a bit better than she does to give her free range in the house at night. She is so beautiful. People think she has German Shephard in her because of her color markings (but not her shape, especiallly her head) and she scanned with a lot of Siberian Husky in her. I've studied all three and she looks and acts like a CD all the way, to me. Her ears a floppy and ery pink inside. she has a pinkish spot on her nose. Her eyes are yellowish and her eye lashes are pure white.

I have a Carolina Dog now and I love her so much. She’s immensely stubborn though. She’s not overly affectionate like our pit/lab mix, but she’s incredibly sweet. She likes to start things she can’t finish sometimes though and has a few battle scars to show how she lost the fight that she starts though. Got mine on Craigslist, she was listed as a cattle dog. She follows me everywhere I go and gets so excited when I get home.

What I love about Carolinas is that they are a very well balanced dog. In many cases seen to be more agile than border collies and faster than much larger dog breeds. My girl at 8yrs old an overweight she can still catch a rabbit when she gets loose. She will not recall until AFTER we have walked around for a while. She very passive except for one door to door salseman whom she didn't like. She was bristled, barking and growling. When I asked the dude to leave and he stepped towards me I cracked my front door a little and my girl wanted out and at him. He left. When anyone is sick she lays right next to them and will not leave them. I have used her with other more hyper dogs to help teach them how to chill out. What is not to love about her as everything I ever thought a dog should be she is!

We recently adopted a Carolina dog/gsd mix... thinking she was just gsd. But, certain traits made us wonder. I even joked on day 1 that she was a dingo. Little did I know, I was right on target lol. She talks when she plays & often gives love bites (basically just lightly nibbling my hand or holding my hand in her mouth)... we love our Denali for her unique characteristics & her always sweet temperament & overly excited butt wiggles when she is happy. She took instantly to our malinois girl & they are just besties from day 1. I'd recommend a Carolina dog anyday. 🥰

I took him in because I’ve never seen a dog like him, he was gentle too. I never knew what he was. Vets been telling me he’s a husky/Shepard or lab/Shepard. But this morning I took him walking and a stranger pointed out that he looked like an Australian Dingo. A very good technique for training this dog is to watch it as a pup, and when you are in tune with the dog and can anticipate its very next move and give the action a name and then reward the dog with play or praise or treats or any positive reinforcement method. I use them each at any given time, the dog never becomes expectant of any given thing but is always pleased that you are pleased, and will be very cooperative. This training method, as far as I know, is called "capturing behaviors". It works it's the best thing I've ever found to supplement any other obedience training you have your heart set on every using in the future. It usually nips any stubbornness known to a particular breed in the bud before it ever begins to blossom into full grown obstinate nature or behaviour. Also you must become very aware and disciplined in not giving your dog attention when it is doing something that it should not receive attention for because it will take it as praise and reinforcement of that bad behavior and do it very often thinking it is okay and you approve.

I wish people would stop calling these dogs American Dingoes. They are not related to dingoes - they are truly native pariah dogs and were hunting companions to many of the Native Peoples in what is now the Southern US for several thousand years.
@TamarWise
@TamarWise 2 жыл бұрын
But they are related to dingos... They came across the Bering strait with people and then separated and became independent again and then native people's started domesticating them yet again. They are a land race so are related to other land races if you follow the evolutionary tree back far enough. I agree they are pariah dogs. American dingo is more of a nickname ✌🏼

I own a Carolina dog, and I wouldn't say they're feral. Feral means it's in a wild state after escape from captivity or domestication, almost exclusively to a species non native to an area. I use the term "wild” almost exclusively to refer to a native species living in a wild state, such as the Carolina dog :) they are wonderful dogs to own, super loyal. If you're thinking of getting one, be sure to keep them mentally stimulated and don't be a single dog family with one. They need to have a pack.

I was hiking in the grand canyon when I found a couple who had a dog that looked like my Carl. They said, "you know this is an actual breed right? Not just a mysterious mix. He's an American dingo!" I couldn't believe it. Everything their dingo does was so spot on. His hair stands up along his spine when he senses danger, he does strange things with his food, he has the blue spotted tongue... they listed four or five other things that were spot on. I'm still shocked at this discovery.
